Wow. Doesn’t time fly Over a year since last post and a lot has happened. Have been spending a bit of time with our eldest son and his gokart. In May last year pit crewed at Hampton Downs race way. Xmas we drove 1000k to a his place and worked on the kart . There was some fibreglass work to do on the new nose cone he uses for road racing. I bought it home with me after we did the glass work and I am now doing the painting on it

The new kits come with 1/64" plywood die-cut for sheeting the cockpit. My older kit provides some rather thick balsa for this task. I like the the plywood idea and feel fortunate to have a relatively large sheet of 1/64" handy.

Next up, the forward cockpit.

My last post was about an ultra micro plane and a problem with a fried motor. A new motor was mounted and working normally. Less than a minute after the plane was back in the air, it suddenly wanted to gain altitude. For a moment, I thought that something was wrong with the elevons. But then I realized the throttle stick had no effect. The plane must have been flying close to full speed by the time I turned off the TX. After a few seconds the plane dived. On the ground, the motor spun slowly until the battery was disconnected. The smell of burnt circuits lingered, The plane survived with minimal damage but the board can't be removed without breaking the plane apart. So, that ends that.

The link below is to some initial footage with all parameters set to "Auto", in both Sunny and cloudy Outdoor daylight conditions.

The only real change was setting the Frame Rate to 60 FPS during the cloudy day to bump the Shutter speed up just a notch as the first footage seemed considerably darker and softer (somehow)...

Although this cam is a couple years old now and being cleared out at bargain prices ($60 CAD, Tax Shipping net, net) to me it is a tremendous value.

So far it, easily matches and in some respects exceeds the quality of my trusty Turnigy Eclipse 2K.

Tutorial - Volantex Ranger G2 - Fix that bad Thrust Angle

Well, this planes stock thrust angle is absolutely terrible.
It is so bad, in fact, that on my Maiden Launch the plane nosed in hard as though I had full down Elevator on the Plane.
I setup Flaperons and with Full Flaps and Full Up-Trim on the Elevator I was able to mitigate this bad Thrust angle but is that the best solution?
Now, I'm going to Modify the stock Thrust Angle to get it where it should have been from the start.

The Hubsan H501S has certainly been out for a while now and is still my main camera bird.Yeah it would be nice to get something new at some point but this one still does well for me.

Review Part 3 - RacerStar BR2208 1400kv Motor Thrust Test with Gemfan APC Style 8x4 Prop

This is a very inexpensive motor and I purchased it for $4.99 US
The Manufacturer's Stated Thrust Data is higher than what my Motor was able to provide with an 8x4 ABS Prop with a 3S LIPO.
That Prop may have been too flexible to provide the Thrust in the Manufacturer's Specs.
I had a comment on my initial Review & Thrust Test of this Motor and was told that the Motor performed better with a 9x5 Prop.
I purchased a couple of 9x5 Props to conduct this Thrust Test again and it did indeed provided much more Thrust.
Now, I have also purchased a Gemfan APC Style 8x4 Prop for testing ;-)
Let's see how it performs with this Prop and then I will state my conclusions again.

I finally got the bearings out my FA-72A "#2" (i sold the first one)

Usually... i use blocks of wood to set case upon. Then a ratchet extension and rubber mallet to knock bearings out (after applying heat and oil)

Well, the rubber mallet was not enough. Lots of heat and oil, but the front bearing was stuck!
So I switched to a small hammer instead of rubber mallet, to strike the ratchet extension. I was careful too, no need to crack the aluminum case with excessive hammer blows... and it worked! Easy peazy

I finally cleaned my FA-72A '#2'
tonight


The FA-72A has a new metal back plate, pretty sure i have proper metal screws to mount the carb...
Only thing missing is set of bearings and a the 'A' version cam case gasket. The gasket set i ordered is for the 'B' (i can make a gasket)

The cherry, Saito's gasket set came with new head-intake O-ring!
This is great, will likely eliminate any head-intake leaks i was having. The intake leaks were due to excessive vibration caused by (the original) plastic backplate, methinks.

I have a nice brass pipe, that Gary Cee made me, to test on video. So i am eager to get this engine going. I have run this FA-72 with his pipe before it lost compression--and it sounded great!

Balsa Plane:
I own a GP Easy Sport 40 ARF (MKI) model airplane. It is my entry into balsa/ glow flying. I have decided to go with my FA-56 or FA-72. Either would fly it well

A quick recap !

Fasttech.com sent me a 50mm EDF for review testing ..
To really test it , it should go into a plane ..
The plane is the Prime Jet pro from HobbyKing , and be one of those foam board cut out's ...
It took a long time for the EDF to get here , so the model did nothing for a while ..

Obviously for a EDF to replace a pusher prop , a little tweaking is required ..
Fuselage was shortened , and a cut out made for the EDF ..
Vertical stabilisers were moved inboard to stiffen the area around the EDF ..

Since then ...
The larger carbon spar was installed , epoxied each end .
When the epoxy dried I ran a bead of white glue along the spar for contact with the wing ( more stiffness )
Also I added some runners underneath to which I attached a skid plate for the EDF .. ( Keep it out of the dirt )
Also I used some budget 9g servos I got (?) a long time ago for projects ( Just like this ) ..

Needs doing ...
Solder the connecting pins to a 4ch Rx ( FS2A )
Bind the Rx and locate the 2s battery ...

Ooooh yeah !
After installing the EDF , I gave it a run on the intended 2s battery
Looks like 2s will power this project just fine ...

That elusive G Spot !
Where Oh where will the Centre Of Gravity go ?
