With a flying weight of under 68 grams a big fun. The FPV Micro Racer is so great to fly. So far, I have had so much fun with only 5 inch racers, but never with a micro racer with a size of 105mm motor distance. Betaflight 4.0.2 is installed on the SailFly X. The throttle is limited to 75%. If the throttle is set to max. 75%, you have no more vibrations and the battery lasts longer. I've taken over the PID settings from the YouTube Albert Kim channel.
The flight behavior of the Micro is awesome. Fly perfectly with the original 3S 300mAh Lipo.
There are only two disadvantages of the SailFly-X and this is the D8 receiver loses the connection after 100 meters and the bad video antenna that does not reach more than 100 meters. I have already flown other racers with 25mW and they had better video channels or antennas and thus a better video reception. The D8 receiver can be replaced by a FrSky R-XSR or with FrSky XM receiver, then you have a perfect reception with 1 to 2 grams more weight. Then I would be at 70 grams takeoff weight. The SailFly is so durable I did not think so. I have repeatedly crashed on the hard ground and nothing. Only the propellers have bent. The propellers I could even turn back and fly on.

The HobbyKing™ Paramotor is extremely easy to fly due to its very gentle and stable flight characteristics yet once you are used to it, it will perform loops and rolls with ease. Some years ago, I wanted to make a LiPo ESR (Effective Series Resistance) tester for keeping track of the health of my LiPos. The tester would work by measuring cell voltage, with and without a load, to calculate the effective cell resistance. This is a measure of the battery quality, and also a way to monitor the health of the battery, by watching for cells going bad (resistance goes up when this happens).

At the time, 3S were the biggest batteries I was using, and so I designed my tester to work with up to 3-cell LiPos. The tester used an LCD display, and indicated ESR readings for all cells at once, along with overall pack ESR. By using cell ESR as well as Pack ESR, the cable/connector resistance could be computed, which is useful as well.

My original prototype got a lot of use, but it was bulky, as it was wired on a breadboard, using through-hole components. But it served its purpose, and there was nothing on the market that did what it did (multi-cell measurements at once).

More recently, I was exploring ways to make the design more compact, as well as to support up to 6-cell batteries. I designed a PCB this time. This allowed me to make the design a lot more compact, as well as to add the additional circuitry needed for 6-cell batteries.

ILS Approach for Arducopter (5 min 31 sec)

The recently released Version 3.2 of my GCS FlightZoomer (for ArduCopter) offers an automatic approach system, that is similar to the ILS for manned aviation. For plane it was working since last year but since copters can't just slip down the glideslope and then touch down with a lot of forward speed, the implemented procedure had to be changed as follows:

❶ At first, Copters will stay in GUIDED mode and will descend on the glideslope towards the runway.
❷ The moment, when an altitude of 7m above ground will be reached, the descend will stop and the copter will continue in level flight until the begin of the runway is reached.
❸ At that point, forward speed will be cut to zero, and the FlightZoomer autopilot will put the copter automatically in ArduCopter's LAND mode.
❹ The ArduCopter LAND mode will then simply perform a straight down descend.

As you can see in the examples in the video (towards the end), the whole procedure provides stunning results.

Some more bullet points about ILS approaches for copters:
  • As any number of runways and glideslopes can be defined upfront in the FlightZoomer navigation database, the airspace can be structured to support flexible flight operations in changing conditions (different for plane vs copter, have runways for different wind directions).
  • The final descend can start in a controlled manner at a rather high altitude. There is no need to for a long descend in LAND mode.
  • Solution picks up terms and procedures of manned aviation.
  • The procedure does hardly deviate from the solution for planes (the only difference is the short vertical descend right before touchdown).

Plan was to CG all 3 new planes starting with the F959 .

Unfortunately just after I was done with the F959 , there is a rain front moving in .


I was expecting all sorts of nasty things , but to my surprise the F959 flies like a bird .
There is one thing it wont do = Turn !
At the very slow chucking speed for CG testing , the rudder and elevator were super soft to non existent .
I did apply just the smallest amount of throttle , maybe 10% .
And the F959 actually flew in a straight line with so little power and maintained altitude . But that soft elevator rudder !
Obviously to get more authority , more speed is needed .
Now , how slow was I flying ? A fast human could easily outrun the F959 .. ( So slow )

Obviously with the F959 so soft on the controls I had to move the battery further back ..
To cut a long story short , I moved the battery almost all the way out from the space where it is supposed to go ..
And it was still soft on the controls , exhibiting no instability what so ever .

