Blu-Baby Plans - Summary and links

Note added 02 FEB 2012: Compliments of forum member dz1sfb (Ken) there is is now a complete, step-by-step description thread for building the classic and basic Blu Baby 33 trainer from the parts kits that Ken sells. Anyone new to building or just contemplating building a Blu Baby 33 will find Ken's thread very helpful regardless of whether they are building from his parts kit or cutting their own parts from other foams and using any of the plans at the following links.

Blu-Baby 33 Classic (Monoblockless) Kit, Plans, and Build Guide thread - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1577227

Photos of a beautiful build of the Blu Baby 33 Classic plane can be seen in post #44 on page #3 of in this thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=44

Page #1 of the Blu-Baby thread has the plans for the 33, 32, and 24 inch BB's with UC (undercambered) and KFm3 wings.
Also the 2" monobloc parts, and the BB 33 float parts.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...8&postcount=75

For further help on building the KFm3 wings, here are two more recent How To threads on building two other versions of the KFm3 wing. The first is an excellent choice for a basic trainer wing for flying in windier conditions. It is very stable and self recovering, every bit as stable as the KFm3 wing with the dihedral built in to the center joint and with 1" of dihedral at each tip.

** Blu Baby 33" KFm3P Polyhedral Tip Wing Build ** - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1474665

The following wing is a flat KFm3 wing with ailerons. A great wing for those who have mastered the basics of flight and are looking for a more aerobatic performance out of their BB 33. Arguably the ultimate windy day wing for the BB 33 too!

BB 42 UC Note: The original plan for the BB 42 was with an under cambered wing. Tony65x55 changed the design to a KFm3 because of strength issues with the UC wing. The tiled plan for the original BB 42 UC wing plan has since been reposted on page 700, post #10495:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...ostcount=10495

The tiled plan for the BB 42 UC wing file is:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showa...mentid=2398997

A one sheet plan for the BB 42 with a UC wing is posted on page #1254 as an attachment to post #18801:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...ostcount=18801

The link to the BB 42 UC wing world plan is:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showa...8&d=1348113610

Build the BB 42 UC at your own risk, wing strength is marginal. For a UC winged BB 42, building it with a KFC wing will eliminate the wing issues. Read the following.

BB 42 KFC Note: Springer's hybrid under cambered wing with a KF step and other reinforcements is known as the "KFC" wing and is a very successful solution for putting an under cambered wing on the BB 42. The details for building the KFC wing are here in Springer's How To on page 536, post #8031:

I've added a Mini How To on building a landing gear to the Tuffy thread. This design will lend itself to nearly all the Blu-Babies and some of the other Tony65x55 designs. The Mini How To has some good hints and lots of photos of wire bending for those new to that:

List of KFm wings and step locations.

These pictures only show relation of step on top or bottom not exact placement fore or aft on the wing surface.

KFm wings have been built with steps set at 20%-80% distance from leading edge with varying results.

Some may have noted a KFC- KFm Under Cambered wing on the Blu-Baby thread. It is the KFm5a variant.
Independently two people developed similar designs that worked.
One put the step on top of the UC wing.
The other put the step on the bottom of the UC wing for the Blu-Baby.
They both work and be used on any UC wing.

6-7-08 Xanadu KFm5b
6-10-08 Springer "KFC" now designated as the KFm5a.

Making a list of BB motor combos.

Considering the amount of requests received for motor/ ESC/ prop combos we are asked about I will put a list of known usable combos put together by the Pros on the thread.
Some of you Pros can help me collect them if you know where some are listed already in the thread.

Let's start with BB-33 and BB-42 but 24's and BBAP's are okay also.

There will be no preference given. I'll try to do alphabetical listing or something of the sort eventually so no preference is infered.
I will add a disclaimer it is a starting point for finding a power system not an endorsement but is what "WE" use on ours.

Might include some links so they can find where to buy.
No advertising intended but where you buy.
A link to that motor or ESC you use is sufficient not the main page if possible.
That way you get the pricing and specs.

Post here on the Tony sticky would be prefered. I can delete posts after I transfer and check the links are good.
Keep your list to what you use and know works.
I don't need someone listing what might or should work for this list. Keep that discussion on the BB thread.

I will need all of you to help with this to make a viable list.
So comments or suggestions as things develop to make the list better or more easily usable will be appreciated.

The sticky is for everyone on RCG just as Tony's planes and plans.

Props- be specific on props you list with a combo.
"Slowfly" is useless with out a brand and part number.
GWS EP8040 can be Googled.
Adding RS, HD or DD designations can be helpful also.
Just using the GWS line as examples.
APC brand as I have found also have sizes with several different style props .

Thaks in advance
Mike

You have to include battery in the list of sucessful power setups. At a minimum battery voltage is needed. Other battery specs could be helpful too.

Many motors are available with several Kv's so you need that too.

Here's what I have used:

BB42:
KDA 20-22L---HXT 18A or Turnigy 25A---GWS 11x4.7SF on 2s or GWS 10x4.7SF on 3s or GWS 1060HD on 3s
FC 2822 (1200kV)---HXT 18A or Turnigy 25A---GWS 10x4.7 on 2s, GWS 9050HD on 3s

BBAP1:
KDA 20-22L---HXT 18A or Turnigy 25A---GWS 10x4.7SF or GWS 1060HD on 3s
FC 2822 (1200kV)---HXT 18A or Turnigy 25A---GWS 9050HD on 3s

BBAP1 (higher power setup):
KDA 22-15M or Scorpion 2215-18---TowerPro 30A or Turnigy 25A or Turnigy 40A---GWS 1060HD or APC 10x5E on 3s

All my other Tony planes are scaled up so the power systems won't really translate.
