Well it's the beginning of building season for me. Time to drag out the ideas and conjure up a model or 2 for next year. This year however is like no other for me though. This is a new leaf kind of building season. Originally I was going to sell off all my stuff, and go sub 250g to get away from much of the new rules as I could. I did succeed on the first part minus 3 sailplanes I held back. The second half I've changed my mind. I realized I hate restrictions and more so tiny aircraft. This means I'll have to get one of those modules before spring, but in the long run probably the only way to go.
Anyway so on to the build:
I've been eyeing up those Fat Fighter videos for a while and really wanted to try out one of my own. I'm picking the Warthog as my subject for many reasons. It's one of my favorite jets, it's soon to be out of service unfortunately, and it already looks goofy so a cartoon version will be a hoot. As you can see I'm just finishing up with the first stage which is designing. This will be made mainly from dollar tree foam with some balsa/ply in important areas. The stubby wings will give me 268 squares of area, and I'm hoping to keep the weight lower than 14oz. I'm going to use a couple drone motors with 4" props in the duct housings. That'll give plenty of power for hand launches. For now that's all I have. Tomorrow I'll go source some foamboard and get on sealing the paper. I've never build a ducted anything or a cartoon plane so this will be a fun experience.

A little background before we proceed:
So in the interest of convince and low free time I stopped making the trek to my flying club 45 minutes away. I sold all my birds(or planned to) and all the larger gear associated. The plan was to go with 1.5M ships below 250g and fly more locally at a couple unused public areas. That plan is still in effect, but a couple birds didn't sell. Because of that I've decided to do something fun with them. The subject here is the Chrysalis. Ill gwt to the Windsurfer 100 in the winter.
I have had a lot of gliders and always try to make them unique. This one has a fun color scheme already, but the front of the fuselage needs some fun added. It was line launched before, but in the new confines will need a motor. This is a fast looking glider, so why not make it look faster
The pure glider form had standard servos, 4oz battery pack, and 3 more oz of lead to make it balance. I want to use a 1300mah 3 cell lipo for this so the nose needed some length. This got me thinking why not give it a jet nose. Something exciting to stare at for 30 minutes or more at a time is always welcomed. I drew out an outline for a F-18 front end in the first picture. This could work!
Next was put the gutted fuselage on it to see how things will work. With a few alterations this is doable. It'll be a lot of shaped foam to keep it light, but possible. I'm currently designing the new fuselage sides that need added to the airframe, and how hatches will work. Hopefully I can start cutting balsa in a couple days.

Months back I came to the conclusion that sub 250g was the most logical route to migrate to. Less fuss, and much worrying about the latest and greatest regulations from the talking heads. That said I decided to start the sub 250 life with a XK A500 cartoon corsair. Upon receiving this crazy little bird, I noticed how much it resembles a bent wing GeeBee R2. Being a fan of both aircraft I think this is a good Mashup. OK so now to the flying part....I hate it STOCK.
The 3G/6G doesn't cooperate with how my thumbs want it to perform, very little elevator throw, and underpowered. The best solution is to gut it and start over. The adventure begins!

Disclaimer: This is an over the winer "build" so will be slow.

OK that said let's get into it. I picked this used yet complete RTF Cub for $3 at the local rehab store. I'll be totally honest I'm not a huge fan of foamies or Cubs, but couldn't say no for the price. So what to do with an antique foam 3 channel Cub? After a week of sitting on the situation, the idea of stripping it to nothing and making a crazy STOL plane came to mind. I do love taking airframes far out of their comfort zone. This is now a very interesting project to take up winter doldrums.

First step was today: strip it of everything. Everything was tossed out so to speak. I haven't handled a brushed 480 motor in a while and was shocked how heavy it is! With the gearbox it's a tank compared to what we are accustomed to now. This is a slightly good thing, as I have plans for up front that will weigh more than normal(more to come later). With one wingtip damaged the best solution was to clip the wings square. The plan is a more Kit Fox look anyway so this will be a good move in that direction. New tail feathers will also be part of that path.

The new wingspan is 40" The wing will be first focus as that's the important part after all. The mods will be:
Wingtip rakes, flaps, ailerons, carbon spar, and LE slats.
Let's end the post there and address changes as we go along.

I know a lot out there either started or at least have flown a GL in their rc journey. I'm one of those that learned to fly on one and thus it holds a soft spot. By the time it was retired there was more patches in the covering than original covering I used a Cox 049 to get it to thermalling height. Years later I built one of the updated laser cut versions and what a breeze that was! That one benefitted from an outrunner up front and a 1300 lipo. It ended up up being given to a friend that was learning to fly at the time.
Skip to the current day. I picked up a GL fuselage not long ago with a 049 bolted to the nose. It has no wing and the previous owner changed it to a cross dowel setup for the rubber bands. I plan to change it back the single center band setup and probably recover the fuselage. I still have the plans from the last one I built so I can use that to build a wing. The actual build will begin in a week or 2. Stay tuned....

