05 sized Sea Fury, being built from Tempest Mk II kit. Most scale Hawker fighter yet

A few weeks back, I posted the plans to my new 1/10.8 Sea Fury.

I started building one earlier this week, using one of my Tempest Mk II kits as a starting point.

I hand cut the formers, and tail, to make the fueslage more scale-like than the old Sea Fury, and i will clip a bit out of the center of the wing to give scale span and planform. I also modified pieces to make the exhaust stack area more scale-like.

First picture - old Sea Fury

Next picture, 2003 Sea Fury general "hump" shape.

Next picture, my 2002 Tempest Mk II, exhaust close-up

Final picture, my 2003 Sea Fury exhaust are close-up. Note gills extend up to upper turtle deck.

Let me know what you think of the improvements.

Cheers,
Marc

The fuselage and eppanage are now done, save for the wing fillets.

I allign the stab the the fuse, and then the wing to the stab, and then I put the fillets on. They really lock things into place nicely.

It is sitting on the wing from my 1/12 size Tempest Mk V. My Mk II wing won't go on, as the fuse of the Sea Fury is just a hair wider at the front of the wing, and the air intakes attached to the wing interfere. My 1/10.8 Mk V doesn't have this problem, but it is glow, and I don't want any gunk on my wooden airframe, at least not until it is covered.

The front half of the darker gill where the exhaust stubbs will go will be covered by either a piece of polished aluminum, or a piece of Stainless Steel shim stock discoloured by a propane torch prior to installation. 3M 77 to install.

Very little progress today.

I started on wing center section and then ran out of medium Cy-a.
I asked my wife and son if we could go to the hobby shop on Saturday to get some. I was out-voted.......

So, I'll post a picture of the full-scale with my son beside it (he was about 28 months, then - now 4 1/2)

This will be my colour scheme. There were also some unique details to this plane, as it had served in 3 air forces, and had been modified a bit.

I got a bit of time to work on it tonight.

Now it has its own wing.

Notice how it looks a little short in span for the fuse. It is actually a few inches wider in span than the fuselage is long. The wing is clipped significantly from a Tempest, though.

After a couple of weekends where work got in the way, I made a bit more progress on the Sea Fury.

I managed to get the wing permanently installed, and add wing fillets, air intakes, and the oil cooler radiator. If you look closely in the head-on shot, you can also see the fake radial engine that serves as the motor mount.

I will be gluing my cowl to the airframe so that this is a nice, solid mount.

I will likely do my usual "open canopy" cooling air exit.

What a great looking plane!
Are you going to use the same colour scheme as the full scale one you posted? (Canadian Warplane Heritage?)
BTW Did you ever finish/fly the V1 that you were working on in an earlier thread?
Cheers

I'm going to use the colour scheme from the Sea Fury shown here. I won't be stretching the canopy, however - his had a jump seat behind the pilot, and a longer canopy.

It actually belonged to a man named Carey Moore. It was not a CWH airplane, though I know that he spoke well of the organization.

At Mid-Am 2001, I could only stay Saturday, as I promised my son we'd go to the beach on Sunday. On the way to the beach, I was speaking with my wife about how I was going to make my Sea Fury like Mr. Moore's, as he had been kind enough to let my son and I into his hangar to get a bunch of detail shots of his Sea Fury, and its spare Centaurus. Later that day, we heard Mr. Moore had a fatal crash at an airshow in Sarnia, in the Sea Fury.

The V1 is waiting for me to get back to it. I'm going to retrofit ailerons (I've decided to chicken out on the elevon system, after talking to some who've tried it on non-deltas).

I've been getting a little side-tracked by work and sports lately, and haven't been doing that much building. Though, with the Sea Fury and V1 just about ready to cover, motivation is easy. When I get my power system for the Sea Fury (a bit below 400 W), I should get very excited about getting it ready to fly!
