He did this last month. Proud of this guy. Practiced hard with RealFlight and a Hobby Zone Champ. This is a mashed-up Apprentice from different versions. NO stabilizer. Handled it very well.

My son, Austin, received an Apprentice ARF from our club president. The plane was in several pieces with spare parts included. The fuselage is the "SAFE" version but we're flying it "old school RX" (no stabilization).

We had to get creative with a few missing parts but everything is in place and ready to go. Winds are pretty high right now so he'll have to wait another day or two before we can maiden it.

This is a MUCH better looking plane than my first kit.

Bomber Field; Monaville, Texas. Thursday, Sept. 19th, 2013

We had fair weather most of the day yesterday. There was a 20 minute shower in the afternoon but we got right back into the air. Unfortunately, we are washed out today and the tomorrow has a 70% chance of thunderstorms.

I'm hoping I can get back out to the field in the morning and catch up with a few buddies before the field turns into a mud pit.

I am really looking forward to this one. How about you?

Let's hope Great Planes buys marketing rights from Disney and sells a couple of these as electric kits. Heck, maybe even an add-on DVD to RealFlight 6.5!

Just a handful of the ones that caught my eye. Great day for an airshow. A little breezy but the sky was blue and the temps very comfortable....Continue Reading

I've started a build log for my new garage workshop here:

Read several threads here on RC Groups to get tips and suggestions for my new building area. Looking forward to the final product next year.

Feel free to add your ideas or comments.

Was able to get down to Ellington International Airport today to see Space Shuttle Endeavour before California takes ownership. Beautiful piece of human engineering. So glad my two young boys got the chance to see her up close.

Here is a new video I put together for Mike Laible & Herman Burton of their beautiful giant scale B-24 Liberator. This is the bomber's maiden flight flown over at Houston's Johnson Space Center RC Club.

Nice plane & flight fellas!

This has been hanging up on the ceiling in my son's room for nearly 4 years. Before that, sitting on a shelf in the garage. Hasn't flown in 10 years. Both sons told me it was time to dust it off and give it some air time.

I love(d) this plane. This one is my third Starfire 40. Tower Hobbies made a lot of money off of me. First two flew great until I pushed them over the edge. Got this one tweaked just right and flew it for many years, as-is...until I got into electric. Since then, my glow fuel planes have been idle for quite some time. I still own three, one of them running my father's Saito 45 4-cycle that purrs like a kitten. Hmmm...maybe I should dust that one off too!

Good news...engine wasn't seized. Poured some After Run oil into the MDS .48 and it turns over nicely. Gonna let it sit for today and start working on it tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Here are some pics. The one of me and this Starfire 40 was on its first flight back in the 90's. The rest were taken a little while ago after getting it off the ceiling (hanging wheels up).

My 'man cave' in the garage. Wife finally gave me permission to take over the other side. Moved my tool boxes over and put in a temporary table to finish a few planes. In the next few months, I'll buy a small shed to move the 'crap' out and install a nice building table in the middle. I doubt my wife will ever see me again once it's completed.

...now where do I put the flat screen, the couch, and the George Foreman grill?

Picked this up for my birthday last month. Wasn't a big fan of the blue stickers that came with it so I painted up a new scheme. Very happy with how it turned out. Now I've got to finish up the electronics and get her in the air!!

Started out flying gliders in the early 80's. Added glow powered planes shortly afterward. Kept flying both types until I began the "electric" path about 8 years ago. Now most of the stuff I fly is electric (some converted from glow) but something has been missing.

...until now.

I was given a gas trimmer a while back that has sat quietly in my garage. I was about to put it on Craigslist until a little voice went off in my head (okay, LOUD voice) saying I should consider building a large scale gas powered aircraft.

Long story short...I've gone from "trimmer" to "engine" in only a few days. Time to add the RC components (prop adapter, mount) and find me a 1/4 scale plane to strap it on. Hoping someone in Houston has a Piper Cub they need to unload real cheap.

I took a ton of photos last Sunday during "Wings Over Houston". It'll take me another day or two to process them all but here are a few that I really liked.

Had a great time last Friday taking some video (and flying) at the annual B-17 & Scale Big Bird Fly-In over in Monaville, Texas. Here's a little montage I whipped up for everyone. Enjoy!

Got a close-up shot of a large B-17 crashing at Bomber Field (Monaville, TX) yesterday. Not a pretty sight.

On the plus side...I also got a ton of footage of 'good' flying. I'll try to whip up a sampler for you all shortly.

Promised my buddy (a year ago) to build his 6' Glow Dog in exchange for a GP Evader. He's waited long enough.

Keith's original build thread is here. When mine is completed, I'll post the final pics to his thread.

Keith has created a nice short kit. The plans and pre-cut pieces are first class. Is this for a beginner? Probably not. I've been building kits for many years and this one is testing me right from the start. I'm sure it'll turn out great. I'm taking my time....mainly because I don't want to hand over a piece of crap to my buddy. He'd never forgive me.

Oh yea, this sucker uses a LOT of LED lights. I've seen Keith's plane up close (and at night) and it is awesome. Not sure I'll install as many as he used...but enough to make this thing turn some heads.

Here's what we have so far.

Promoting my buddy's (mopar_man) scratch-built WACO CG-4A military glider. We did some aerotow with it over the weekend using his Venom C-47 and my Hangar 9 Piper Pawnee. If you haven't tried aerotowing, you're missing out. Lots of fun!

His build thread is here: WACO CG-4A for aerotow

I'm a very lucky Daddy. Below are two images of my sons flying with me. The first is Austin when he was 2 (now 6). The second is of Ryan (age 2) flying with me at TEFF last week.

I haven't changed much. Less hair maybe. Oh yea, and I've switched from 72MHz to Spektrum.

Looks like Ryan is going to be following in Daddy's footsteps. He's getting pretty good on RealFlight. The older one is more interested in trains.
