F3F racing at the Slot -- race day 3/8/09

Hey guys, it's that time of year again and we're having a lot of fun racing F3F in NorCal at NCSS's home slope, The Slot.

Races are held monthly, on the second Sunday of the month, at the site located near the Cordelia Junction -- I-80 and I-680.

We had a great race last month even if it was a bit cold. Here's some video from the 2/8 event:

2/8/09 Edition of the NCSS's Monthly F3F Race at the Slot (13 min 19 sec)

First time racers race free! Just bring your AMA card.

I hope to see you there March 8 at 11:00 a.m.

Kurt

I searched around and couldn't find directions or a latitude and longitude to The Slot. Anyone have them or point me in the right direction?

The Slot is the Nor Cal Slope Soarer's home slope and, except for race day, is limited to club members, only, for reasons associated with the land trust that owns the site. On race days, though, anyone with AMA is free to come and join in the fun. Here's a link in Google Earth to this awesome slope which supports F3F on both sides of the hill, as well as a record-setting DS hill.

The Slot slope races are a lot of fun. Great group of fliers.

The race on Sunday 3/8 is looking to be good with 10-15+ winds forecasted for the site. Due to the topography, forecasted wind speeds can usually be safely doubled by around 1:00 in the afternoon -- i.e., 20-30 mph is a good bet. Should be a fun day of racing

Pilot's meeting is currently scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the site (keep in mind the DST time change Saturday night). More info is here:

Looking forward

KurtMC - Too bad the only chance I get to fly at this site is during a comp. When are you guys planning to allow practices. I hear the carnage is really high - at a recent event before it got started - four planes were totaled I'd participate, I've been there to help even, but if you guys only allowed guest to come once and awhile to practice without being under pressure, would be great. I've emailed Rich numberous times and Ed before. So officially what is the deal with NCSS and the Slot.
Not complaining you are a great group of guys and if not flying I'd come by to help flag, support you guys or whatever. But let me know!!!

Hi Jack:

I can suggest a few things to get some practice out at the Slot -- either attend some of the races and get some laps in that way, or join the club (currently accepting new members), or stay in touch with one of the members who could probably arrange for you to fly the site as a guest on a non-race day (I'd need to make sure that's okay with the club and rules, but I think it's copacetic as long as you are a guest of a member and have AMA.)

Landings at the Slot aren't that tough if you get the hang of setting up for the landing and don't burn off too much speed approaching the LZ. I've not seen a lot of carnage there, other than the occasional botched landing. There's a nasty rotor on the far side of the LZ and it takes a few landings there to learn to keep the speed up through the rotor to the LZ and then hit the brakes for landing.

Hope to see you out there on Sunday - bring a plane and your AMA my friend -- or, drop me a PM and I'll let you know the next time we head down there for a fun fly.

Kurt

We had a great race today in some really nice sunshine for a change -- was nice to get out with the big toys and play with the big boys.

All planes came home in one piece and there were some mighty fast runs by a lot of folks.

Congrats to Marty for a top finish and to Scotty for racing the paint off his
Acacia in some challenging conditions. It was sure good to see Darrell out at the slope again and he showed us how it's done with a sub 40 on the last run. Way to go men! Special congrats to Lee for winning a round with an 80" plane

Here's some video of Darrell's smoking run:

Thanks for another great race guys -- looking forward to next month!

Great job Mart!!!!
The Freestyler just keeps adding wins to its accomplishments. It's by far the most winning model you can purchase today.
The model does it all. Ron Vann won the ISR with it last year, it won coast events, inland events, and B events as well.

F3F at the Slot 3/8

Thanks Tim,
The Freestyler 3 is a great plane. I got lucky with the winds and the plane did the rest. Darrell Z had the fastest time 39+ with his. When the air got better and we could add ballast the Freestyler really turned on.
