first piroflips today. lost orientation after the second attempt, but was able to auto it in to the tall grass sans damage. spooled back up and shot another auto for good measure.

all in all, 8 good flights today, though the tail felt wonky during the last two flights of the 450.

in other news, sold the variant and bought a used logo 500.

I got tired of the elevator servo obstetrics on the variant, so I installed some sullivan gold-n-rod.

Also found that the self-tapping screws on the plastic canopy bolts on the 450 would eventually back out in flight, leading to vibration. Switched back to metal and delicious blue loctite.

Good flying today and yesterday. Finally got the 450 vibration-free. Spent most of today practicing close-in "inside" figure eights.

Spent the last month chasing vibes in the 450. Ultimately, the culprit was a bent tail drive assembly. Made some other repairs and upgrades along the way:

* replaced mainshaft bearings
* installed correct washers between radial and thrust bearings in the main grips
* upgraded to v3 tail with a metal control arm
* removed slop from tail grips/linkages
* upgraded to v2 boom/bearing blocks
* corrected the collective pitch ranges, which had always been somewhat asymmetric
* blade tracking is almost perfect

The Variant seems to have picked up some hangar rash; elevator pushrod became detached. I'm tempted to gut it and replace it with flex rod.

Added 4s hyperion packs, 12T pinion, and v3 head block and grips. Swapped the ice lite 50 in from the 500. Tossed on rotortech 350s. Spooled up and noticed some nasty vibrations, discovered that the feathering shaft bolts were loose. Do-over in a few hours after the loctite can cure some more.

I stretched the 450 with the boom, belt, and woodies from an outrage g5. The blade tracking still needs to be dialed in; otherwise, it flew fine. Autorotations were floaty, but the roll rate was lower than it used to be. The 450m bogged a bit on 14T, and the cc35 got hot. Next up:

* 4s+12T
* ice lite 50
* rotortech 350mm CF blades
* v3 head block and grips
* pro tail blades

First crash of the year today. I was attempting some inverted FFF with the 450 when I dumb thumbed it into the ground. The damage is not too bad.

Otherwise, I had 6 mediocre flights today. The sun was still high enough in the sky for good flying, but it was obscured by clouds, leading to diffuse lighting and silhouetted helis. I wasn't really feeling it with the funnels today, but my tictocs were ok.

Did some funnels and more tictocs with the 450 and 500. Did a little tail-in inverted and shot my first "real" autos on the 450. Two of them flopped (no damage), but one was spot on.

Did my first tic tocs with the 450 yesterday.

The 500 was grounded after one flight; the tracking felt off. Upon landing, I discovered a loose mixer arm.

Good flight on the variant as well, though the elevator feels a bit notchy.

First attempt at combining onboard video with hatcam video.

trex 500 picture-in-picture (hd) (2 min 31 sec)

Switched the 450 and 500 to 8 kHz PWM with no ill effects. All electronics came down at reasonable temperatures. The pro 3d blades seem to be holding up well on the 450.

Put about four packs each through the 450 and 500 yesterday and really opened them up for the first time this season. Lots of FFF, some in rate mode. Big loops, some rolls, and some split-s and Immelman turns. Hit LVCO once on the 450. Noticed that two of the landing gear retaining bolts had fallen out of the 500. Thought I'd loctited those...

I picked up a set of inexpensive 335mm CF blades (available from amainhobbies, helidirect, and hobbyking). They didn't fit my 450SE's blade grips, so I ground down the roots by about half a millimeter with a dremel disc and sealed them with CA. Hope they fly ok!

Upgraded the Black and Decker Start-It jump starter to a dedicated 35 Ah SLA which fits nicely into my existing toolbox.

Got heliguard bags for the 450 and 500.

Just installed CF tail blades and paddles on the 450; still awaiting 335mm CF mains.

Got a couple Deans connector housings. They don't fit on to 10awg wire, so I put them on the esc side. I cut some grips into the female connector with a hacksaw.

I created the NIH RC Aeromodelers Facebook group as a way for RC pilots in the Bethesda, MD area to get together.

it was a productive rc day.

manufactured hatcam 2.0, now with laser aiming reticle.

for the 500: swapped a scorpion in for my 500L. had to cut down and chamfer the shaft a bit. also added a detent for the grub screw. put in a 14T pinion and set the governor rpm for 2500.

for the 450: swapped the 450M in for my 430X. went to 14T and set the governor for 2800.

for the variant: swapped out the 10x6 graupner for a 9x5 aeronaut. current draw fell from 45A to 35A, so it should now run cooler and more efficiently.

Gently remaidened the variant yesterday. Found some previously undiscovered damage on the variant 2 wing, so swapped in the variant 3 wing. She didn't want to run upwind so much and was weathervaning a lot in the breeze; still thinking about attaching the rudder. Practiced some long, slow approaches and landed respectably. Used the spoilerons to dump lift and keep the nose high. Kept the prop running at the lowest possible speed, and kept the bank angles shallow.

Uneventful flights with the trex 450 and 500. I'm going to need some better motors and bigger pinions for higher governed headspeeds.

Made a lipo bunker out of a $20 metal toolbox from Ace Hardware. Lined with foam.

Basically done reworking the Variant. Put in a new bulkhead to strengthen the fuselage. Swapped in Align RCE-BL35X. Removed 1oz of lead ballast from the nose and swapped in a 2700 instead of a 2200 mAh 3s pack. Made and installed a plywood firewall to prevent wires from getting anywhere near the outrunner.

With a half charged TP pro power 30c 2700 mAh pack, it pulls about 475 watts on the bench with an aeronaut 10x6 and an axi 2814/12.

Two months after the indoor maiden, I finally had the chance to give the 500esp a proper outdoor maiden; also maidened a friend's protos.

We had good luck with the helitach iphone app; the 500esp was turning about 2500 rpm governed at 85%, while the protos was turning about 2300 rpm.

More photos here.

just clicked buy on a couple of turnigy 6s 40c 2650s for my 500esp. also picked up a tx lipo while i was at it.

hypothetically, said lipos would work nicely in a 12s 600esp rig with a scorpion 4025-630 and castle creations phoenix ice hv 80.