I dont know that I have ever come across a model with such a wide CG range .
But it did turn better for moving the battery at such slow speed .
I am going to have to velcro the battery so I can move it further back ..

Hmmmm , at 111 grams flying weight .. And the CG being able to be moved back ..
I wonder if I can pull 12 grams out of the nose ? and make the 959 a true sub 100 gram model !

I really wanted to CG the Ezio and Firstar today as well .. But I dont want to be caught in the rain .. So another time !

Spektrum technical recommends:

1. Start with a new model and not an existing model.
2. Bind it with the bind plug removed. Make sure receiver is blinking when you bind.
3. In System Setup Channel Assign assign a switch to turn SAFE on or off. Any switch can be used between channel 5-9. The gear channel is 5. If the gear is used for retracts then use channel 6 to activate switch B. I like to use Switch B because it’s the easiest to toggle on and off with the left forefinger pad. The middle position (1) can be set to On or Off.
4. Move both sticks to lower inside position. In the monitor screen make sure throttle, aileron, elevator, and rudder are showing plus or minus 100 percent.
5. Toggle switch B between stops (0 and 2) until you see a “twitch” in the elevator. Stop toggling when you see this and confirm the switch works by holding the model nose down and tail up. SAFE On should give you up elevator. Turning it off should give you neutral elevator. Put model into a bank. The upper wing aileron should raise trying to level the wing. If you don’t get this re toggle the switch again.
6 Once the switch is working you can name the model, select wing type (flaps), throttle, cut, rate switches, mix switches, and audio.
7. On first flight turn SAFE Off and trim the model at what ever minimum power is to maintain altitude (roughly 50 percent throttle) then land. If FM (flight modes) are used then trim for each flight mode such flaps up,...Continue Reading

Making my own wheels has been an interesting project. Using layers of balsa and basswood ply has been a challenge, but theirs texture looked like tread. The last part was building a "receptacle" into which they can fit inside the wings between #4 and #6 rib.

I've made my own plans on this. And except for pinching my thumb and later my palm with linesman's pliers working the 1/8" wire, it was relatively painless and full of good sanding effort.

The wheels were rattle can spray painted with Testor’s flat black and I used clear flat matte spray lacquer on the finished wheels for protection and durability. The hubs were dry brushed with Testor’s silver enamel. They were affixed with Gorilla Glue 5-min. Epoxy.

Affective May 24th 2019 the FAA suspended operations at the Apollo Field pending review of the local airspace and operating procedures.

Test Flight #3 - Ranger G2 with 8X4 Prop - Loops,Rolls, & Flaps Deployment ;-)

After performing the Motor Thrust Angle MOD on the Ranger G2 it gave me space for an 8x4 Prop.
I removed the stock 7x5 Prop to conduct some Test Flights with and 8x4 Prop.
This should produce significantly more thrust than the stock 7x5 Prop.
I have this plane trimmed out pretty well now ;-)
I have increase the Airleron from 100% Scale to 110% Scale to give a bit more Airleron authority.
I think I like that additional deflection on the Airlerons.
I also programmed some down Elevator with the Flaps to keep the plane from nosing up when Flaps are deployed.
Let's see if that helps.
So let's go do some Rolls, Loops, and Flap deployment ;-)

Silence ... ça tourne !!! Comme je vous en avais parlé récemment, j'avais craqué pour cet engin et l'ai commandé directement chez iFlight. Voici donc enfin ce fameux MEGABEE ... Un 3" inspiré du shendrone squirt v2 entièrement assemblé par iFlight .Bien conçu, costaud et des finitions très propres, ce petit racer vous permettra de faire des prises de vue tout en douceur, en mode stabilisé ou en acro, dans des endroits confinés en intérieur ou en extérieur, afin de réaliser de jolie cinématiques couplé à une bonne caméra (normalement prévu pour la Gopro 7 Black) .
