XK A800 & WL F959 (11 min 0 sec)

Havent flown these in a very long time ..

XK A800 was flown yesterday and the F959 was flown this morning .
When I left home this morning there was a slight breeze ...
Nothing to worry about right ?
By the time I got to the park , it was a wind turning into a Northerly Gale ...
Oh well ! The F959 actually handled that wind reasonably well .. ( Could have gone without the wind ) .

For review I have the Xtar BC8 AA / AAA NIMH & for their proprietary AA / AAA Li-ion battery technology .
This charger is not a Li-ion charger and you should not attempt to use it as such !
It is designed to recharge NIMH batteries and Xtars own Li-ion AA batteries .
If you keep reading you will see why it could be dangerous to try and use this charger incorrectly !
This charger does not currently show on the Xtar website .

Using the BC8

Honestly , it's as simple as plugging in the BC8 into a suitable USB power supply capable of at least 5v 2A . To charge NIMH batteries simply pop them into the charger and pull them out when the charger gives a green light ( fully charged ) . The red light signifies the battery is being charged . And this charger is a constant 0.5A charger , so charging is neither fast nor slow . In fact the charger is nice and easy on the batteries and I did not detect any over heating on the AA or AAA I charged . AA stayed in the 30 deg C range and I did see 42C on a few AA , ( Room temp was 20 deg C ) .
A unique feature of the BC8 is the hole in the back of the charger . I believe this is to aid in the extraction of batteries that have completed their charge cycle . It can be a real pain peeling the odd battery out of a charger once it has finished charging and the hole in the back allows you to simply push out the completed battery with little effort .

Charging AA / AAA Li-ion ( From Xtar )
Just as easy as charging NIMH...Continue Reading

FMS800 Vtail 2nd flight (6 min 55 sec)

2nd flight of the RTF FMS 800 Vtail Only it's no longer RTF - It's plug and play !
And by that I mean :

Radiomaster R84 Receiver ( FrSky D8 )

After my first traumatizing Mode 1 flight , I came home and began shopping for a new Rx for the Vtail so I could use a Mode 2 Tx ...
After a little while , the grey matter began to churn . ANd I remembered that I should check my little box of goodies !

Yeah , there it was .. R84 receiver .. A nice small 4ch receiver I purchased quite some time ago and never got around to trying ..
So into the Vtail goes the R84 .

FMS 800 Vtail 2nd Flight ..

Removing the factory Rx and replacing it with the R84 did result in a slight CG shift and I needed to apply some down elevator trim to level out the flight .
Also for some reason the Vtail was rolling left on me .. ( I will have to make some analogue trim changes later ) .
With the plane trimmed out ...

A) Cutting power resulted in an immediate nose drop , indicating a forward C of G .
B) Even with a forward CG and 50% Expo ( 100% rates ) I barely needed any stick movement to turn the Vtail ( it is crazy sensitive to control input )
C) Mode 2 , I really like mode 2 ....
D) Again , I tried to keep the throttle to 50% for the flight
E) R84 Rx , is supposedly a long range Rx , so no signal issues .

The factory Tx was not horrible , but it was mode 1 ... ( That makes it horrible ) .
On...Continue Reading

RTF FMS 800 Vtail (10 min 42 sec)

Yeah , got me another FMS 800 Vtail = Why ?
Because :
A) I could
B) I did initially want the RTF version , not the Plug an play version ( Which I had to settle for )

Mode 1 = I hate mode 1 ... My brain is hard wired mode 2 .. ( Instinctively easy )
I tried RC a long time ago , and found it a PITA ... ( Cos off Mode 1 ) Oz was heavy into mode 1 for some reason .

Came along Mode 2 ( into my life ) and suddenly RC made sense ... ( Much easier than mode 1 - for me )

Anyways , if you watch the video , just be prepared for me saying how much I hate mode 1 .

FMS 800 Vtail
So came with everything including a 350mAh 2s battery .
Flight time is excellent , and when I got home the resting battery voltage was 3.85 ish ...
TX , I hate mode 1 ... Other than that , it's not horrible .. Trim tabs are ? Rubbish .. But they work .. Problem is they are sliders .. So even if the Tx is off you can bump them ( move them ) and stuff up your trims .
What is the protocol ??? Would be nice to bind it to a better Tx and not need to swap out the Rx ..

C of G
Instructions say 35mm from the leading edge ...
With the factory Tx , many say the Vtail is unflyable ..
My CG was 28mm from the LE and it was plenty sensitive and could turn tight .
But it was quite flyable with the Factory Tx , would have been even better Mode 2 .
I would suggest a CG of 25mm for a maiden , for those Noobs...Continue Reading

V911 3D printed HLG (9 min 26 sec)

3D printed Hand Launch Glider ...

Been a long time .....

First attempt was a fail COS I designed the all moving elevator poorly ..
On launch the elevator would move due the the control wire not being able to stop the elevator ..

So . took a while to design and print a new all moving elevator .. Then implement the change ...
And even longer to test fly .
Elevator seems fine ..
What is not fine is the C of G ... It's too far back ...
I will have to go thru my battery collection for a better battery ( more weight forward ) ...

Also have to fix the servo arms contacting the nose cone ...
Plan was to design and print a new glider by now ... Oh those plans !
Unfortunately , there is a shortage of everything I need ..
And prices are high ..

Oh man !
So I have been trying out a few other Operating Systems ( Linux based ) ..
From time to time I download the latest releases and then try them out VIA VirtualBox .
To date only one OS has impressed , and that's MINT . ( LinuxMint )

From time to time , GhostBSD also works ..

Problem with most of the BSD out there is the install .. It's so parking antiquated and some times overly complicated ..
And should you install it ( BSD ) , then booting into the OS fails ..... PITA !
Butt ... Every now and again they get it right .. ANd then not !

GhostBSD is like that ! One revision installed just fine and booted without issue .. Then the next one ( updated ) fails to boot .
And then the next one ( 21.11.24 ) installs and boots fine . So if you have been itching for a Painless BSD ( there's a new flavor ) , then GhostBSD 21.11.24 might be worth a try . ( If you haves BSD itch ) .
The list of Linux flavors that just don't cut it for me is huge ....
The only flavor I would recommend as a primary or 2nd OS is Mint .
Has good software ( 3rd party ) support and runs without issue . A lot of other Linux flavors have limited 3rd party software available and wont run a lot of Linux developed software offered out there .
So picking a linux flavor ( for me ) comes down to ..

Ease of install
Function ( set up )
Software availability ( compatibility )
And being able to navigate the menue's ( get under the hood so to speak )
When it...Continue Reading

Sorry ....
Capacitor system pictured ..
While the battery box is attached , the capacitor is charged but the motor does not run ..
As soon as you pull / remove the battery box , the motor runs ..

Picture 2 :

I want to try a geared prop on the Lipo system and the capacitor system ...

And then maybe design a simple FF glider / plane ... Maybe from Depron ?

Have you been looking for a simple power source for your FF project ?

There are two types you can salvage / RIP from what's available on FeeBay ( I call them that now Cos their seller fees keep going up and up )
Anyways ...

You have your LIPO system and the CAPACITOR system .

LIPO SYSTEM :

This consists of a motor / lipo / and a USB charger / timer .. I would suggest that this is what most people might (?) want , as it provides a timed full power run .

CAPACITOR SYSTEM :

This is just a capacitor and motor with a plug for a 3AA power source . The plug allows the capacitor to charge and stops the motor from running while charging the capacitor . As soon as you remove your power source the motor starts to run ..
But also as quickly as the motor starts you begin to lose power as the capacitor drops charge .

What I like :

Both systems allow you to Chop and Change ... Customize .
Change motors so you can run the prop you want , change batteries to get CG .. ( Or capacitor ? )
Pretty much , only your imagination is the limiting factor .

Where ?

