XK A160 with slightly more forward CG (7 min 19 sec)

Battery sits deeper into the nose now + no slop .
Hunts less .
Rolls much nicer ! I mean it rolls like a Jam Roll !

New problem

Moving the CG ever so slightly forward ! Now I dont have enough elevator to hold the stall .
My A160 when it stalls - It just drops it's nose . Before the CG shift , the elevator could just - and I mean just - hold the nose up !
Now it cant . My control rod is flexing quite a bit _ Full Up ! So those foam hinges are limiting elevator movement .

Something else to fix .

Ok , looks like I have found an issue with the CG making the A160 a little touchy feely !

Looking inside the battery bay , there was a bump in the foam ( from the moulding ) ..
I got some steel wire , heated one end up ( red hot ) and melted away the bump / protrusion ..

Now the battery slips in further forward . But it's a real slop fit !
So I got some 3mm depron scrap and glued it to one side of the battery bay .
Now the battery is a non slop fit with just a small amount of friction grip .

And for the heck of it , a picture of my micro Rx and servos that replaced the flight control board .

A160 has been handled a lot - paint peeling ! Things needed fixing .....

XK A160 with more down thrust (7 min 43 sec)

I may have previously mentioned !
That I removed the motor+ mount and rotated it 180deg for more down thrust !

Because - When I applied power , the nose would lift and the A160 would climb seriously hard over 50% throttle ..
Up to 50% was ok but once I wanted more ( like 100% ) the A160 just lifted it's nose .

Rotating the motor mount seems to have seriously improved things . I did change my elevator setting causing the A160 to climb . I did put in some down trim , but looks like I have to go back where I was .. But never the less a serious improvement .

Having solved one issue , looks like CG might be next . It does hunt up and down a bit and drag it's beehive in turns ( signs of a rearward CG )
Oh well ! Not the end of the world ( like the death spiral ) . I will have to see if I can push / make room . for the battery further forward .

Playing with the CG

UMX Turbo Timber 2nd maiden (5 min 31 sec)

2nd Maiden .. No flaps and I turn the stability off .

I have my ailerons on triple rates - 50% - 75% and 100%

@ 50% general flying is fine , but there is not enough aileron to do rolls
@ 75% general flying is fine , but there is almost enough to do rolls
@ 100% general flying is fine , and there is enough to do rolls

I have 40% Expo across the board ... And if I wanted to throw the TT around I might drop that , maybe 10% expo @ 100% rates for a little more aileron snap !

No stability , flies like a plane without stability . So no more being lazy . It flew slow with no bad tendencies . And you dont need flaps to fly slow . The added benefit of flying less flaps is that there seems to be better battery life . ( Less drag / wasted energy )

Signal issues - Hmmm , better this time around ? Maybe my warning is just set too high ?
Not exactly like you can get to the flight board , cos the plane is glued shut .

UMX TT Signal Warning !

If anyone watched the video of my TT maiden ? They may have noticed I was getting a lot of signal warnings .
Even close up I was getting warnings . ( That telemetry thing )

I had to find a picture of the brick/flight control board to see where the antenna was as I could not see anything looking into the fuse . Armed with some intel I proceeded to use a control rod to coax the antenna into a better position . ( Pictured )

Previous to this the antenna was perfectly aligned with the flight control board sticking out into the back of the fuse . So at the right angles I was getting signal degradation .
Maybe the brick / motor / battery / wing etc were able to block the antenna because it was sticking perfectly straight out the back of the flight control board ? Anyways , I have ever so slightly re positioned the antenna for the next flight . So hopefully no more signal degradation !

UMX Turbo Timber Maiden (5 min 42 sec)

First let me thank the Universe for a really nice morning , everything was excellent , except for the humidity .

UMX Turbo Timber .

Everything was as per ( As it came out of the box )

OMPHobby 300mAh 2s Battery
Flying weight 122 grams
CG was 28mm
Flaps = Yes , entire flight was 1st position or Take off flaps
Stability mode = Yes , for the entire flight
Timer set for 4 minutes , I flew for 4.20 and when I got home had 50% battery
First flight was Low & Slow .... As slow as I could go ! Any slower and the TT would land ( Actually it did ) . I literally pushed slow hard !
I wanted to check for stall and battery consumption as well slow speed flight characteristics .

