Watching this video got lions thinking about pendulum robots again.

Can A Self Balancing Vehicle Drive on a High Wire? (6 min 30 sec)


The problem is gyro stabilized robots have to be perfectly balanced or their gyro quickly saturates. They either need automatic weight shift or a way to precess. Pendulum robots accelerate in the direction of their center of gravity to stay upright. If they stay unbalanced, they'll keep accelerating until they run out of power & fall over.

The problem is pendulum robots are slow because they have to accelerate a lot of mass. When they move, they're either slowing a lot of mass down or speeding a lot of mass up to keep their CG centered, but never moving at a constant speed. Lions once considered fastening a quad copter to a pendulum robot to stabilize it. It would burn a lot of power, make a lot of noise, & take a lot of space. What about attaching a moment gyro to a pendulum robot to absorb the short term inertia, allowing it to travel much faster?

Moment gyros have been fastened to stationary pendulums but never to make a pendulum go real fast. This is a good example of the kind of system which could make an inverted pendulum go fast. Maybe a moment gyro could be used to make a legged robot cheaper & faster.

Just purchased a Dynaflite Fun Scale 81" Spitfire that seems complete except for plans and the manual. I have downloaded the plans but not the manual
the manual, question is are one or both available for purchase? Also any info as to when these were sold or discontinued would be greatly appreciated.

UMX Turbo Timber with Rudder Mix (5 min 3 sec)


I mixed in some rudder in stability mode to tighten the turns ..
From memory the mix is for 20% rudder added to the ailerons , and it really helps in tightening the turns .
I was thinking that the TT would be a nice tight space flier but in stability mode it's a little lazy with just bank and yank !
So mixing in a little rudder really helps kick the tail over . And with the TT having such excellent slow speed handling , kicking the tail does not hurt .
After a little over 4 minutes flight time , I had 53% battery when I came home .

The vertical performance is not brilliant and then again it's not terrible , maybe a little ho hum !
I will have to see about a 2 blade replacement prop .

Signal Warnings - I lowered the warning point / signal strength .. No joy there !

So today I came home and punched some holes in the side of the fuse and pulled the antenna thru !
Then tapped it to the outside of the fuse , just a bit of tail sticking out . ( pictured )
Tripled my range check . That's got to be nice

The History of the Travel Air is intertwined into quite a few of the major names in aviation history. Starting with Laird and Swallow, down the grape vine Travel Air was eventually associated with Curtiss-Wright, Cessna, Beechcraft and Stearman. But of course it couldn't be without an extremely convoluted history that one company could be associated with so many names. It all started in the early 1920s with Laird-Swallow. In the 1920s, barnstorming was in full swing and the market was hungry for more biplanes to rake in the cash with. Swallow was one of the early answers. With a single seat in the rear cockpit and room for two up front, the Swallow was a major step up from the Jennys and Standard J-1s that were surplussed from WWI. However, still having a wooden fuselage, it wasn't as tough or as long living as a barnstormer might want. Two employees of Swallow thought they had the answer to this with a welded steel fuselage. Lloyd Stearman and Walter Beech proposed their welded steel fuselage to the owner of Swallow aircraft to a surprising rejection. This sparked some controversy and ended with Stearman and Beech leaving Swallow to start their own company. Interestingly, this demonstration welded steel fuselage was actually turned into a completed airplane by the Winstead brothers (named the Winstead Special) which is still surviving and flying today. real solution is ‘Duh, don't stall
in the first place'.

My personal mental 5 Duh
Checklist
for deltas or flying
wings with elevons:

Duh 1. Keep plane at 1/2 throttle
cruise always (may vary slightly for
each power set up.

Duh 2. If climbing/banking (more than
about 30%) add some throttle first.

Duh 3. If totally cutting or reducing
throttle (landing approach) keep
nose below horizon so judged
'airspeed' is always above stall. Use
shallow banking turns, less than
30 degrees.

Duh 4. *** Never cut throttle and
attempt a steep turn from
'downwind leg' or 'base turn'
on landing approach, especially
with a tail wind.

OK, almost there,

Duh 5. Using some power
and with nose pointing
slightly down below the
horizon...aiming point is the
runway threshold...fly the
wing into 'ground effect'
a few feet above runway or
grass before cutting throttle
completely.

*** Note, Duh 4 is the biggest Duh
I usually see at the flying club ...
somebody thinks they are going
too fast on the down wind leg
with a tail wind, and chops
throttle and does a steep
panic 180 turn to land.

Duh, doing a panic 'throttle
chop and steep turn with a
tail wind’ is known as 'flying
your ground speed', not your
actual air speed.


Result is, Duh, stall and spin
to impact at low altitude.

After 28 years, my local HobbyTown USA will be closing towards the end of this month (1/30/21). It was a great place with great memories and a really good on-road racetrack. Rumor has it that NorCal Hobbies is interested in it but not sure if they will keep it a HobbyTown...probably not.

