42" CF-100 Canuck, twin 64mm high output fans...Almost flight ready......down to push rods and control horns.....tested the fans, and my trepidation about not having enough thrust was unwarranted

Specs: 42" WS 65 oz all up, (2) Powerfun 12 blade 64 mm fans, 3500 kv, 65 A ZTW ESC's, 17gr metal gear digital servos, Lemon 6-ch DSMP receiver, (2) 2600 mah 50C 4S batteries, 102 oz thrust

F7U Cutlass Foamie

This thing is a @$%!#!# disaster .....I pinned it up to start checking fit.....in a word, it doesn't, except the wing and the fins....Put all the components in it and checked the weight...almost 6 lbs.......I don't have but 7 lbs of thrust at maximum output of the fans ......On top of that, I'd have to remove a major portion of the bottom of the fuse just to get enough air to the fans......I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead..better to have a disaster on the bench than an aircraft that would sit on the runway not moving, ever, or if it managed to take off, would be less than anemic in performance.......

I can salvage everything......

This morning's discovery !!!

I've had a mischief of a time applying paper to foam, without the paper wrinkling like 100 year old skin..sometimes it works, sometimes not so much...White glue, yellow glue, polycrylic, etc...So I asked my friend at the art supply store if he had anything that would stick paper to foam, and he handed me a jar of "Yes Paste".....It's thick, doesn't shrink, water cleanup, applies with a foam brush, and it doesn't make the paper wrinkle....period..the top sample is lightweight tracing paper, the bottom is plain ol' brown paper !

I don't know the cure time, but it has sufficient working time to reposition, and you can smooth it with your thumb

Revision....cure time seems to be about 30 minutes

More progress on the Cutlass....how the fuselage/nacelles will work.....Bottom nacelle, then the wing and fans, then the top nacelle, and finally the tail cone. Thrust tubes are Lenny's large drink cups. I cut the nacelle cross sections on my CNC machine out of 1" Formular and glued them together with M45, instead of cutting the nacelle in one piece with a hot wire...simply because I didn't have any 2" insulation, and the machine is way more accurate than I am

Hawker Tempest Mk-1 Foamie

Pleasant surprise this morning. I'd estimated the AUW to be 40 oz...I was wrong....Measured AUW is 34 oz...

Ran the prop calcs:

Wing loading is 18 oz.sq ft
Max level flight speed is 77 mph with a 9x6 APC E
Stall is 21 mph (She'll be a bit hot for landing)
Static Thrust is 48 oz (1.4:1.0 T/W) Should be an easy hand launch
Max watts is 322 W (151 W/lb)

I'm feeling pretty good about this build

weight of the hardware and components is 19 oz......
so the papered and painted airframe only weighs 15 oz....
I'd estimated 20-24.....that tells me that the hollow body design actually worked.....

Getting closer......balance seems to be good....a bit of touch up, some trim work, decals, push rods etc..adding two drop tanks to protect the aileron servo arms since she's a belly lander.....to be honest, she turned out better than I expected....we'll see how that KFm 3 (50%-25%) airfoil works....that's a 9x4 Xoar electric just for show.....probably put a 9x6 APC E for the maiden...but it's gonna have to warm up first.........

I got the airframe cut out this morning, with the exception of the firewall and servo/battery tray...won't take long....but I did something different this time...instead of cutting formers and bending/gluing the slabs onto them, I cut longitudinal sections that are keyed on both ends...then I'll make templates for the taper of both the fore and aft sections of the fuselage, and cut the tapers with a hot wire.

Plans are for a Cobra 2820/14 840 kV motor, 60 Amp ESC 2600mah 60C 4S

Fuselage is 1/2" rigid insulation....Wings and feathers are 3/16" Elmers board

This build is in preparation for a 60" - 66" balsa version with retracts....just want to make sure it'll fly before I start cutting balsa

Assembling the fuselage....with help....lol
I cut the hot wire templates for the hatch and the fore and aft tapers.....

Got the fuse tapered, radiused, and sanded, but I'm concerned about the surface area of the stab and elevator...
and the size of the fin....gonna do a little ciphering on tail volumes...they might end up a bit bigger than scale...

I'm happy with the progress on the brown paper covering.it helps a lot to wet both the paper and the foam....Captain Fantail aggrees

The original stab is on the left, the new one is on the right....roughly 10% bigger with the elevator extended to the ends..the fin was OK,
but I added the reverse curve...I got the tail volumes almost the same as a Ryan Navion.....Vv = 0....Continue Reading

Just finished this one....24" Einzpfeil with a PowerFun 64mm 11 blade fan 3500kv motor on 4S....Nacelle is a 16oz Chinet coffee cup...Holy St. Dilbert.....static thrust is unbelievable..3.2 lbs measured. I've got some 70mm fans that don't produce that much thrust...this thing is gonna be a bullet..... AUW is 30 oz.1.7:1.0 Thrust to Weight

Had a request for info on what I use for the leading edge on my foamies

I use faux Carbon Fiber tape, cut into 2" wide strips...available at most auto parts store (O'Reilly's, AutoZone, Advance)

Manufacturer claims this little fan will produce 1460 gr (3.2 lbs) of thrust......

In homage to Rusty-Gunn, I modified his original design (the Jimi Jetstream) to accept a 70mm EDF !