Flying the UMX TT @ 122 grams

It literally flew out of the box . I did nothing except set up basic functions . I dont even know if I need expo . It was just crazy stable with stability on and there was no stall characteristic of any kind with stability on . I flew so slow , backed of the power so much that the TT just landed . This was a very tentative first flight , maybe because this is for me a bit of a expensive plane .
With take off flaps and stability
If you live in the USA and dont have one of these ? I would have to ask why not ? Why dont you own a UMX TT ?
In other countries where a prop might cost you 10 to 20 bananas , I can understand reluctance .
Butt , and it's a huge but ! (...Continue Reading

Umx Turbo Timber bound and set up (2 min 9 sec)

It lives ...

Battery will be a 300mAh from OMPHobby T720 ..
Flying weight looks to be around 122 grams
Battery will make CG
Ailerons have - 50% / 75% / 100% rates
Elevator / Rudder have 100%
Expo is 40% for now . This may need to change .
Motor / Prop pulls 6 amps ... ( Will need to explore propeller options )

BIND ( To Taranis Qx7 with multi protocol module )

Tx = DSMx-22

I turned on the Tx and got it ready to bind .
Turned on the UMX TT
Once the TT had beeped and thrown the control surfaces around some and STOPED !
I then activated the bind in the Tx ..
5 Seconds or so later the Tx was bound to the TT ..

CH5 is for flying modes ( Stability or not ) = You may need to reverse the Ch to get the mode you want for switch position
CH6 is for the Flaps - I slowed mine down 0.5 seconds up and down .
I did need to reverse my rudder ..

And here we are ! TT is back in the box and Tx is set up , battery is charged . Just need for the weather to co operate - Which might be next week ?
We are having a bit of a wintery summer so far ..
Cool / wet and windy !
I dont mind the cool , I dont mind the wet , but the wind can take a hike !

Whats to worry about ?

Well , whats to worry about is reverse polarity ...
The UMX Whipit - the batteries are reverse polarity when compared to other batteries used in drones ..
Look the same / same size / capacity etc .. Only the whip has reverse +- .. ( So you cant use cheap generic batteries perhaps ? )
This in my opinion is dirty pool !

Why reverse the battery plug except to shaft the end user ?

So next I have to plug in a 2s battery and see what happens !

It is a little worrisome !

Ooooh ! Stupid proprietary battery plug ! Seriously ?
What is this , the dark ages ?

And of course the wires are crazy short , making re plugging a PITA !
Seriously Horizon , way to push buyers remorse !
I mean , 2020 / 2021 and who wants to make life easy ?

That 3 bladed prop is crazy expensive . - Going to have to find a SANE ($) replacement ASAP !
Who the hell wants to pay $20 to $40 Aus for a plastic prop that costs maybe 10c to manufacture .
The more I find , less there is to like !
This plane might be ok in the USA , but here in Oz it just seems like a RIP in the wallet !
I am keeping the box , I might sell this in the near future .

That is a really small motor in the UMX TT
Question ? Spinner/nose cone - How do you remove it ? ( Is it glued in place ? ) Do you need to damage it to remove it ?
My UMX TT looks to just come in a hairs breath under 105 grams out of the box .
C of G is supposed to be 28mm , which looks to be just behind the carbon spar . ( On the underside of the wing )
I have some 300mAh 2s batteries and the TT looks like it uses the balance plug for juice .

Oh dear! Looks like the foam spinner is glued . I did want to bench the prop and compare it to some 2 blade's .
Usually 2 blade props outperform 3 blade props , at least in this size .

And I did want to remove the prop as some binds have a throttle issue ( needs channel reversing ) .
I dont want to FUBAR the foam spinner !

How do I feel opening the box ?
So far seems ok , the wires at the tips ( nav lights ) , yeah = Could have been done better !
Do I have to bore a hole thru the spinner to remove the prop ?
In Australia = Very Expensive ! But this is my Last Years Birthday Present ! ( But still expensive ) I really did want one ( expensive ) .
Can I get past the Cost ? Will have to wait and see on that one ....Continue Reading

Something came in the mail .

Now at first , the plain brown box ! Was so big I thought some one had ordered an air-conditioner or something .

It was only when I saw the Hobby trade logo on the box I realized it was the UMX Turbo T

That's when I remembered that the Turbo T comes fully assembled .

It be wet and windy right now with a weather prediction of more wet and windy in the days to come !

Might have to download the user manual and do some reading !

7 30am Jan1 2021 OMP S720 (5 min 41 sec)

Brutal steamy / humid / fly infested Jan1 2021 morning .

But I did get to RC ... ( Thats got to be nice )

Unfortunately , some people left their fireworks rubbish behind ...

