The title to this blog post is a quote from the Propbusters movie below… I agree…

These two movies are available on Amazon Prime and I recommend them both. RC Propbusters: Untold is an intimate look at modeling in Connecticut but it could be anywhere. It will have the most appeal to this group. Model Citizen is about model railroading and while that is not a focus of this group it says a lot of meaningful things about the importance of a hobby.

One of the things apparent in both films is that modeling is primarily an adult pursuit. I have felt for decades that the AMA has wasted a lot of resources trying to return to the halcyon days when model aviation was the rage among the youth of America. It’s proba why they went so gaga over multirotors. Those days aren’t coming back. Better they spend money advertising with AARP than what they have done. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be youth outreach, just that it shouldn’t be so consuming. It should be more along the lines of EAA’s Youmg Eagles program. There - Visible - Far from the primary emphasis.

RC Modeling may actually be suffering from this overemphasis on kids by making our hobby appear childish. This is a great hobby for adults. It is a great stress reliever. It keeps your fine motor skills going. It gets you outside away from the TV. It lets you participate in man’s greatest desire - to fly.

In 1080p 60fps - Here is the raw uncut footage of my 1-year old Freewing F-22 Raptor High Performance 4S 64mm EDF Jet.

Freewing F-22 Raptor High Performance 4S 64mm EDF Jet - Fun Flight (4 min 26 sec)

Purchased about a year ago through Motion RC, this was my first Freewing 64mm EDF Jet. Prior to this I had only been flying Eflite UMX EDF Jets, so this Freewing 4S 64mm EDF Raptor was my "stepping stone" into the 64mm EDF class. Since then I've been flying a variety of EDF Jets from the 50-70mm EDF class. However, I somehow let a year go by without getting at least one flight video of my Freewing F-22 Raptor HP 4S 64mm EDF Jet.. until now.

A year late, but here's a fun flight video from this past weekend. Hope you enjoy the show!

Powered by a Pulse 4S 2250mAh 45C lipo, weighing in at 243 grams. The CG was measured at 88mm from the leading edge of the wing at the root. Weight without lipo installed is 837 grams. Flight Timer was set to 3:40 minutes. Flown with a Spektrum DX8 G2 Transmitter and using a Lemon RX LM033 DSMX 7-Channel Stabilizer / Receiver.

Modifications from stock were minimal:
1) A double spray coating of Minwax Satin Polycrylic Finish over the entire airframe.
2) A foam brush-applied coating of JB-Weld 5-Minute Clear Epoxy over the leading edge trim of the air intakes (to create a hardened reinforced surface against frontal landing abrasion), followed with Polycrylic over the epoxy-coated...Continue Reading

Well , not much unfortunately ...

Mini Surfer 800 - Ready to maiden !
But - A cold front rolled in and we have wind and rain ..
A quick check of the weather say's Monday might be the only day to play
Every other day promises some very decent wind for those wind turbines ....

Bixler HLG Project
Was put on hold for the Mini Surfer 800
I got some more 4ch FS2A Rx , so soldered one up the other day ...
Goal is to get some servos working for the Rud / Ele
Oh by the way , I have gone with a all moving ele for this one ... ( Might be interesting )
Hopefully will have a flying Bixler HLG soon ...

The old Gearbox is churning for a new DLG !
Kind of thinking / leaning toward 800mm , and use one of the WLtoys 949 control boards ..
I was thinking Ail / Ele with a fixed vertical fin ...

Come on WLtoys , make a small DLG already ... Something a little larger than the UMX Whipit ( 700mm )
On the Whipit , still not available . Even though it was promised for April availability here in Oz ..
I have set aside $100 for a Stock-Whip .... ??????????????

Get it ????

Stockwhip ...

Plastic models help me study a plane that I hope to build someday. While investigating canard planes I tripped across the Macross DY-30 Chronos. It’s a transformer from PlayStation videogame only available in Japanese.

The plane is very close to modern jets. While evaluating a number of them I discovered the Russian SU-35/37 Super Flanker Jet. So I found the plastic model in China and bought it with no problems. I had to make lots of parts and trim the canards to match photos.

Here’s some photos of my version. The model will serve as a guide some day for a jet.

Hello all i recently upgraded my DYS xdr220 with a HGLRC f4proV6 aio board. The old board was a dinosaur compared to whats on the market today. I didnt want to break the bank or buy something that had a bunch of features i was not going to use.
The HGLRC f4proV6 board is a aio(all in one) meaning it has current sensor, filtered cam/vtx for best possible picture clearness. The board is 6S capable and will except up too 200A, thats a big wow!! The board out of the package came with antenna connector or extension, buzzer, and a cap which needs to be soldered on. The board layout is very easy to follow as it has two ports for wiring in your Rx a no brainer, and lights and buzzer if you want lights, the buzzer is a must. The vtx is integrated into the board and all you need to do is solder your camera's wires to the board and your in business. Soldering the esc's to the board is also a no brainer and i like the fact that you can solder the negativer or ground wires together on the same pad, as there is a single pad for the signal wire. It only took me 15 minutes to solder all wires to the board as they were already in place from when i removed the main dys aio board that came with the 220. I had to drill a hole in the top back of the canopy for the antenna extension cable to be mounted and it came out clean. I needed about 8 small nylon stand offs to mount the board to the frame and also to raise the canopy a little as i wanted plenty of air to flow over the board. I need to...Continue Reading

STM32F405 source code on GitHub:
Omnibus board used:
pros: • Good for development because of the broken out SWD pads, • faster processor clock at 168 MHz
cons: • Noisy switch mode step down converter which makes the gyro unusable at or above 3S

STM32F411 source code on GitHub:
NOXE board used:
pros: • good MP1584 step-down switching regulator
cons: • No SWD pads, • 100 MHz, but can easily do 8k loop

The firmware uses the Bayang protocol (• 8 digital aux channels, • 2 analog aux channels, • telemetry for battery voltage, packet count, PID tuning, • low latency 5 ms packet period, • autobind) via a SPI-connected XN297 or nRF24L01+ radio module.
