Ok - here we are again and now the snow is gone,a light mist with temps in the mid 30's
The forecast originally predicted 11 to 12 mph from the west,I was pleasantly surprised to find it had turned NW
I had not tried flying our hill with the speeds so low but I am aiming at flying once a week if anything close to flyable presents itself

I have a Alcyone - a 3m thermal ship from the 90's that I had not maidened yet so I brought it out
Actual measured wind at the top was between 8 and 15
Launch was a non event , it flew great and tooled around at a pretty good clip for around 15 to 20 minute by which time my right hand was getting really cold ,burning ,I only had put on a light cloth glove so I didn't have a problem launching,once they got damp they were cold.
This has Huge flaps so I cranked them down and fed in down elevator {I did not have any mix programmed yet, This full house stuff is new to me }
Of course the wind/lift picked up ...it didn't want to come down , made 3 or 4 full circuits of the hill with full flaps ,when I flattened it out it went up ,if i pushed more down it picked up speed - it would have been more fun if my hand didn't hurt so bad
The next pass I cam in low on the hill and did a mini pop up to kill the speed and let it back up the hill and then a slight push to settle her in.
Success
I guess I will see if mixing in some spoiler {up Aileron }will add enough drag to kill the forward momentum better.

Maybe I will get some sunshine on my next outing

Wind again from the right direction
forecast called for 15/16 mph and ramping down
When I got to the top at 2:30 I found steady 28 with pulsing sustained gust in the mid 30's
If I had know I would have brought heavier ships..
I flew my 30"12 oz Sizzle for 45 minutes - a amazing little wing ! see {https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...16-GEMS-Sizzle }
I had snow squalls blowing over that limited visibility ,really had to concentrate to keep it in site and not get blown over the back
Next I put my Parkzone Ka -8 up , the wind had subsided to the mid to high 20's most of the time ,blasted around with it for the next 45 or so minutes
When it started to get dark I landed and headed home - a Great way to end the day

The wings are joined ,spackled and ready for the top hinge linkage , then glass the center section
The fuse has been spackled ,sanded , is ready for the elevator control snake
I plan to make the wing a bolt on with 2 - 1/4/20 plastic bolts
I need to do a rough balance ,and see what the plastic tails cost me in added weight
I am leaning toward balsa a tail group if I find I have some 3/16 laying around
I checked and do not have a plastic p-51 canopy that will fit ,let's see how the shaping of the epp one goes

How I love November in New York State ,
15 degrees and 6 inches of snow last week ,40 degrees today with all the snow gone BUT flyable wind both weeks Yea!!

With wind coming right up the hill , I brought out my ships that had last flown in Wilson KS last spring at their challenge event

First up my old trusty Knife Edge wing.
It had sustained some damage in the last combat event :nothing a little white GG couldn't handle....but would it still fly the same
Oh Yea its still got it ,turning and burning ,paper clip turns - a great wing

Next: My new Dan Wing 2, I had only flown it once in Kansas and wanted to get some time on it.
It is much lighter but penetrates well, good speed but if the wind gets it turned into the slope with no energy it becomes a "paper plate"....
it might be just a tad tail heavy,I kept adding down trim which helped but the conditions through it around a lot

Next : My ODR from G.E.M.S
I had flown it last year and was not overly impressed with it.
I took it to KS to race the ODR class and could not keep it in the air on race day air ,as a last ditch effort I added about 1/16 of down ailerons {camber} and it became a different plane...was really interested to see how it would fly here at home
It flew Great, Fast handled the gusts and the lulls ,close on the slope or doing pumps out in front of the hill
I flew it for a hour {my hands were getting pretty cold and stiff} I fly a 700ma LiFe pak in it and wondered how much I had left in the pak
I just topped it off and it only used 126 ma ...I guess i could have flown for 6 more hours

The long range forecast is for more storm fronts moving through next week ....I could get used to flying once a week

the forecast is for 22 mph straight up our hill with possible gusts over 50 ,that should be over 30 mph sustained , measured at the top if past experience still holds r

With the long lay off of slope flying and other demands/priorities in my life I have found it hard to get back to the building board this past summer .

