The cowl uses 3 screws to secure it to the nacelle. Once those are removed you still have to remove the spinner bolt, adapter nut, prop, and backplate. If you can’t remove the prop because of a jammed nut or stripped collet threads then cutting the cowl away is one way. Here is a cowl that uses red (or white) electrical tape to hide the cut line. The top tape can stay in place and act as a hinge. The remaining cut lines can be hidden or left visible as the 3 screws will secure the cowl to the nacelle.

I made up a tool to keep the the motor from turning while tightening the prop adapter nut. If you can’t keep the motor from spinning by gripping the spinner backplate you must grip the motor. Removing the cowl with this clamshell mod will allow you to do this and screw it back in place. If you have a prop strike and suspect a loose motor mount this mod allows you to inspect the motor area quicker because the prop will not have to be removed.

The top hinge can be made from any kind of tape. I have been using a Tyvek paper hinges on flaps and other flight controls and CA works excellent on plastic if it’s sanded first. However clear or electrical tape can be used.

subtitled "how to flash additional protocols to the irx4 (first version) using a simple usb link to the taranis x9d+"

okay, it's not actually magic, it's flashing new and clever firmware to allow additional protocols to be added to the multimodule using the same plain usb cable that you use to connect to openTx companion, rendering the usb cp2012 breakout and wiring to an opened multimodule redundant

trust me, you'll believe it is magic once you've done the upgrade

my considerable gratitude to pascal (hpnuts) and ben (benzo99) for their assistance in guiding me through a significant simplification in the process to upgrade the irx4 module (that's it in the picture in the post below this)

realistically, all you need is here :

anything else is linked conveniently from that link

since i did it from scratch well over a year (or maybe two) ago, there has been a release of the "flash multi" app that makes it way simpler

the only bits you will need are :
and the phillips head screwdriver to undo the irx4

oh, and if you don't have one, the iRangeX irx4 module - go on, use my affiliate link and make me filthy rich (i wish)

follow the recipe and after the initial...Continue Reading

Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE 5KM 4K 3 axis gimbal
372 € - $ 409 - Banggood GWTR Warehous Coupon: BGFIMIX8DQ
This is the 4K version of Xiaomi Video drone which has real 3 axis stabilization and a 4K camera. The good thing is that the video image is transmitted digitally in HD live up to 5km. GPS with all the important functions like following, selfie gestures, flying around an object are included.

I am excited about the video drone. A very good control to which an iPhone or Android mobile phone is connected. The app works very well. The most important feature I'm interested in is always the video quality and above all how well I can control the drone while filming without something in the picture jerky. Due to the slightly more weight of the FIMI the drone stays calm in the air. A wind does not bother here at all.
I find the camera guidance very good on the FIMI remote control. All panning and movements are very good straight away and the video looks every soft. Such a good quality I know only from DJI. Here Xiaomi shows that you can make even for less a perfect video drone.
The Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE is better than the DJI Sparks or DJI Mavic Air and comes close to the DJI Mavic Pro.

- stabilized with 3 axis video camera
- Very good 4K camera
- Flight time over 32 minutes
- 5KM range
- very stable flight

- nothing

"One who fails to reach the Great Wall is not a hero." The Great Wall is known as one of China's symbols. But this majestic ancient building that has stood in China for nearly two thousand years has long lost its original majesty due to the erosion of the years.

The Great Wall, the "Great Wall" in our mouth, is the greatest and most majestic military defense project in ancient China. The oldest Great Wall in history dates back to the Western Zhou Dynasty. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the Great Wall built the first climax, and the various vassal states built the Great Wall fortifications on their respective borders. However, the Great Wall during this period was relatively short and relatively low. After Qin and the Six Kingdoms joined together with China, they repaired the Great Wall links of the various vassal states and they were known as the Great Wall. The Ming Dynasty was the last era to overhaul the Great Wall. The Great Wall that we can see this year is mostly the buildings of this period.

The Great Wall resources are mainly distributed in 15 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions such as Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Henan, Ningxia and Xinjiang. According to the National Great Wall Resources Survey conducted by the Chinese Cultural Relics and Surveying and Mapping Department, the total length of the Ming Great Wall is 8851.8 kilometers. According to...Continue Reading

The next logical extension of the DIY Afterburner LED unit was to ADD more functions. Seeing a microcontroller can do a LOT of things... it may as well be set up to do all the common things you might want or need.

