Please consider this a living document as I plan to continue to add information.

This is going to be a little dry, but could be useful to those trying to configure the Storm32 gimbal for use in RC cars or other ground vehicles. I'll try and fill in the important stuff now and add more comentary over time, theres no way I'll be able to detail every setting in here. I'm no expert!

Below are screen shots of my setup. If you find this please know that your first stop should be the Storm32 Wiki (linked below), this has way more detail than I intend to go into. I've inluded all the tabs of my setup for completeness. I can guarantee one thing, copying the eveything here into your Gimbal will not work! Some settings will be particular to the RC inputs and physical setup of the gimbal. I'll try to point these out but when in doubt look the setting up in the wiki and inform yourself.

If you enjoy tuning and tweaking settings to fine tune things you will love this, on the other side of the coin I've found that it is possible to 'set it and forget it' as long nothing else changes that impacts the gimbal.

Please note that often settings are repeated for pitch, roll, and yaw. Where this is the case I've only listed the 'pitch' settings but will comment on roll and yaw as well in those sections.

This is a follow on from my previous blog entries regarding ground FPV using a 3 axis gimbal to stabilize the camera. The below pointers assume that the FPV gear is mounted to the chassis under the body shell, also consider that my vehicle is primarily for offroad use. To be honest I plan to try out a cage style body as the visibility off to the sides should be much better. However a few pointers regarding lexan bodyshells below.

The body shell style really impacts FPV view. Consider the shape of the hood, cab height, and the windshield position and angle. All play a really big part of the view available. Proline often has profile views of their body shells on the website which can be quite helpful in making a decision based on these factors. My preference is to have the camera centered left to right and as far toward the rear as possible without cutting my view off. For short course models the proline baja bug has proven to be quite good, primarily just the hood and front wheels are visible while driving. It feels smoother to have less of the car in view, the car will appear to be shaking around in the FPV view, as the camera is stabilized. The less of that thats visible the smoother it will feel. Primarily try to mount the camera so that the view at the top of the frame is just sky, ie not the roof of the car.

Keep side windows clear, cutout windscreen. The lexan/polycabonate is not finished well enough to provide a good view when left clear. Optionally...Continue Reading

FAST OFFROAD FPV RC CARS!!

When it comes to FPV the better you can see the faster you can go! Which is maybe why we see so many fast street vehicles and crawlers out there. Camera shake tends to limit speed over rough terrain, larger vehicles have less of an issue with this, but will eventually experience it if driven towards the limits of performance. The solution I've found is to use a gimbal to smooth out most of the motion of the vehicle, also this can be configured to accept RC inputs for pan and tilt. The only limitation is that if the car rolls over the gimbal needs to be reset, however this can be done remotely, it’s not so bad. I'd love to write a step by step on how to duplicate my setup but that’s a bit much at the moment. Instead this is here to let you know that IT WORKS. The gimbal essentially mimics what your neck would do if you were sat in the vehicle, stabilize your head and eyes.

IT WORKS REALLY WELL! So do it, here are some general working principles to help ensure your success. Maybe I'm missing something but I can't see a better way to drive fast off-road FPV, even slow crawling over rocks is way more enjoyable as the view is not rolling around all over the place.

Hi all, I've decided to use this space to summarize my experience building an rc car that uses a commonly available 3 axis gimbal to stabilize the camera for high speed, all terrain, FPV DRIVING. There are a lot of ways to achieve stable footage in recorded video, but this is not useful for actually driving the vehicle, and not what I am working on.

Let me be clear, I am using the gimbal to stabilize my camera for FPV DRIVING.

Goggles on eyes style, off road, fast, bumps and jumps, powerslides, crawling, bouncing. All experienced from the drivers seat 6 inches off the ground. Why? Because its challenging and fun as hell. It makes for an entirely new RC experience. Got it? Good, lets move on.

My project goals are:
  • High speed off road FPV driving
  • 3d vision with depth perception
  • Ability to look around with pan tilt
  • Short to mid range FPV driving
This blog will go into a bit of depth on certain elements of this build, primarily the gimbal setup. For more up to the moment to moment snippets check out my instgram and youtube
