Best Viewed in Fullscreen and HD! This was by far the most extensive RC Airplane Modification that I've completed.. which I've always made it a goal to make any modification to appear as if "that is how the plane came from the factory." This Champ was no different from that goal, with this only exception; I have always wanted an RC Plane that seemed like it came straight out of the Disney Movie, Planes. Converting this from a 3-Channel Brushed Motor Setup to a 4-Channel 2S Brushless presented some fair puzzles and challenges. Fortunately, I had every part used through this conversion process already sitting in my spare parts box, just waiting to be used.

Hobbyzone "Champ Crophopper" (4-Ch Aileron 2S Brushless) Flight (6 min 15 sec)

Conversion Overview--
Wing and Ailerons: Using the Aileron Molded Panels that were already on the Champ Wing, I carefully cut the sides of the Aileron Panel using a sharp X-Acto Knife and used a flat ruler for a clean straight line as I cut the Aileron Panel. At the Base of the Aileron Panel, I marked 3 .50cm lines evenly spaced and made sure not to cut those lines. Those were to be used as Aileron Hinges. Folding the Ailerons up and down until they freely move, I then applied thin strips of gloss Scotch Tape on the top and underside of those newly made Hinges, making sure to press the Scotch Tape into the Hinge Divots. This will assure that there will be no binding issues when the Ailerons are used. For...Continue Reading

Best viewed in Fullscreen and HD! High Speed Full Throttle Pass Testing with my Parkzone Ultra Micro T-28 Trojan (2S Brushless) "Achilles". After the 2S Brushless Conversion she has gained increased maneuverability, air authority, and an outstanding climb rate. However her full throttle straight line passes are absolutely wicked. You can clearly hear the Doppler Effect as she goes by.

All of her wing surfaces (Main Wing, Rudder, Elevator) have been reinforced with Carbon Fiber Rods, thereby stiffening the airframe considerably.

Aircraft Landing Skill is very important to me and I'm very critical about how I land my planes. When flying RC Aircraft, nothing to me is more satisfying than ending a beautiful flight performance with a smooth rolling landing.

With the T-28 Trojan being my first tricycle-style landing gear aircraft, smooth greasy landings have proven to be a good challenge for me as my experience with RC aircraft have all been tail draggers. With the addition of the 2S Brushless conversion, this challenge has increased significantly as the T-28 has a notable "floaty" characteristic as you approach stall speed. I've also noticed that as you're about to land, you'll want to have your nose wheel facing directly opposing the wind with this plane, or risk a slight tip-over followed by a prop strike. Windy/gusty conditions compound to the difficulty, even with the AS3X on board. Finesse will be required.

This will be a unique training experience.

Best viewed in Fullscreen and HD! Introducing my 3rd successful 2S Brushless Conversion, the Parkzone UM T-28 Trojan (2S Brushless) "Achilles". Parts were obtained from my old UMX Beast 3D "Thunderstruck". I had decided to retire her airframe after a year of learning and training my aerobatics with her and refitted her Receiver Module, 2500KV Motor, Motor Mount, Eflite 5 x 2.75 Prop, and UMX Carbon Cub SS Spinner on a completely brand new Parkzone Ultra Micro T-28 Trojan right out of the box.

The Receiver Module fit very well and no cutting of the Rudder and Elevator Control Rods were required. The most difficult part of the conversion was refitting the Motor Mount in the T-28 Airframe. While there was adequate interior space to fit the Mount, I had to shave some of the Mount for clearance room for the T-28 Steerable Nose Wheel, which also happens to be connected to the Rudder. After several shavings and test fits of the Motor Mount, the fitment was a success with full range of motion.

Because of the added 2S Brushless power to the airframe, I reinforced the T-28 stress points. With a robust carbon fiber rod, I created a wing spar that runs horizontally through her airframe just on top of her designated CG. Because of the rigidity of the spar, I had also reduced her dihedral. I hypothesized that this will only increase her aerobatic abilities while ensuring that there will be no wing snap during mid-flight. The same carbon fiber material...Continue Reading
