Every last Friday of the month is Indoor Whoop night. We've got a shed loads of gates, infinity tunnel and timing system. It's always fun when someone shows up with something different and landing on the RC crawler was awesome! It's becoming a tradition to bounce off Clive's belly for some reason.

I tried a fiberglass and wood Sport Jet kit back in 2000 on an asphalt runway. However minor dips in the runway resulted in pre mature lift off below minimum control speed that resulted in take off crashes. I used stomp launchers but put the model away until EDF design improved. The Marlin is a big improvement that has rugged gear and can be hand launched if desired. I want wheels!

The Marlin “trainer jet” has quicker acceleration but still has no shock absorption for take offs or landings.

The stock Marlin wheel tires are hard and offer no shock absorbing for take offs or touchdowns. The result is a bounce that creates a crash condition either below minimum controls speed or while accelerating to minimum control speed during take off or go around. Unlike full scale aircraft and RC automobiles with hydraulic shock absorbers our fixed wing RC models (with some exception) have no shock absorption. Low Bounce wheels such as the Du-Bro Cat.No. 175T offer shock absorbing action that mitigates bouncing. You can remove the landing gear and hand launch but this may not be your style of operating this EDF. The Marlin has fixed gear and has no risk of retract failure which is an advantage to the design.

Pry off the C clips with a sharp awl or pin in an area that you can find the clip if it flys off. Putting the gear in a clear baggy can help capture the c clip.

After continued motor overheating, the latest theory is the motor wiring is getting snared in the encoder, causing the motor to stall. It's a tangled mess after many rebuilds. The right tire, right wheel, motor cover, motor plate all need to be reprinted. It needs to be rebuilt, with the cable untangled. It's a several day job. The short term solution is keeping the wires under tension so they don't flop into the encoder.

The CAD model doesn't show any obvious way for a cable to get into the encoder. The cables are on the outside of the TPU.

Pitts Sky Car "Umbrella" Ornithopter (2 min 8 sec)

We have all seen the movies of this early ornithopter pumping and bouncing as seen in the 2nd video below and had a good laugh. However, the idea was not quite as ridiculous as it may seem at first sight.

The "umbrella" was not just a simple membrane which of course would be unable to provide any lift. It was in fact an ingenious and sophisticated device that had been well thought out even if it wasn't successful.

It was composed of sixty radial slats that opened on the upstroke allowing air to pass through and closed on the downstroke trapping and forcing air down. In addition, it also spun on each stroke in an attempt to generate more lift. These movements were driven by a complex mechanism with gears and cranks to generate the spin and reciprocation. 

"Jack" John W. Pitts filed a Patent for his idea in 1924 which was granted in 1926. Pitts, in collaboration with W. P. Kindree constructed two versions, the first of which was tested in 1928. 

Apart from the Patent and newsreel movies that were made, little more is known about Pitts or his aircraft. 

The first version which is modeled here was powered by a 65 hp engine of unknown manufacture. The second version was much more robust but weighed a massive 1,200 Kg (!) and was powered by a Curtis OX-5 90 hp engine.

Piel CP.30 Emeraude: After flying and building a few Pinocchios, Claude Piel had started Avions Claude Piel to sell aircraft plans. The first set of plans that really attracted customers was the CP.30 Emeraude.

The Emeraude was an enlarged version of the CP.20 Pinocchio. Scaled up large enough to fit two people seated side-by-side. The original Emeraude was built to be extremely lightweight and had just a 65hp Continental to power it. It still had the beautiful elliptical wing under it (with full elliptical tips) and was constructed entirely of wood. Unfortunately with revisions to the plans those pretty elliptical tips got clipped almost immediately.

The Emeraude was clearly garnering interest, so Piel decided to license it for production. At least 11 producers manufactured Emeraudes or airplanes based off of it. They were produced in France, England and South Africa. Most production versions housed a larger engine of some sort. Emeraudes have been flown with almost every major production 4 cylinder Continental and Lycoming. (A-65, C-85, C-90, O-200, O-235, O-320, O-360)

While manufacturers continued to evolve the design, so did Piel. The Emeraude evolved through at least 22 variations. The variations included mostly different engines and small structural changes. The first major update of the airplane was the Super Emeraude which looked very similar but was strengthened and certified for aerobatics.

