Today I submitted Harley Michaelis’ name to the AMA’s Hall of Fame review group. My nomination gave them seven pages including a cover page, their nomination form, biography, achievements, testimonials, links to articles and videos, and a page of photos.

It was good to review my past year interacting with Harley. He died October 12, 2020 and his ashes were buried next to Patricia in Walla Walla, Wash.

Harley was 99 years old and had outlived so many that he had trained, competed against, and inspired. He had become a Christian two years after marrying Patricia and lived out his faith.

He deserved this nomination. I’m glad to have made a long overdue nomination.

The easiest way to drive sensored, direct drive motors is to drop in an e-bike motor driver. Those are much cheaper than hobby ESC's in price per watt, but they're gigantic & manely require over 24V. They also require 3 hall effect sensors instead of 2, sensing the actual rotor. They might be shrinkable by taking out the guts. This is quite an improvement over 10 years ago when there were no e-bikes & large motor controllers would have all been super expensive.

Given the limitations, the next option is hacking hobby ESC's. The supersimples from 15 years ago are rated for 35A but always burned out above 5A. Full power requires current & voltage to be in phase, but they're worth trying. They have no hardware UART exposed. Lions 4 years ago wrote ESC firmware with a software UART driver for debugging at 9600 baud. It's always depressing to reuse ancient code because it shows how clueless you currently are about something you found easy long ago.


The plan is to send commands through high speed SPI & have them both on the same bus. Programming them requires unplugging the STM32 & plugging in the arduino. The exact wiring for the least amount of unplugging is a problem. It almost makes sense to make a bootloader program them over 9600 baud UART, but lions expect them to quickly burn out & be replaced by a home made motor driver.


At least a mockup of the existing pieces revealed a lot of empty space. The glued corners are truly a mess.

UMX Turbo Timber Maiden (5 min 42 sec)

First let me thank the Universe for a really nice morning , everything was excellent , except for the humidity .


UMX Turbo Timber .

Everything was as per ( As it came out of the box )

Flaps = Yes , entire flight was 1st position or Take off flaps
Stability mode = Yes , for the entire flight
Timer set for 4 minutes , I flew for 4.20 and when I got home had 50% battery
First flight was Low & Slow .... As slow as I could go ! Any slower and the TT would land ( Actually it did ) . I literally pushed slow hard !
I wanted to check for stall and battery consumption as well slow speed flight characteristics .

Flying the UMX TT @ 122 grams

It literally flew out of the box . I did nothing except set up basic functions . I dont even know if I need expo . It was just crazy stable with stability on and there was no stall characteristic of any kind with stability on . I flew so slow , backed of the power so much that the TT just landed . This was a very tentative first flight , maybe because this is for me a bit of a expensive plane .
With take off flaps and stability
If you live in the USA and dont have one of these ? I would have to ask why not ? Why dont you own a UMX TT ?
In other countries where a prop might cost you 10 to 20 bananas , I can understand reluctance .

She earned her wings today!

Dynasoar Rocketry Space Shuttle R/C rocket glider flights (5 min 8 sec)

Saving the balsa colored stuff for later, I notice a post suggesting a simple mix for making a sanding sealer work around
with a 50-50 white glue and water mixture.

The sample part coated dried to a pretty smmoooth a bit harder surface finish, I like it.
I suspect regard for heat when using film covering should be considered, perhaps it could be an issue, perhaps not.

Another incremental improvement. It needs a piece spreading the struts on top, but is otherwise useful. It currently uses a bend in the wheel forks to adjust height. It would be stronger if the wheel forks were straight & it adjusted the strut height, with the struts having a spreader on top. This reduces ground clearance, though.

The rod ends split if they're tightened with a socket wrench. They have to be tightened with pliers.

The battery compartment could have more ground clearance if it had bends like the steering section. This would require gluing a lot more pieces.

After ordering another $40 of PLA, it became clear that perfection really requires a way to recycle PLA. Every model is otherwise going to end 90% of the way there.

The method described here applies to the Eflite Conscendo motorglider but can be used for other motorgliders.
When the stock canopy can’t be replaced or interferes with batteries and other components the plastic canopy is an alternative.

Start with an empty 2 liter soft drink bottle. The tinted green plastic showers the outline of a scale canopy and the tint filters much of the sunlight from fading the interior components.

The bottle has a vertical seam and label that should be avoided. The vertical seam can be used to measure a centerline of one or two canopies. The template plan shows dimensions for the Conscendo canopy. Use a Sharpie permanent marker and start by putting a mark 23 mm away from the bottom horizontal seam. The permanent ink is easily removed later with alcohol later. This initial mark is where the paper template can be taped in place along with small pieces of tape on the side of the paper template. The photo shows 2 canopy outlines on the bottle before they are cut out. The initial cut does not have to be exact as the canopy side edges should be cut with a straight edge and an Exacto #11 blade or a box cutter. The straight edges will be lined up along the decals and act as a straight hinge line with clear book tape. The inside of the canopy gets taped as well. The clear tape is used to make a band that slides aft and forces the canopy tight against the fuselage top and sides. After the canopy is hinged measure the circumference if the canopy and fuselage about halfway back. Pull out a piece of tape a little longer than the circumference and wrap it around the canopy with the sticky side out. This inner band will be covered with a second layer of tape on the outside. The outside band should be about half the width of the inner band. This will allow the band to be slid forward and away from the fuselage for final trimming with scissors. The band can be any width. I used scissors to cut a band about 1/2 inch wide.

Got to the RC Club field exactly at 8:43am and no one around. Call Bill M. and he told me that there were 10 cars but, apparently they left pretty early. (Too Cold for these guys! LOL!)

I flew my now favorite RC airplane model known as the Hangar9 P-51D Mustang RED TAIL PTS and it flew for almost seven (7) minutes right at 1/2 throttle and the 4-cell still registered 15.63 Volts from a fully charge state of 16.78 Volts! Which means that after flying the model, each cell still had 3.9 Volts and duration could have been longer!

Earlier yesterday, I had an opportunity to finally install the wheel strut covers and had to adjust the right strut some with shim material (prop spacer) to make the right strut perfectly 90 degree to the wing surface when main gear is Down. This allowed the wheel and strut to tuck in the same amount to the Left wheel and strut.

The wheel - strut covers were left ample space at the bottom (without any attachment) in case the model landed hard and strut spring would depress on landing as all will happen is the bottom end of the wheel - strut cover will move outward without damage as soon as it makes contact to rubber tire.

Well, the landing was a kiss the ground and no issues!

I Love this model and can’t understand why it was discontinued.��
