Hello all, I am starting the repair of the crashed Spitfire since I can't fly... This horrible wind won't go away - 15 to 20 mph each day. Beautiful temps but high winds.

Here are some pictures of the damage and I have started to cover the wing with paper. This is very thin kraft paper like you get at Home Depot or Lowes but a little thinner. I get the paper at my office as 1/2 is a paper company so I have lots of options. This is heavier than news print but lighter than the brown kraft you get at local stores.

Using Gorilla wood glue 50/50 for my first go around. I have read that some prefer 60/40 or even 70/30 but I will go with this to test. So far it looks good with no warping. Since this is a ParkZone plane I think it is heavier than most modelers planes that are scratch built so I don't think I will see any warping. Plus I have carbon fiber rods in the wings.

This is maiden of J3 Cub. Engine dies but land fine. Was very rich, leaned and running better.

FYI _ the plane was flown by Capt. Dennis C. Hallquist in 1951 aboard the USS Sicily during Korea. The plane is "sort of famous" as there is a picture of the crash landing on the ship and the plane sitting on the nose.

The report says he was injured but not how badly. The graphics are from Callie Graphics.

I need to paint he cowl white and work on the cowl flaps some then as I mentioned, add the retracts, flat coat, guns, weathering........

One Whoops! I put Jap kills instead of Chinese. I wonder if the planes had both?

Here are the pics I took of the #2 Spitfire after adding the Callie Decals. I will probably weather the decals a little bit to get the shine off them.

I still need to spray the protective coating over the whole plane and that may take it off.

If all goes well, I can maiden her this weekend and test out the flaps.

I finally have it all finished - except for the small letters for Lt. Bunny "Hopper" that I can't seem to find in the size and color I want.

Everyone needs to know that the plane is NOT finished. There are many details I still need to add. I just found a new canopy that I will modify so the "PILOT" will fit and so you can see inside and he can see out.

I also have other details to finish - Pushrod exit covers, bunny tail, modify the canopy for the bunny ears, etc.

NOTE: This plane was crashed TWICE and had been glued and repaired prior to the start of the restoration.

For those that are subscribed to the Parkzone Spitfire Thread - if you happen to get to this blog you will be getting a preview of the Top Secret Plane. I should be done tonight with the Panel Lines and Decals. Next will be to test some High Gloss Poly coating. This coating is "supposed" to protect against Scratches, UV Rays, Dust, Mid-Air with the vinyl monster of cmdl, etc.

Once the Coating had dried then I will start assembly. My new Spinner from Europe has finally arrived along with my prop adapter so I can mount the 4 blade adjustable pitch prop.

Once it is assembled then I have to do a really good CG balance and a roll balance.

Then it will be time to maiden.

Here is a little info on the Sierra Retracts and Wheel Wells.

I placed the air tank in the middle of the fuselage and secured it with heavy duty 3m double sided outdoor foam/tape. The tank was the large Robart tank and if you look in the fuselage you will see a hole in the center and the tank fit perfectly in that hole. When I get a chance I will take the wing off and get a couple of pictures of the tank and the tubing and fill tube bracket I made.

The wheel wells I custom built using balsa - I am sure there is a much easier and better way to make the wheel wells out there compared to how I made them. You can make them square much easier but I thought round would look good.

I first removed all the Ultracoat film and balsa skin on the bottom area of the wing. The balsa was removed from the right aileron servo to the left aileron servo. I did this because I wanted to reinforce the wind on both sides since I was installing the heavier retracts. I added double ribs and added some hardwood cross supports around the area where the retracts mount. Due to the size of the wheels you have to remove more of the ribs, so around this area I tried to build it up a little. I didn't do lots of research so you should probably talk to a good builder to see what you really need to reinforce. I will be lucky if one or both of the winds don't snap off.