Yesterday I went down there to pick up 2 Traxxas Slash OBA kits and they gave me one of their Tamiya vinyl banners/posters! So I hung it in my garage just now and it sure looks great!!! The Tamiya Hornet was my first hobby grade RC so this made it extra special! Thanks for the memories and banner HobbyTown USA!!!

The speed paddles were finally enabled & debugged. Lions thought they would be rarely used, but in fact took to them like Americans take to socialism. They were quite easy to reach. Every downhill ended up getting a speed boost. Every uphill ended up with a speed cut. The run had a more consistent level of intensity & higher intensity than normal, but it wasn't the out of control variability that happens when a lion tries to pace himself. Having ground truth about the speed range would prevent the consequences of going too fast or going too slow to reap any benefit.


Lions previously figured running 6 miles at a constant speed set in the app was enough of an improvement over self pacing, but the ability to make minor adjustments with the flick of a paw could be a game changer. Lions still may end up lazy & go back to constant speed runs though.

Helas, the motors showed serious lack of torque without a payload while climbing the lion kingdom's steepest hill. The next step would be installing better connectors & wires.


Lions continue to ponder how to improve the paw controller. The desire for improvements didn't exist before 3D printing because improvements weren't possible. The steering lever could be smaller & closer to the rear. The steering lever needs knurls. The whole thing will probably stay dual thickness but get thinner. The way to make it thinner is to get rid of the isogrid & all the indented markings that are illegible anyway. It would just be a .8mm thick wall. It wouldn't look great, but it would be the most functional solution. Maybe it could get decals instead.

3D printed isogrids tend to look better than 3D printed flat surfaces. The dual thickness is a buster to model & manufacture, but greatly reduces the size. The mane trend making paw controllers easier to use over the years has been smaller size. It still makes it hard to seat on top of the charger.

I think I like it !

The climb out is amazing and I terminated the climb with a loop out , as otherwise it would have just kept going .. ( Unlimited Vertical ? )
It was spectacular .

My 2nd climb out was disrupted by the wind , as I wanted to do one with flaps deployed , but the wind just pushed the MT over into a loop . So yeah , got to the field just in time for the breeze to pick up . If only I had been 5 minutes earlier .

So , can I say - happy camper ? Motor and ESC swap have given me Power ! , weight has not increased a lot - Now 158 grams .
Flies like stock except for the crazy vertical performance .

I think I can live with the MT now .

This week I lightened my original Dart 250 to less than 250 gms. Final equipment:

AUW - 249.4 gms

The biggest step was dismantling my Strix 2S 3200 mah pack, which started at 101 gms. I switched from 16ga leads to 20 ga, shortened wires and dispensed with a lit of extra insulation and electrical tape. Final weight 94.1 g. I also traded the 16ga battery and ESC leads in my original Dart 250 for 20ga, traded my Matek F411-WING flight controller (12 g) for a Matek F411-WSE (8.5 g), switched from a VAS Minion vieo antenna to a TrueRC side-feed (shhort) antenna, cut out the carbon fiber crossbar in the Dart battery compartment, removed the black plastic bottom skids, eliminated the bullet connectors between the ESC and motor, and cut all the interior wiring as short as possible. I'd like to replace the Runcam Racer 3 with a Split 3 Micro for the HD onboard video recordings, but I don't see a way to keep under 250 gms with the 18650 pack. Or maybe... replace the T-Motor F20 II 1408 3250Kv and APC 4.1x4.1 prop with an Emax RS1306B 2700kv motor and HQprop Durable T5X3 prop, and replace the Aikon 35 amp ESC with an Emax Bullet Series 30 amp ESC. But that's another project when I have the parts.

Maiden flight was 40 minute, 25 seconds with plenty of racing around. It doesn't quite have enough power for a good loop on 2S. I can get to the top and turn, but it's just about out of steam when I do.

I have a Fatshark Trinity Headtracking module and connected it to my Radiomaster TX16s. Here's how:

As I wanted to use CH7 and CH8 for pan and tilt, those will be used as example in this mini tutorial.

To program your desired channels on the Trinity module:
Press the Trinity button when powering the module up and let go of the button directly after powering up. Then listen to the beeps to get to the preferred mode, confirm mode by pressing button, listen to beeps for correct setting, confirm setting by pressing button. See attachment.

On the Radiomaster:
Go to the input page and select the channels you're going to use for pan & tilt. As an input source, iv'e selected TR7 for pan, TR8 for tilt. (TR stands for TRainer port) See attachments.

On your receiver, connect the pan-servo to CH7 and the tilt-servo to CH8.

Connect the Trinity cable to the Radiomaster (3.5mm audio jack on top)
Power cycle all parts.

Press the button on the Trinity module, after one beep the tracker works. Thats all!
