Oh Yea - Another chance to slope ,this was the third time I was able to get out on the hill this week
Once again at the top I found more wind , a steady 20 gusting over 30 mph to shake the rust off my trusty KA-8 .
I kept her up for around 20 minutes,the gusts were definitely flexing the wings
I popped the spoilers and walked her in during a lull in the gusts , no need to beat up an old favorite too bad.
Next up was the LEG ODR ,after some trimming {not sure why it was out of trim but its been a while since I last flew her } I was zooming back and forth close to the hill face {Kansas on my mind }
The wind kept vectoring west to north west then back west sometimes just a few degree's sometimes more - it kept it interesting
After about 45 minutes of fun my fingers were getting cold so I decided to head back down to the car.
A good week of flying {and climbing } has my legs and lungs ready for some rest and football tomorrow - GO BILLS !!

In 1928 Boeing was working on what would be the last generation of high performance military biplanes before the wave of monoplanes took over. Boeing’s entry into the fighter biplane market was the P-12 series. Built for both the Army Air Core and the Navy, there were many versions of the P-12 through its development. With Boeing trying to keep up with the monoplane phase, they modified one particular model of the P-12, the F4B-1 (last picture) to be a monoplane. Enter the Boeing XF5B-1 or XP-15. Finished in early 1930, the first airplane, (the XP-15) was essentially an XF4B-1 with the bottom wing knocked off, a new landing gear and modified ailerons. It was found to be unstable due to the vertical surface of the tail being too small. With an enlarged vertical surface, the XP-15 was presented to the US Army for testing. With a top speed of 190mph, it was no slouch in the speed department, but it was found to have a poor climb rate and a high landing speed so it was never purchased. A second airplane was completed, the XF5B-1, for presentation to the Navy and was ultimately purchased but a contract for more was never reached.

Powered by a 525hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340 and hauling the mail at 190mph, without even mentioning it’s fantastic looks, the XP-15 might have been the ultimate parasol.

Made this one as thin as possible, taking out all the artwork & using .8mm thick panels. Thickness is only limited by the switch size. Took out the temporary screws, which was a disaster. They need the temporary screws, even when the sticks appear to stay in place without them. An attempt at knurled areas was subjectively successful, if only because they created a widened part. A better solution might be hot glue or removable TPU caps. The button caps need more clearance. Lions tend to hit the power button when they go for the speed buttons, so that might have to be moved up or get some shrouds.

Got rid of the bulge, yet the extra length required is barely longer than a lion paw itself. It should be reprinted with the temporary screws before committing to soldering.

UMX TT signal loss (5 min 22 sec)

Re routing the antenna helped some ! But not enough !

So I have punched more holes in the TT and this time routed the antenna out the bottom of the fuse , maybe 1mm .

Range checking was good , at least double what I got before .

Butt ! @nd its a huge Bee Hive ! This antenna definitely seem to have a dead zone .. And that appears to be when it is directly pointed at the Tx .
Thats why I have it sticking vertically down .. Which does not eliminate the possibility of the dead zone ..

Last time , the prop did come lose ! Hence the funny sounding motor run .
That small cheap nasty self tapping screw seems to have stripped out the prop shaft .
So I had to replace it with a hex head screw . More butchery of the foam spinner , required .

Do I have to mod the antenna ?

Personally I really like 3 bladed head units and have done a number of custom builds on micros (K120, blade 130S, WL V950, blade 200 srx with both RKH short blade and Microheli 3 blade with my own long balde setup and upgrade motors as well as the factory Oxy 3 cubed and actively flying the 230S three blade unit on my upgraded AS355 scale bird also with 300x power. I also have Gaui X3 that's scheduled for the X3L - 3 blade conversion and tail stretch and 3 blade setup to go into my Tarot 450. So when Microheli advised they had a 3 blade DFC setup coming for the 450/330 this was a must have addition for me.

Microheli have provided me with a unit for technical evaluation and test flying and I thank them for the opportunity to review this product. I'll document the assembly (all very straight forward) and any FBL tuning - changes needed on the AR7200 beastX unit followed by flight test and reporting on y findings.

Enjoy the product photos whilst I get the unit assembled and then get the FBL settings checked over.

Microheli also have a full complement of spare parts amiable in support of this product with details now up on the Microheli website.

After initial unpacking and inspection I can advise the fit and finish on this product is totally stunning, the machining precision and finishing is superb ! I'm working through the various engineering details and will be reporting further on the design aspect of the assembly.

I had a lot of issues to get my ESC and motor running. After contacting the manufacturer of the ESC (Flier) I knew which firmware to flash (Boat_UV30 if you wondered). Now my motor is running but acting weirdly on low rpm.

bldc Motor rough start issue (0 min 36 sec)

Since it is a sensorless motor, it's obvious that the start won't be smooth. But I don't think it's supposed to be as rough as it is with mine!
I tried resoldering all joints, changing the motor timing, changing the motor speeds and more. I'm out of answers and couldn't find any other people having similar issues. Also I don't know how else to describe this issue than saying it's a "rough start".