If you want to play ? Then Feebay might be the place to look ..
Foam Glider / Hand Throw / Foam Plane / etc might be some worth while search criteria .
Also you might chose a plane wisely and it flies as is ...
Now I have purchased a few of these over the last few years , and most fly like they look they would ( not so great ) .
But a few have shown promise . One thing , none of them like wind !
And if there is something we have had in abundance the last few years is wind !
But I did essentially buy them for their power systems ..
And a few posts ago I did show what could be done ( my first attempt at a decent FF electric )

Part 1 ) Ordered a few months ago in hopes of getting it some time in 2021 .... ( yay )

A) Knife seems to be ok ( Looks / Feels )
B) Sheath is kydex and does not tick any boxes for me
C) Thankfully I have a leather sheath that looks to work ( Spare )

There was some rough spots on the edge , and I stropped them away ..
Edge is Scandi with a micro bevel / edge .. ( Hmmmm )
Do I fully scandi the edge after I test the factory edge ... (?) I have wanted a D2 scandi , for sure ..
Spine is sharp enough for a ferrite rod ... So should throw sparks .
I have wanted this one for most of 2021 , or since finding out it existed !
Should be interesting !

Brother F005 D2 (7 min 21 sec)

Part 2 ) Factory Edge slices rope ..

First 50 was ok ..
100 still ok
150 and it's getting to be work
200 Fail and it was hard work to slice rope .

Re Sharpen !
OMG .... Getting rid of that Micro Bevel = Massive PITA !!!

OMPHobby S720 (5 min 58 sec)

So , what I hate ...

I try real hard to avoid people , especially when I fly RC .
I dont want to fly near anyone ..

But why do people insist on walking or jogging under the space I am using to fly in ... ?

Here is a guy .... Jogging into the space I was flying in .. Ok , I was using around 50% of the available space ( Football field ) ...
But there was half a football field I was not using ...
So I never saw the guy till after I reviewed the video .. Because from time to time I stop watching the model and quickly scan my surrounds for just such activity ( Space Intruders ) . Some times people want to come over and talk to me .. ( A good time for that would be after I have landed ) ..
Cos most of the time I am watching the model , not the ground around me !
I do the best I can , but sometimes ! They just slip into the flight space ....

I think control line was the worst ... People try to walk over to you wile your flying (?) @ the flying field , thru your lines as you are flying ..
Some people walk into full sized planes props ...
It ticks me off some ...

P1B 1 electric FF (3 min 32 sec)

I got up , and there was zero wind outside ...
It was supposed to be 15 to 25 kmh ............

Put the model in the car ( no wind ) , 2 minute drive to the park = Wind is blowing ..............

Anyways , a quick test chuck ...... A CG adjustment ... And then a power run ..

I was in a hurry , Cos the wind was picking up every second .. ( As I type this it's just about a gale out there )

So looks like proof of concept ....

It's nice to be right some times !
Posted by old4570 | Dec 04, 2021 @ 07:41 PM | 44,055 Views
Hmmmm , In deed .....

Ok the problem with the P1B-1 ...

The folding prop was the problem ..

A) The prop weighs too much
B) RPM and torque roll are effected by the heavy prop
C) Props hangs or folds , changes CG
D) The folding prop is a nasty cheap affair ...

So after a while I realized the folding prop was the problem and the model was hung up as an ornament .

The other day one of my FF models with a timed electrical system fell onto the floor .... Ding Ding !
And a idea flashed into my brain ...
For over a year I have been wondering what to do with the P1B-1 , mostly geared around some form of RC .
But what if I could ? Fit one of these timed electrical power systems ...

The battery fits in the tube , the timer / switch fits in the tube ..
I 3D printed a motor mount for the pusher set up .
The P1B-1 glides amazing without that brick of a factory prop .
The power system has been tested in doors , but not out doors ( very windy ) + the mod is barely 24 hours old .
It looks promising !

I was lucky , the 3D printed mount came out perfect 1st time out .
The motor is a 7mm DIA and the system uses a Lipo battery that is USB charged VIA the timer .
There is not enough power to pull vertical , but horizontal should be fine ..
Hopefully be some fun , especially as the rubber powered factory set up was a PITA .

What I need now !
Is to 3D print a nose cone that allows me to push the start button ..
My 1st attempt at such was a full fail

FMS800 Vtail (5 min 45 sec)

I haven't flown this in a long time ..
The conditions were really sweet , the 800 just needed a little trim ..
Anyone that likes a really gentle flying model ..