Piel Pinocchio: The history of the Pinocchio, not unlike many other vintage airplanes, is incredibly hard to follow. The CP.10, CP.20, CP.90, CP.210, CP.211, CP.212 and CP. 215 were all named the Pinnochio and some were vastly different airplanes.

Technically the story of the Pinocchio starts with the CP.10. In 1948 Claude Piel, in his ambition to begin designing airplanes, built the CP.10. The airplane was significantly based (okay you could say copied off of) the Mignet Pou du Ciel “Flying Flea” and was powered with a Ppinsard 25 hp two cylinder opposed engine. While the first Pinocchio was successfully flown, it was a short lived success. 5 hours and 30 minutes to be exact. The Pinocchio didn’t quite make it to six hours of flying time before it crashed with Piel at the controls.

Abandoning the strange design of the Pou du Ciel, Piel started a new design from scratch. The CP.20 bore the same name but the similarities stopped there. The new design was now influenced by the Spitfire. But scaled down to tiny proportions. It had an intricate wooden elliptical cantilever wing which would turn out to be Piel’s signature design. Up front was a whopping 25 Volkswagen produced horsepower. The tiny cockpit seated only one with a handsome bubble canopy overhead.

I recently bought an estate sale lot of rc planes and equipment. Attached is a plane that i cannot identify. It needs a new firewall and I have an engine for it. Its probably pre 1980 since the servos are futaba and have a square piece for the control arm to attach. Its an F14 USS America designed for an engine with propeller up front. It has air retracts. I would like to get drawings so i can make a new firewall. Any help identifying it would be appreciated

A few months ago my GWS pico Tiger Moth sustained an ugly Right Wing Crash because I erroneously took out almost all of the wing dihedral and was stupid enough to hand launch it and it slipped into an inverted flying position. Fortunately, I was able to recover it in time and had the model flying right-side UP again but, the landing was not good and Right Wing ripped.

My efforts of gluing it back was amateur like by leaving the wing in a position while glue was curing that caused some sort of wing distortion (Wash-In) instead of Wash-Out, definitely the two wings not matching for sure. I made sure that the wing dihedral was placed back by gluing an Aluminum short Tube at the bottom of bottom wing, however, during in-flight observations, the Tiger Moth was observed to stray (slide) to lean towards the Right (a gentle stall) while mid-flight. Correcting this was no issue by applying a slight down Elevator and of course a tiny amount of Left Rudder.

However, all of this has caused me to re-think things as my Tiger Moth is no longer "Hands-Free" type of flying and you have to watch it carefully. I have taken steps to correct the Wash-In and settled using some home made tools (Large Clamp with heavy magnets) to pull down the rearward bottom Right Wing to at least match the Left wing.

No guarantee of the results but, I just hate breaking up the bottom Right wing again to provide the correct amount of Wash-Out and the glue etc...

Everyone that has seen it fly recently with this wing issue says it still flys majestic but, guess who has to correct at the controls!

The wing profile is enough to give you headaches, double curved with drooping leading edge, a bit like the Concorde . There are no two identical ribs from root to tip.

Piel Homebuilts: Today Richard VanGrunsven has made homebuilding aircraft a very reachable goal with Vans aircraft. Of course Vans has a single seat version, two seat versions in both side-by-side and tandem variants and a four seat version. While that seems like a neat modern idea, a little french company actually had a very similar lineup a long time before Vans.

Claude Piel’s first particularly successful airplane was the CP.20 Pinocchio. Even being the first airplane in the Piel lineup, it carried the signature design feature. All of the Piel airplanes feature a complex elliptical wing not unlike that of a spitfire. The little single seat Pinocchio had a tiny VW engine up front which made it a nice flier. About 20 CP.20s were built with a handful of engines including one powered by a Salmson AD9 9 cylinder 40hp radial. (I can’t find any pictures but it must have looked awesome)

With the success of his first design egging him one, Piel designed a series of aircraft which may be the most popular french homebuilts. The Pinocchio was the single seat version. Next up was the Emeraude which was an enlarged Pinocchio with two side-by-side seats. Then came the Diamant which was increased in size yet again allowing for four seats. And finally came the Beryl which was the same size as the Emeraude but seated two in tandem. His plans also included nosewheel options in some cases just like RV does today.

Although it only has 0702 motors, the 65mm Whoop flies great and finally without failsafe thanks to ExpressLRS, and the VTX is really good at 25mW
