In 1987 I built this Avro Anson for the F4C world champs ,at the time I was really into the power competitions era. I thought at that time this was the top end of my building endeavours ,I since learnt it was simply the next step to build more scale models .

A long time friend had this Skychief and was obtained from him. The engine was in good shape except the crankshaft threads were destroyed and many original parts were missing. A parts Skychief was obtained from an RC groups fellow member and that engine provided the original needle valve / fuel tank assembly , crankshaft , spark ignition timer. The refurbished Skychief pleases me. The crankcase is very light zinc or such pot metal ??? the cylinder is very heavy cast iron. The piston has one ring of about 1/8" width. The piston was soaked for a week in ATF to help loosen the stuck piston ring on my Skychief.

Back in the 1980's (or maybe 90's...it's all starting to meld), my flying bud Neal and I got a couple of the newly released Cox R/C PT-19's. Made of molded foam, these are good-looking planes, with moderate performance from it's .049 Ranger (coincidentally, also the name of the full scale PT's engine).

We DID experience problems with getting the CG correct...even moving all the gear as far forward as we could, the model was still a bit tail-heavy, and would snap inverted if it's pilot got too frisky with pitch input. A chunk of lead ballast fixed the problem, but gave the .049 still more weight to drag through the sky.

I finally decided to "make the ballast work", and bolted a Medallion RC .09 to it's snout, spaced forward by a block of ply, and fed by a metal wedge tank suspended behind the firewall. The .09 was the exhaust band type, and worked really well...helping with the balance problem, AND turning the PT into a mean little ankle biter.

Neal followed suit...though his may have been powered by an O.S. .10, and we put on many impromptu Sunday pylon races, or dog fights (it was often difficult to tell the difference), with both planes amazingly surviving our crazy flying.

I'd like to get my old relic going for this year's S.M.A.L.L., again with it's .09 engine. The foam has survived in great shape, but the harder plastic parts are turning into cookie crumbs and will take some shoring up to be airworthy.

once i was enjoying a perfect day, no clouds, just catching flies, when noticed a monarch butterfly doing its typical wandering flying, at about 30 feet, when suddenly she began to circle and stopped flapping its wings...and began to climb fast. she had got a surface thermal, the kind of rising warm air, and in no time disappeared. i couldnt believe my eyes. no idea that they know how to make use of those currents.

Front part of fuselage went together just as the photo plans show. The plans consist of photos and part numbers.

Several have told me that the problem is with the weak tail boom, weak controls on linkages, and being tail heavy. Trying to rethink that part.

My response to the FAA's Remote ID proposal. I decided to take the approach of telling the world, the FAA, and whoever wants to listen what it is I do in the hobby. There are so many different avenues of RC flight (drones/quadcopters, FPV, helicopters, fixed wing/RC planes, gliders, etc) that I felt it was good to explain what it is I do in the hobby and how much I enjoy it. Like others, I think some of those that are making these rules and regulations don't really understand what it is that we do. So I hope this helps folks understand the hobby a little better (at least my part of it) and how these rules and regulations could affect myself and others.

I came across this early on with myself but many other new folks starting out with Flitetest airplanes. Why doesn't my FT plane look as good as the FT videos? The finished product has wrinkles in the foam...or my bevel cut is not as good...and the list goes on. Fact of the matter... these are planes built using $1 foamboard. They are cheap and disposable. They are going to get abused, crashed, and everything else. So, don't worry. Just do the best you can with it, fix her up, and fly it! Those little imperfections don't matter...as long as it flies and that you have fun with it.

I picked up this plane last summer along with a few others from a fellow rcg'er down in S. Florida.

He was flying it with an Evolution 20cc engine and had flown it regularly. It appears it had never suffered a major incident and there were just a few small patches on the covering. It hadn't been cleaned in while.

I only fly electric and after giving it a good degreasing, I installed an eflite Power 110 w/ a Castle 120 esc. The cowl was already cut open on the bottom so I used that as my battery access and opened up the bottom of the firewall. I slid one battery into the fuselage, and placed the other battery on the firewall behind the motor mount. I'm using two 4s 5000 in series for 8s, and an 18 x 10 prop. I can fly for 8-10 minutes and still have about 40% battery left. I'm still needing a prop hub to make it more complete, I should also find a good wood prop too...

It is really smooth to fly, and lands very easily. I'm a bit nose heavy and could use a lighter set a lipos, planning on trying it with two 3700's I have.

I have several flights on it so far, and am looking forward to when another club member can bring out his GP Super Stearman and we can do some formation flying....Continue Reading

There are many things to consider when building RC Craft. Most important things are good power sources and good receivers. You may or may not put a lot of money into a plane or drone only to have it crash due to loss of control.
Some people go on and on repeating the same mistakes spending lots of money on new planes and repairs and a lots of time and not knowing why their aircraft is crashing and will continue to until either they give up or they find a solution to their problem. The majority of the time it is the power source that you're using. Not all ESC and their internal BEC can supply enough power to your system. And yes you could find a cheap receiver for very little money. But that is not recommended. Also buying used receivers can be a hit-or-miss situation. Myself I have bought receivers used and some we're good and some were not. I guess you could buy a new receiver and that could be bad too but that has not been my experience.
You must know your equipment. you must know how to program your equipment. You must do a range check. The range check will usually tell you that the system is working or not. Intermittent problems can be very hard to solve. If your plane loses control you need to rule out if you have a brownout power source problem. Where your power source is simply not adequate enough for your particular system. Some people go to the route of changing the equipment all together. That is the expensive way to go. Project B

This is a flying wing that comes in a twin pack ( 2 wings ) , I got mine from banggood .

I really like twin packs .

Building the wing gives me what appears to be a strong and stiff platform that will stand up to some bumping and grinding . The Bee is suggested to be for FPV , but with everything hanging out in the breeze so to speak I was quite happy to build mine for line of sight flying .


The Motor

Quite simply a offering from my defunct x450 . Motor and prop are x450 left overs . When I did some motor testing the x450 motor prop combo pulled some 2.18A for some 121g of thrust @ 12,000 rpm . I did some more testing and

6x3 Gemfan 2s = 2.8A / 156g / 22.5w / 10,500rpm
5x3 Gemfan 2s = 2.44A / 133g / 20w / 11,700rpm
6x4.5 2s = 4.4A / 180g / 36w / 8100rpm = Too much prop
5x3x3 2s = 2.6A / 142g / 21w / 11,500rpm
x450 prop 2s = 2.18A / 121g / 18w / 12,000rpm

I will have to check the current to the motor in the model as it is a different motor to whats on the test stand . ( Back up current draw )

ESC

Quite simply the cheapest 10A Ebay ESC I could buy . The motor wires are soldered directly to the ESC and I was lucky that the motor ran in the correct direction the very first time .

Servos

Some small Turnigy I had lying around . The first servos I used were some Ebay ones ( 3.7 or 4.3g ) and unfortunately one of the servos was dead as a do-do bird . So I was forced to replace them with the Turnigy ....Continue Reading

I've finally found switches worthy of my XG-14's. These are for flying my DLG's for the launch mode settings in the radios. They are On-On-Momentary with a 25,000 cycle life. Digi-Key part number M2027ES1W01