This one has a Hobby King folding prop and almost the entire flight was @ 50% throttle .

Micro Tundra crashed and broken (5 min 50 sec)

Wow , what's with the crashing ?
Almost like , flying skills deteriorated after 2 years of lock downs .

Yeah , MT .. I pushed my luck and broke it ..
But , it is reparable ..
Though I cant trust the way the wing mounts ( weak ) without the wing struts ( I broke the plastic ends that screw into the wing / model ) ..
So I will have to resort to old tech ... BBQ skewers and rubber bands for extra hold down power .
Micro Tundra will fly again ..

Crashed the XK A430 (6 min 40 sec)

Oh dear !
Was doing some inverted flying ..
And forgot all about rule No1 .. Don't chase the plane ...

Yes , I began to chase the plane .. & I should have pulled the plug on the inverted flight right away when it happened .
But I thought I could get ahead of it ..

I was wrong ! I had time to pull the plug but got stubborn about it ..
And the XK A430 flew into me ...

No , no pain or suffering , except for the embarrassment !
The XK A430 is so small and light I barely felt the impact .. + I cut the motor just before impact ..
No damage to the A430 .. So just kept flying .
I have to remember , the A430 is a fast angry little monster and things happen quickly .
Which is why you need to be ahead of the plane ..

Oh well , stuff happens and it's good to have a football field to yourself so you can hot dog a little .

Two Battery Morning ( Turbo Timber ) (8 min 41 sec)

After a short sharp 2 month lock down ...

Im a little Rusty ....

First battery to familiarize myself with the TT ...... again !

And the 2nd battery to try some inverted stuff ... Try and pick up where I left off .

This was Melbourne Cup morning ...

Anyways , the TX16 sure gives a slow roll ... Might have to go back to the Taranis .
Also , might need a new motor ...
Really feeling the lack of power with the TT , just needs more , just Turbo it a little .
The two blade is better than the 3 blade , just needs ....................... more
It's almost there , just not quite reaching it's full potential .
And I am not brave enough to 3s it ..
So I might want to start looking at a new motor ..

Perfect RC morning XK A430 (6 min 3 sec)

It was supposed to be windy !

My back kicked me out off bed around 6.30am ... So after hitting the porcelain , I went to get a drink ..
Glancing out the window , Blue Sky and a perfect chalm ...

So I grabbed the XK A430 and went out for my morning walk / fly / walk back home .
As soon as I closed the front door on my return , the predicted wind came up .. And the wind blew for the rest of the day .

Still rusty azzzz can be !

But I did try a fair amount of inverted action ... It's tough when for two months ( quick sharp lock down ) your under 22 hour house arrest and no outdoor activities are permitted ...
I mean , just how much of a threat is a guy standing in the middle of a football field flying a Micro Electric Plane by himself ? ( Verboten )
Such is life in a Convict Colony ...
And all the rubbish Stalin wanted , Dangerous Dan is making a reality ! All Hail Ming the Merciless !

XK A430 nearly hits the ground (5 min 16 sec)

I over rotated in a turn and almost crash the A430 ..
Really need to be careful with this plane as the roll rate is crazy .

Still , a amazing morning that quickly turned into a windy rainy day once I was done !

If only I had known earlier it would be such a nice morning ..

The rust is showing from all that Gooberment protection . ( Super Nany State )

Sports Cub S2 (6 min 4 sec)

Yeah , two months since last I took the sticks .
When will the insanity end ? I guess when and if the insane are voted out of office ! ( I guess )
But when you give people power ! Are they prepared to give it up .

Warning to the world , Oz is top heavy with power ( the people are powerless ) .
Is this the path you want to take ?
For the last two years I have seen stupidity at it's best from our alleged leaders ( I didny vote for them ) .
So , if you vote stupid ! = You get stupid !
Or as the saying goes .... You get the government you deserve ! ( you voted for them )
Austrlian's have been punished for their electoral choices , will they learn ? History tells us No !

Does this mean GB is back ?