1) Afterburner LED system - with two Modes of operation.
Mode 1: Off, or Afterburner ON = Flicker constantly (for older era jets)
Mode 2: Off, or Afterburner ON via a short Flicker (for AB ignition) and the ON Solidly (for more modern jets)

2) Strobe Light Outputs - for Three different timing version Strobes.

3) Super Gear Sequencer.
a) Two modes - Main Gear Doors close after Gear Extension.... or they stay open.
b) All Servo Endpoints can be individually set, so that the Doors are accurately opened and closed.
c) Door Operation Speed can be altered.
d) 'Memory' of the last used state, so that it can resume the same state on the next power up
e) Tracks the state of doors and retracts so that any decision to change gear direction part way through a cycle still 'reverses' everything in a correct order so there are never any 'collisions' of Doors/Retracts.

It has some Options. Such as:
- The afterburner can have a trim pot added to allow real--time setting of the AB/Throttle Trigger point.
- A Pin Header jumper to enable/choose Mode1 Afterburner (it defaults to Mode0).
- A Pin Header jumper to select the Gear Doors operation mode

It is 95% all done - the coding is done and works, but I have not made up any document(s) for it yet.
I am also still...Continue Reading

The Esprit Prop Shaft Adapter is about 30 % bigger than the stock unit so you can put more torque on the nut and threads. This translates so about 30% more gripping power between the aluminum collet and steel 5 mm motor shaft. In Jason M’s video he recommends holding the spinner backplate or motor to keep the threaded adaptor from turning. This is done with one hand while the other hand uses a wrench to tighten the nut.

I made up a tool that slips into one of the 4 motor cooling slots and this keeps the motor/shaft from turning while the collet is being tightened onto the shaft. It’s a steel 6 “ mending bar that I cut with a hacksaw and filed down to fit the slot. It’s bent into an “S” shape to fit between the prop and plastic nacelle. The nacelle is cut out for clearance.

Hi all,
I really hope to get the issues related to interaction with everyone resolved. I am hoping to hear from people, share progress, and learn from you all.

Below are pics of my progress. The fuselage is nearing completion of the Balsa wood build phase. I have sanded and applied filler, it is nice to see the classic B-17 “lines”.

Most of my electronic parts have arrived. I am waiting for the control lines as I hope to install them next to seal up the fuselage.

Found another great new spot for some close proximity fpv flying. It gave me a chance to test out the Lumenier AXII Long Range Antenna on my goggles for penetration. There were far too many people around to test long range today but the new long antenna is a great improvement over the stock anttenna, especially as I sit down to fly.

NEW Lumenier AXII Long Range:

Piecing together a canopy has been interesting. The acetate has to be curved. Fastening “glass” to the ply formers has been a challenge.

I started with cardboard cutouts. I had an old cowl that was perfectly curved. It also handles the heat from my heat gun.

Glues wouldn’t stick. I found that CA provided a strong surface. I used double-sided clear tape. It’s an experiment right now. However, I like the acetate the im using. Keeping the inside clean will be important.

My plan is to cut out 1/32” ply frames to glue over the joints.

OK just received mine. Looks like the FTr16 receiver might be complicated. I saw a lot of threads where all any one wanted to do was complain. Change is good, and acceptance can save you money and reduce stress. So I say the PL18 probably saved me anywhere from 200 to 800 dollars. I like the lipo internal for multiple reasons, like it makes me ensure I don't be lazy and not charge, it can last up to 8 hours of fly time and most likely will, can be charged wirelessly and Micro USB so if I'm weak enough to not charge before I go to the field and even forget my Micro USB cord and remember to bring the wireless unit I can still charge. I fly airplanes, helis and am building a hex copter and am willing to bet that I will be able to use it for my hovercraft and my PT 109. It feels great in my hands, it warns me of errors I am making before I cause myself problems, tells me the battery left on both Tx and Rx with a simple graphic representation. And I still haven't found out a minuscule fraction of the capabilities available. If you are scared to buy one, download the operators manual and quick start guides and learn about it before you sell it short. It looks like the racing receiver is a bit complicated, but because I build from balsa plywood basswood and plans, I'm sure I will enjoy the challenge. Came to me from Hong Kong in about 10 days. Can't wait to launch my hex with this radidio.