As if I wasn't rebuilding a 2 meter sailplane, and trying to finish my Golden Age inspired racer already....I'm adding another project to the list. Luckily this should be less time consuming. Should.
I picked up this little 48" gem and some other goodies from an auction recently. I had the full size 72" RZ years ago and absolutely loved the hours of time I had on it. Eventually the wing got too bendy to trust and I used a Sig Riser 100 wing which actually worked perfectly. We're going to do something to that direction.
I also picked up a I'd say scratch built 56 wing with 1/2" more chord than the original so we're using that also.
The plan is to have 2 wings: the stock for windy days, and the longer wing for dead air slow cruising. I stripped both wings of their covering today to see what's going on underneath. The original will need some work as it has some we'll say flaws. The longer wing just needs tips added to match the look and probably 1/16" balsa in the center for the rubber bands.

Last year I made a more or less 2 meter Paragon. I say that because I took plans from a Pierce Arrow and scaled down Paragon to make the outline. The wing structure was nowhere near either design and was much thinner with more stringers. The airfoils are the typical AG progression and that part I'm happy with.
I flew it a handful of times and though it did ok I was never really happy with it so it sat in the basement.
This year in spring prep for flying season I want to fix that. I'm convinced this can be a great ship if I can tweek some issues. So that gets us to the current refit.
The issues to resolve are:
Doesn't turn well
Wing incidence needs adjusted
TE needed reinforced

The first step was to build a slightly larger rudder to help with turning. I finished that and have it mounted. I added shims to the fuselage where the LE sits. These are roughly where my field shims seemed to work well. That concludes the fuselage work. The wings are the subject of the rest of the work. I stripped the covering off which went well given it's only been on a year. The one outboard section of the TE got beat up during the covering removal. I had some from the build still so I replaced that. Now the polyhedral angle was far too low and that attributed to the poor turning. I decided make the wing a 6 panel setup to help. The last 3 bays of the outer panels are now removed and I'll put those back on at a 3 degree angle. I'm also removing the old style shaped block wingtips and making more modern ones. That's where I'm at currently, I'll add pics of the progress soon as this finishes up.
With all the deviations from the Paragon I can't call it a 2m Paragon so I'm changing the name to Majestic.

So a little pretext:
I've been sloooowly working on my current project since last July and will probably finish in a month or so. I've had long builds before, but nowhere near this long. Funny think is its only 51" WS. Life has just not given much building time in lately. I'm generally a power through a build kind of person, so it's been a struggle when the mind screams Finish It!
The build is a mash up of a handful of golden age air racers. Key aspects from 6 different racers were blended together during the design phase, and during the build also. The wing base came from a Sig 4 Star 20 kit along with the fuselage sides.
Today I sanded the fuselage and put the already covered wings on, what a wonderful feeling seeing the aircraft in my head coming to shape

This is still in design phase and may take a while to get going but here’s the general info
WS-118”
WA-1,135.56 sq in
Aspect ratio- 12.26
Weight- Probably not what I want
Wing loading- Same as above

Ideally I want to make a RES wing and full house wing, and both powered fuselage and winch ready one. How much of that happens I’m not sure but would like to make a powered res version at least. The remote id proposed rule has me on fence about making both wings and fuses... time will tell. Ok, onto the meat and potatoes I have the right res wing drawn out so far as you can see. Fuselage for power will be next with lengthened nose and tail plus bigger rudder. Stay tuned and Happy New Year!

I've been working on this mainly on the designing end for a month. I got some great advice on the "Where's the huge spirit thread" over on sailplane talk. Now I'm cutting wood for the fuselage.
The sides are mated up and drying right now with the front doubler in place. I will get a few pics of the fuse sides tomorrow. The upper and lower fuse parts are also cut. All that is left to fab up is the bulkheads then I can do some assembling

Well I suppose that enough people requested for them to bring the slowpoke back because I have a new kit here! Hopefully they bring the 40 size back too. Anyway to the build: I am on the road working right now so this one will be built on a 4' X 2' piece of fiber board I got at Menards. I bought the minimal tools needed to do the framing in my hotel room so this will be interesting. The plan is to make it a floater so the tail will be made from laminated contest grade balsa to keep the weight down in back. Luckily the LHS here has a HUGE stash of Sig contest grade sheets. I bought as many as I could afford to take home for future sailplane builds.
The setup will be a 25 size outrunner up front and probably a 4000mah 3 cell lipo. That should give me some pretty long flight times. The pics for the build will be taken with my phone so sorry in advance for the quality lol. The only other major deviation from stock I can think of will be changing the LG setup to an aluminum gear attached to the fuse in front of the wing.