Now I am not recommending anyone to do this with any of your models, especially if they are Electric Power. My situation is a little different because this Trojan model has crashed now several times and I had the opportunity to provide good protection to the ESC against moisture since I live in a very humid and swampy environment.

This weekend, most of Central Florida is Socked in with low Drizzle rain Clouds with DEAD CALM conditions that makes it all so tempting!

Micro Heli Pro Tail assembly for the Blade 450 X / 330 X / 330 S / 270 CFX / Fusion 270

Kiwi_Craig RC is setting up a blade 450 with both the new Micro Heli "pro" tail assembly and the new 3 blade DFC main rotor head. The Microheli team have been testing the heck out of these for the last few months fine tuning the geometric setups for the Pro tail and the 3 blade DFC head units. The parts have been provided to me to cary out a technical evaluation and independent test flying and I thank the Microheli team for this opportunity.

Starting off with the new "PRO" tail assembly, all I can can say is WOW, WOW and WOW, is a truely superbly made piece of gear, totally new design that does away with the forked clevis - bell crank and circular pitch slider "wheel" which is quite prone to wear and then results in mechanical slop. Similarly the blades plastic tail grips are prone to stretching and become floppy with laterally movement occurring. Combine the two and you get a standard tail assembly that is hard to keep working well as the flight hours roll up.

These clevis - bell crank type tails can be made to work exceptionally well, just look at the Gaui X3 and Oxy 2/3/4 helis. Microheli also does an upgrade for the various plastic parts in the standard assembly as well.

Watching this video got lions thinking about pendulum robots again.

Can A Self Balancing Vehicle Drive on a High Wire? (6 min 30 sec)

The problem is gyro stabilized robots have to be perfectly balanced or their gyro quickly saturates. They either need automatic weight shift or a way to precess. Pendulum robots accelerate in the direction of their center of gravity to stay upright. If they stay unbalanced, they'll keep accelerating until they run out of power & fall over.

The problem is pendulum robots are slow because they have to accelerate a lot of mass. When they move, they're either slowing a lot of mass down or speeding a lot of mass up to keep their CG centered, but never moving at a constant speed. Lions once considered fastening a quad copter to a pendulum robot to stabilize it. It would burn a lot of power, make a lot of noise, & take a lot of space. What about attaching a moment gyro to a pendulum robot to absorb the short term inertia, allowing it to travel much faster?

Moment gyros have been fastened to stationary pendulums but never to make a pendulum go real fast. This is a good example of the kind of system which could make an inverted pendulum go fast. Maybe a moment gyro could be used to make a legged robot cheaper & faster.

Just purchased a Dynaflite Fun Scale 81" Spitfire that seems complete except for plans and the manual. I have downloaded the plans but not the manual
the manual, question is are one or both available for purchase? Also any info as to when these were sold or discontinued would be greatly appreciated.

UMX Turbo Timber with Rudder Mix (5 min 3 sec)

I mixed in some rudder in stability mode to tighten the turns ..
From memory the mix is for 20% rudder added to the ailerons , and it really helps in tightening the turns .
I was thinking that the TT would be a nice tight space flier but in stability mode it's a little lazy with just bank and yank !
So mixing in a little rudder really helps kick the tail over . And with the TT having such excellent slow speed handling , kicking the tail does not hurt .
After a little over 4 minutes flight time , I had 53% battery when I came home .

The vertical performance is not brilliant and then again it's not terrible , maybe a little ho hum !
I will have to see about a 2 blade replacement prop .

Signal Warnings - I lowered the warning point / signal strength .. No joy there !

So today I came home and punched some holes in the side of the fuse and pulled the antenna thru !
Then tapped it to the outside of the fuse , just a bit of tail sticking out . ( pictured )
Tripled my range check . That's got to be nice

History of the Travel Air:
The History of the Travel Air is intertwined into quite a few of the major names in aviation history. Starting with Laird and Swallow, down the grape vine Travel Air was eventually associated with Curtiss-Wright, Cessna, Beechcraft and Stearman. But of course it couldn't be without an extremely convoluted history that one company could be associated with so many names. It all started in the early 1920s with Laird-Swallow. In the 1920s, barnstorming was in full swing and the market was hungry for more biplanes to rake in the cash with. Swallow was one of the early answers. With a single seat in the rear cockpit and room for two up front, the Swallow was a major step up from the Jennys and Standard J-1s that were surplussed from WWI. However, still having a wooden fuselage, it wasn't as tough or as long living as a barnstormer might want. Two employees of Swallow thought they had the answer to this with a welded steel fuselage. Lloyd Stearman and Walter Beech proposed their welded steel fuselage to the owner of Swallow aircraft to a surprising rejection. This sparked some controversy and ended with Stearman and Beech leaving Swallow to start their own company. Interestingly, this demonstration welded steel fuselage was actually turned into a completed airplane by the Winstead brothers (named the Winstead Special) which is still surviving and flying today.
