Continuum V5 joined wing canard glider V5 maiden flight with Mike Frandsen piloting

Q-"Continuum V.5" Maiden Flight with Mike Frandsen.

The Q- "Continuum" V.5 High Performance Joined-Wing Canard Slope Glider, as flown by Mike Frandsen.

Mike being interested in the "front-wheel drive" characteristics, stability, and response, seen here putting the glider to the test.

Featuring a laid up Kevlar-Carbon fiber-fiberglass fuselage from a mold of a 3d printed plug based on the original basswood plug.

New modified, bagged main and canard wings, with Kevlar living-hinges for control surfaces. 3D printed wing joiners, canard mount , and wing inserts of carbon infused PETG. Carbon tube wing rods and premium 3D printed PETG canopy, and "endlets", as we call them.

The Original Q- "Continuum"- V.5 High Performance Joined-Wing Canard Slope Glider maiden video.

There's nothing like having a premier pilot taking a design to it's limits.
Thanks Mike...

Well, I had to try; after resetting my CG to 75mm I found an older prop with a 3 x 4mm set screw. I installed it, although it protrudes, it works. The correct size is 3 x 3mm. New set screws arrive tomorrow. The weight penalty is +4 grams, flying weight 539 grams. Made the drive out to Long Beach, flying much better now, in fact this is best handling airplane I have ever flown, hands down. Fly's straight and level, fast or slow, and maintains a good pitch attitude, I've only seen this in other peoples' planes.

Now the weight reduction task begins. Since I paid for the RTF ship, I believe there is only so much I should put into this effort. But I should at least eliminate the tail weight which at a minimum involves installing a smaller ESC. Need to get specs on the motor first.

It also needs to be noted, the 3mm set screw holding the motor shaft was a bit looser when I returned home. This tells me a pre-flight check of this screw is needed before every flying session. Climbing with less power is an option as is Loctite.

I recorded Tim last night flying his E-flite UMX Turbo Timber. This is the first real world test with my brand new Rode Wireless Go audio setup, so I will be tuning it slightly from here if it seemed too loud. Let me know what you think guys!

Kiber model out of Moldova literally hand makes fiberglass combat planes, and I purchased one after watching the Petroncic Brothers on YouTube review it.

It has 1140mm / 44in wingspan, and put in a E-Flite Power 32, 80amp Turnigy ESC, APC 9x9e prop, HiTec HS 81 servo for the elevator, and Turnigy mico servos in the wings.

I am using a 4s 3300mah battery, and getting about 5-5:30 min flight time at mostly full throttle, with a top speed of 85-90 mph.

You can run a 10x6 prop, which makes it easier to hand launch, but you loose some top speed.

I needed to modify (enlarge) the motor mount area, and shim the motor (down and to the right), and add some balsa to attach the ESC, but it is a really great flyer!...Continue Reading

Yesterday, as I was flying my Alpha, I tried to initiate another climb, but the spinning prop wasn't providing any usable thrust. So thinking the battery might be low, I landed ASAP. I had flown only 4 minutes, so it was unusual. I thought something was loose in the motor, but didn't know what. So I packed it away and enjoyed some time in the park since its a pretty long drive.

When I came home, I realized there was a 3mm set screw that was stripped, which held the motor shaft in place. Since this is the first time I've ever owned a Outrunner motor, I didn't even know this should have been a part of the pre-flight inspection! When I looked closely at the screw and the mounting receptacle, there were obvious metal shavings, so much so in fact the new OD was 2.5mm! To confirm, I was successfully able to fit a 3mm x 9mm bolt into the receptacle to confirm a solid fit. I was concerned about the need to re tap to the next higher size, if this is even possible, or worse case a motor replacement.

So I ordered a bunch of small metric set screws on Amazon Prime, ETA tomorrow. In the meanwhile, I plan on moving the CG aft from 72mm to 75mm. I feel its too nose heavy to slow down enough for thermal flight.

I may or may not go into Long Beach today, its a long drive.

This morning I got up very early to look up installed component model names that are installed in my Supra. My receiver an R6008 HS, and wing servos JR DS 368 are all 6 volt capable.

Also, the shock of my life, as I was in my garage sorting through all the boxes, there was one box behind my transmitter that was marked “car accessories“. Inside this cardboard box cassette tape accessories, a car drink holder from the 1980s, and some other stuff. Since it’s close to my RC gear I always open it to look for something. This morning I was looking for my receipt that would contain the itemized receipt of all radio components installed in my Supra back in 2009. (That information is actually contained in a post here) The receipt was not there, but underneath was some plastic. I turn the box over and to my surprise my Supra canopy was taped to the bottom! I couldn’t believe it. Blue masking tape was always used to secure my Supra canopy since it was so congested in the past. I must’ve left the canopy upside down on the table as I was checking my CG. In the process, I was looking for something and the box was placed on top of the canopy such that it was taped to the bottom of the box, and I never knew it! This could be a comedy skit, ending in tragedy of epic proportions. I do remember thinking the canopy had to be somewhere in the garage as I would never lose track such a thing.

The moral of the story, never leave tape sticky side up, you never know what is going to latch onto! Now I have redundancy since I ordered another canopy.

Yep Les Amis,

Some of you reading this might think I am writing about nothing. The purpose of this blog is document all my changes so I can come back to it. The reason it is public it forces me to make an effort to be clear and concise and even if no one is paying attention, there is some degree of accountability by virtue of it being public. I do reedit my blogs until I am happy it represents my ideas or facts correctly.

Changes to the ship: The included polyhedral wing joiners will be used to produce more lift. The more the better! The 12 gram wire reduction directly underneath center section that joins the fuse will not affect CG, therefore it will not be re-checked. This change does make it easier to attach the center section to the fuse. After looking closely, I decided not the trim the tail servo wires.

The new 100 amp bullet connectors at the ESC that attaches to the battery seems to be loose. When the connectors were first installed, it took an effort to connect both, but now it just slides in a out. NOT GOOD. The chances of an inflight detachment are very small, however I don't want to risk it. I made a "6mm male bullet primer" which is a piece of tapered wood to reshape the male connector back outwards so there is pressure when it inserts into the female connector. Am I the only one to notice this problem? Also, cardboard and tape will be used since I lost my canopy.

Changes to the radio program: a bit more throw for the UP elevator, (50->75 percent).

Another...Continue Reading

1 ◄► It may have been a comedy, or it may have been a tragedy .. (تقدير) estimate sth. / etwas einschtzen .. It cost one man his reason, it cost me a blood-letting, and it cost yet another man the penalties of the law. Yet there was certainly an element of comedy. Well, you shall judge for yourselves.

I remember the date very well, for it was in the same month that Holmes refused a knighthood for services which may perhaps some day be described. I only refer to the matter in passing, .. verb (قدر ) = (take into consideration) .. for in my position of partner and confidant I am obliged to be particularly careful to avoid any indiscretion. I repeat, however, that this enables me to fix the date, .. ( fix / أورد) .. which was the latter end of June, 1902, shortly after the conclusion of the South African War. Holmes had spent several days in bed, as was his habit from time to time, but he (emerged / ورد) that morning with a long foolscap document in his hand and a twinkle of amusement in his austere grey eyes.

"There is a chance for you to make some money. friend Watson," said he. "Have you ever heard the name of Garrideb?"

I admitted that I had not.

"Well, if you can lay your hand upon a Garrideb, there's money in it."
