Here she is out is out the winter sun.
This is the first time in about 20yrs that I have covered a whole plane with the Burnished silver / Chrome , last time it was monokote this is the HK silver .

Next up cover the wing

I had some solartex {sky blue} but had never used it before.
I know that it is highly prized and the slope guys love it so I thought I would give it a try and see if I could cover the epp canopy on my DAW P-51 with it in just one piece .

Finally The wind picked up from The good direction along with the snow that always results from blowing in off the lake at this time of year .
I picked my "Sally" and "Gerry " to accompany me on this outing .
The last time out The Sally got all the air time so Gerry was first up
The wind was steady at 22 mph so the launch was a non event easily leaving my hand and getting up on step ,she has a motor and a folding prop but I have not had a ESC in it in a couple of years ,Its nice to have back up power but I prefer to soar....probably should at least take the prop blades off
I flew most of the afternoon with Her , she is not a lite weight but also is pretty efficient so can handle the ebbs of wind and lift and really turns on when things pick up .
After about 45 min I brought her down and flew the Sally ,my second time out with her.
The wind was building and the Sally is under 24 oz but had no problem penetrating the gusts ,I wound up putting in a couple of clicks of down and will check the elevator trim later tonight , A Great all around flyer
So Good to get back out for some fresh air and stick time

I spent a little time yesterday laying down 3 mil laminating film on the 1-26 .
The fuse is now ready for it's color

I spent last evening with my monokote iron working on the tail group of the DAW 1-26 and DAW P-51 Mustang
Its so relaxing to lay some covering down and see projects nearing completion
The 1-26 needs to have the control snakes installed ,plastic covers added over the tops of the servos and then the fuse can be covered .

The Mustang fuse is ready for some 3M- 77, stapping tape and then covering .
I am using the HK covering on both planes ,it is nice to work with

I f you have been following my blog/build on the DAW Mustang you might have notice a picture or 2 of something else being worked on .
Yes -a old school DAW 2m 1-26 .
The build has some modifications to the standard build of yesteryear :
First - I have cut the fuse down the middle to add a carbon rod for strength,
I also added a coroplast nose/spine to the front of the plane to protect the battery {I use LiFe batteries and I know that fire concerns are a very real hazard in other parts of the country and else where in the world } the plastic nose makes the servo placement easy and strong and should keep the shape of the nose intact even in the worst crash I could imagine

Second - I made the wing 2 piece along with a removable stab to make transportation/shipping easy { Thank You Jan for the modification Help ! }

Oh boy the weather pattern continues
Same as last week steady 20 or so with +30 mph gusts...And started out with some sunshine before the snow squalls moved

I brought out the 2m Gerry and maidened a 56 inch " Sally" from the GEMS boys in Cleveland -
As it turned out I only flew the Sally, put in a hour flight and had a Blast
What a great flying ship !
Mine comes in at 24 oz with a removable wing and rudder,there is plenty of room for ballast if desired

I got out for some sloping after work today.
temps in the mid 20's
Wind coming right up the hill in the mid 20's with gusts over 30 mph
It was snowing hard with squalls and very limited visibility when I arrived at the bottom of the hill , {You have to walk to the top once you make the drive out there } by the time I got to the top most of the snow was moved off
Flew my trusty {and worn } Knife Edge wing
I brought out my 2m T-tail Gerry - it flew awesome, the only difficulty I had was getting it back on the ground as it was starting to get dark - I really need to get spoilerons programmed

I sure hope this wind patter continues , being able to slope once every 7 days is Great !

The start of a New Year and on the Slope -
January 1st and flyable wind - 15 to 23 mph crossed most of the time,temps in the mid 30's with a occasional snow flake
I flew 3 out of the 4 ships I brought to the top ,
The Dan Wing 2 18oz : flew fine,would penetrate the Gusts and stay aloft in the lulls , nothing fancy just cruising around for about 20 min .