Is it that hard to walk 10 meters and throw your trash in the rubbish bins ? ( Obviously it is ! )

It's New Years Ever here in Oz , Tomorrow is 2021 for us Down Under !
So wishing planet Earth a much safer - happier - healthier - etc , year in 2021 .
2020 was certainly a year most would like to put behind them .

I purchased the UMX Turbo Timber as it was finally in stock here in Oz . Probably get it some time 2021
This is the micro plane I have wanted for some time ( always out of stock ) .

Only one thing on my to buy list , one of those Multi protocol transmitters ( as opposed to modules ) .
Maybe for my Birthday ?

Hmmm ,

Ok , mine flies real nice except for one thing ..
it climbs / lifts it's nose under power .. The more power , the more it lifts the nose .

I am already flying with visible down elevator which is fine to about 50% throttle and after that it climbs under power .

The cure ? More motor down thrust maybe .

So with all the wind outside it's time to do some hanger stuff !

Cowl came off , I unscrewed the motor and flipped it 180deg .. Looks like , more down thrust ! Or is it an optical illusion ?

Oh well , I will find out next time I fly it .

My little brushed project is ready for control horns ...
Should be flying 2021

Micro Tundra gets a new flap servo (3 min 58 sec)

It's in and looks to be working ok .
Posted by old4570 | Dec 25, 2020 @ 07:22 PM | 8,819 Views
I ordered 2 OMPHobby servos for the S720 / T720 , because they look the closest to the MT servos .
+ Hobby King does not sell spares for the MT , so ?

Check out that failed servo ! What Bee Hive @ Durafly decided to put a faulty / damaged servo in my MT ? I sure as hell didn't melt it .
Thats a melted servo . ( The way it came - I noticed during assembly that it looked a little NQR )
It worked for a while but then died ! ( Thats a flap servo )

Some one decided to make changing servos a real PITA ! I ordered two servos cos I thought I may need to change both ( resolution and all that ) , but it looks like the servos might be same-o same-o .

What a PITA !
Looks like I will need to do some soldering !

Not happy Jan ( or in this case Durafly )

1 Day till Christmas ( Xmas for some )

A) Found 2 3s batteries in my collection . The smaller one is XT30 , but I have some XT30 to XT60 adapters somewhere .

B) My little fun depron project is one the way . Laminated 2 3mm sheets and then I will sand and shape and probably use the laminating film . Hmm , hopefully flying by 2021 .. Cool and rainy today .
Washing machine is screaming . I got up at 6.45am to vacuum and mop
Well , at least the floor is clean .

That washing machine !!!

Merry Christmas RCG ! Be safe and healthy for 2021 .

Prime Jet Pro less the canard (2 min 27 sec)

Yes , I cut the canard off !

I was on the Oracle ( Youtube ) , and I saw a video where the poster said all his PJP problems were because of the canard . And removing said problem fixed his PJP and it flew nice after that .

Now a little while ago I played with mine and it was a dog . Simply could not trim it .
So a few days ago I cut the canard off and took it out again this morning and ..........

Well , it needs up elevator trim . And I really think it's a little nose heavy . It's super stable and landing needs all the up elevator there is .
Hopefully I can trim it now for CG without the canard messing things up .

Also , it lacks power . 2s is not cutting it . A CG change might help in that regard , but I was at 75% to 100% throttle range .. Which is a little high for comfort and I would say that the only direction to go in that regard is 3s .
Heck , do I even have a small 3s battery ?

XK A430 Sunday Morning (6 min 52 sec)

What a glorious Wind Free Morning
Yes , another early start !

XK A430 , so glad I re set the Expo to 85% from 75% .. I was just able to handle the 430 in 3D mode .
The roll axis is very sensitive , even @ 35% rates - 85% Expo ..
But I was able to have a little fun . Still overly sensitive on the roll axis though .
I am going to have to move the control rods to the outermost Control horn holes . To reduce throws the analogue way .
If you can get control of the roll axis , I think the XK A430 is going to be fantastic .

Watching a few Xk A430 crashes , it looks like a lot of people are rolling the 430 into the ground in 3D mode . ( I know I did )

TIP's = Move all the control rods to the outermost control horn hole ! Especially for the factory Tx .
If you hobby grade Tx the 430 , start with at least 50/50 rates expo ( Minimum ) And in 3D be prepared to go even more extreme to tame the roll axis .
Also start 3D with lots of distance between the model and terrible firmness . So you have plenty of time to switch to 6G mode .
Trim the model VIA analogue methods if it does not fly level .. For me digital did little to nothing .

5 Days till Christmas ( Xmas for some )