Summer is long past and winter is now upon us here in upstate N.Y. - and now the wind returns...
After getting out on the slope today i find myself eager to get back on unfinished projects and also start some new ones .
So ...
Here is the start of my DAW P-51 build {a quick build I hope}

1st step glue the basswood spars into the precut channel using white {foaming } Gorilla glue
Once dry glue the trailing edges on {I used 20 min epoxy}

This is the original DAW kit which used coraplast tails and full size servos {40 oz Futaba S-148}
I am still undecided weather to do the tail feathers out of balsa and cover for a better look or just go with the stock coroplast set up and finish it sooner
then go out and fly the snot out of it like most of the world has done up to now ...

next up - trim/sand the top or the spars and trailing edges and prepare to join the wing halfs

Well finally got a chance to get out on the slope here in NY for some sloping.
I had missed 2 other chances when the conditions were better with the NW wind coming straight up the hill but 36 years of marriage have taught me
"Never miss taking your Wife out for her birthday "
Anyway : I have not been out on the slope since Wilson last spring so trying a West wind thru the hedgerow and across the face of the hill was worth a try...I Really Need a Fix

The Ka-8 let me down with no working ailerons so it was time to give the Demon a shot ,a gift from a friend I had only put one flight on it over flat land .

We are back from our Midwest Slope adventure 2867 miles later.
We left Wilson at 6:00am Sunday after topping off on coffee at the K-18 Cafe ( they let us in before they open to help us get on the road early ) and arriving back home on my door step at 5:00 am Monday .

After putting the Knife Edge aside for a bit,
I picked her back up and after a bit of Foam Tack ,White Gorilla glue and a little strapping tape.
She is ready to rumble

Monday 4/15 dawns with the promise of 20 mph straight up the hill with light rain clearing off by 4:00
As I drove out there were still some sprinkles on the wind shield so I took my time and waited at the bottom of the hill till they were gone.
Once at the top the wind was 22 mph with gusts up to 30
I had brought out my combat wings {a 26 oz Knife Edge and a lighter wide body KE} perfect conditions to do a check out flight before the upcoming Glider Games in Cleveland in 2 weeks and a week later out to Wilson Kansas for "Wings over Wilson".

I launched with no problem and was trimming out the down elevator that I had put in when i was last out with it in 40 mph wind .
About 2 minute into the flight my hat blew off my head and I started backing up the hill to try and get to it before it went over the top,
I turned to take one more big step to get it and the next thing I know i am on my face ... yup dirt nap both me and the plane
I got back on my feet and hobbled my way down to the base of the hill{mild sprain of my ankle} where it went in,as i got closer i could see it was hurt pretty bad-
I climbed back up to the top and switched to the lighter wide body Knife Edge,with great flying conditions I was not going to quit.
Flew for about 5 min,the wind had built up some more with higher gusts at times ,the wide body was doing ok even though it doesn't penetrate as well as my 26 oz that i just ripped in half .

I got stalled by a really big gust and landed about 1/4 way down the hill but before i could get to it another gust picked it up and got it flipping end over end to the top of the hill where it took a even bigger hop and wound 20 feet up in the top of a tree.
by the time I got it out of the tree it also was beat up and minus both tiplets.

Hows that song go "Daddy said there'd be days like this ... "

I got out for a couple of hours of flying after work today.
I was not sure if the wind direction would be flyable as they were calling for a west wind which blows through a tree line and is crossed ..but 25 to 30 mph was calling me
I brought out a Bob Martin Coyote 54 oz
and a 2 M T-Tail that I think is a Gerry 53 oz
I put the Coyote up first and flew for around 40 min, I had not put my gloves on because I was not sure if I could launch it with my left had with a glove on... besides the temps were in the mid 40's,I flew a lot colder that this this past winter
The launch was no problem but by the time I landed my fingers were hurting pretty good {must be getting old}

It took at least 10 minuets of swinging my arms to get my hands warm again and it was time for "Gerry", by this time the wind had picked up to over 30's with gusts around 40 mph trying to rip the plane out of my hands.
I had to sit down on the slope face in front of the plane for at least 5 minute before I got a lull to launch in..it was worth it
The lift was brutal but a blast with some huge pumps and at other times the wind just stopping it as the direction changed to south and then back to west - {North Easter weather at its best}
