After a long break from designing and building, I think I'm finally ready to get back to it. For this project, I'm looking at the F4U Corsair, nicknamed "whistling death" by the Japanese in WWII for the unique sound the Corsair made from the wind in the ports along the leading edge of the wing that fed the oil coolers. Like a lot of modelers, I get super excited about the next one and so I have several that I still need to finish like the rebuild of the Fokker DVIII, Airco D.H. 2, and the Nieuport 28. My friend CA'ed Fingers built a really nice looking 1:60 N 28 from my plans. I think that I'd like to get away from the WWI fighters for a bit and try something that might be a little more 'simple'. The WWI fighters are just too interesting not to model, but they are pretty difficult to get to fly!

So, as always, I enjoy reading the history of the planes I model. Most of this I found on Wikipedia , but it is some pretty interesting stuff. The most striking feature of the Corsair has definitely got to be the inverted 'gull wing'. Form definitely follows function in this case. The Corsair was developed to be a carrier based fighter/bomber, so it needed to have the folding wing capability. Therefore, the designers needed the landing gear to be able to retract from front to back to fit the hinges and folding mechanism into the wing. I am a huge fan of the WWI fighters and it seemed like my next one should be a Nieuport 28. Several people requested that I upscale the 1:48 (7" WS) Fokker DVIII for the Parkzone Minimum gear, so I think I'm going to start this one planning around a little bit larger scale. Bumping up the scale should allow me to include more detail and I'm also thinking that I'd ultimately like to end up with a more complete plan with some build instructions and photos to better document the build process. Similar to my other projects, I will be using lots of photos, 3 views, and particularly the Fiddlersgreen plan.

Gear for my Nieuport will be Plantraco (since I already have it) Micro9 Rx with MicroActs and a GB03 gearbox. I am hoping for an AUW somewhere between 12g - 13g. I have not built anything with the Parkzone stuff, so I'm not familiar with the dimensions, thrust, or weights, but from what I've read I may end up enlarging the original plans to accept it. Once the plans are finished, its a simple exercise to change the scale.

As always, to get myself prepared for this design process, I scoured the net for information on the Nieuport 28. What initially attracted me to the 28 was its clean lines and nice shape and also that it was the first American fighter, purchased from the French for $18,500 each. While I'm waiting on parts to arrive to complete my Fokker DVIII, I thought I might get some plans going for another WWI fighter. I've always liked the Airco D.H. 2 since it is such a uniquely shaped plane. I'll start this thread off like I did the thread of the DVIII, since I like learning some of the history of the plane before trying to model it.

The Airco D.H. 2 was developed as a light single seat fighter to counter the "Fokker Scourge" from the Fokker EIII's, the first fighter with a synchronized forward firing machine gun. The D.H. 2 was De Havilland's design based on the tactic that it was better to aim the aircraft at targets instead of having a pivoting gun. It was noted by both sides that the D.H. 2 was more than a match for the EIII's and was instrumental in the British regaining air superiority.

This micro will be much like the DVIII, although I think since it is a biplane, I'm going to try a slightly smaller scale. I'm not quite up to trying a 1:72, and I think this is way to small for even the Plantraco gear especially with my limited skill. I've started some plans at 1:60 which should still give me plenty of wing area to support a 3 - 3.5g model. Attached is a good 3 view that I found that I have used as a base for the graphics.

I've just recently finished my 5" Tiger Moth and I learned quite a bit in the process of making it so I've decided to design another semi-scale plane. I've always wanted to build a little WWI fighter so I chose the Fokker DVIII.

Just a little history that I found about the DVIII. It arrived late in the war (only a couple of months before the end I think) so only about 290 were built. I also think this is why I had a hard time finding any paint schemes of famous aces. The DVIII was a very maneuverable plane that was grounded for a time because the wing struts kept failing. It was later discovered that sub-standard timber was being used to construct the aircraft. The problem was corrected but the DVIII's late entrance wasn't in time to make too much of a difference. The DVIII earned the nickname "Flying Razor" for it's straight wing.

Attached are 2 color schemes that I've been working on. I've built one test model and did some adjusting, so I think that the plan is complete. I did actually find some evidence that the green scheme was historically accurate. The black and white one I just made up based off of what I saw from some other WWI fighters.