Knife Edge 26 oz : carries its energy well and will glide through the sink/lulls if flown smooth ,turns on in the gusts and when the wind shifted straight up the hill - only flew for around 15 min ,got caught low on the hill with a wind shift/lull ... a walk down and back gets your blood pumping

Ka - 8 : finished up the rest of my time out {around a hour} perfect bird for the conditions
Wind / no Wind/ sink/crossed such a great flying plane
Time to get home - I have planes to complete

The Balsa tail feathers are cut out,fit and ready for final shaping/ hinging
The Mustang is just to pretty a ship to hang coraplast tail feathers off the back end, even as a stand off scale / combat

I have not posted pictures/progress on the P-51 but I have been moving along on it

I did a rough balance on the plane with all the components in their aprox. place - using the coraplast tail feather I would need to add 3.5 oz of lead to balance .
With balsa tails it more like .75 oz
I am going with balsa tails.
I have roughed out the pieces and the glue is drying on the rudder front/back pieces .
Getting close to tape ing the fuse and adding the tail

The last 3 times out on the hill {this fall/winter} my hands have gotten pretty cold .
I thought it is about time to do something about the cold as the temps have only been in the low 30's and it gets a lot colder than that here once winter really sets in .
This is the Turnigy transmitter glove ,I had gotten it for Christmas a while ago and had not really given it a try .

I have to say it worked pretty good as long as I could launch with my left and have my right hand in the glove on the stick.
I did fumble a bit getting the left one in, besides the transmitter neck strap i think it needs a attachment point in the middle {on my stomach } to hold it square to my body .
I am also considering adding a Zippo hand /pocket warmer to the glove
I will say that my hands did not get cod / hurting this time out

Ok - here we are again and now the snow is gone,a light mist with temps in the mid 30's
The forecast originally predicted 11 to 12 mph from the west,I was pleasantly surprised to find it had turned NW
I had not tried flying our hill with the speeds so low but I am aiming at flying once a week if anything close to flyable presents itself

I have a Alcyone - a 3m thermal ship from the 90's that I had not maidened yet so I brought it out
Actual measured wind at the top was between 8 and 15
Launch was a non event , it flew great and tooled around at a pretty good clip for around 15 to 20 minute by which time my right hand was getting really cold ,burning ,I only had put on a light cloth glove so I didn't have a problem launching,once they got damp they were cold.
This has Huge flaps so I cranked them down and fed in down elevator {I did not have any mix programmed yet, This full house stuff is new to me }
Of course the wind/lift picked up didn't want to come down , made 3 or 4 full circuits of the hill with full flaps ,when I flattened it out it went up ,if i pushed more down it picked up speed - it would have been more fun if my hand didn't hurt so bad
The next pass I cam in low on the hill and did a mini pop up to kill the speed and let it back up the hill and then a slight push to settle her in.
I guess I will see if mixing in some spoiler {up Aileron }will add enough drag to kill the forward momentum better.

Maybe I will get some sunshine on my next outing

Wind again from the right direction
forecast called for 15/16 mph and ramping down
When I got to the top at 2:30 I found steady 28 with pulsing sustained gust in the mid 30's
If I had know I would have brought heavier ships..
I flew my 30"12 oz Sizzle for 45 minutes - a amazing little wing ! see { }
I had snow squalls blowing over that limited visibility ,really had to concentrate to keep it in site and not get blown over the back
Next I put my Parkzone Ka -8 up , the wind had subsided to the mid to high 20's most of the time ,blasted around with it for the next 45 or so minutes
When it started to get dark I landed and headed home - a Great way to end the day

The wings are joined ,spackled and ready for the top hinge linkage , then glass the center section
The fuse has been spackled ,sanded , is ready for the elevator control snake
I plan to make the wing a bolt on with 2 - 1/4/20 plastic bolts
I need to do a rough balance ,and see what the plastic tails cost me in added weight
I am leaning toward balsa a tail group if I find I have some 3/16 laying around
I checked and do not have a plastic p-51 canopy that will fit ,let's see how the shaping of the epp one goes
