Build Log
Guppy MK 2.

Edit (13.March.2009): PLANS AVAILABLE! (CLICK)

Edit (17.sept.2010): DXF files for use to cut parts for GUPPY 2 on CNC router ot laser, available here!

Hi!

I will start to assemble the new GUPPY MK II. electric sailplane and presented it here. I choose a new thread for this build, as this sailplane difer from "old Gupy" in many detaills.

The main changes are:

- two piece wing
- new airfoil (wider speed range)
- 3 wing options: Poly with no ailerons, 1,56m span and 1,72m wingspan with ailerons
- longer cockpit to allow installation of lighter Li-po cells and lighter BL motors
- reinforcments in the fuselage/wing joint to prevent fuselage damage on unfortunate landings
- elevator and rudder servo tray
- optional removable horizontal tail
- simplified wing tip
- simplified transition from root wing trailing edge to the fuselage

At this moment, (Feb 05, 2009, 06:14 AM) the plans are at this state:

Plans&drawings content:

- left wing halve assembly drawing
- right wing halve assembly drawing
- fuselage assembly drawing
- some balsa parts templates
- 3 view drawing of model with polydihedral wing (no ailerons)
- 3 view drawing of model with 1,56 m wingspan
- 3 view drawing of model with 1,7 m wingspan
- horizontal tail assembly drawing (both scratch & CNC versions)
- vertical tail assembly drawing
- wing ribs
- wing servo bay detail
- fuselage formers and reinforcing doublers
- fuselage assembly steps
- cockpit canopy drawing and notes (not shown on drawing above)
- fuselage cross sections and notes (not shown on drawing above)
- R/C equipment instalation (not shown on drawing above

I think, that this plans set is the most complete I ever did. I will try to add allso a complete list of materials and suggestions for all R/C equippment.

Note: some of the drawings might be changed in published version, as I constantly refine them adding some things, or rearanging some of the items...

I already cut some of the parts on my homemade CNC machine.
Yesterday I bought some missing materialls and hopefully I will be able to show here some subassemblies this weekend (as I bought new camera )

So much for now!
Stay tuned !

Regards!

Here are the 3 view drawings for all 3 different wing options:

Weights and wing loadings are just my estimations and might be changed when prototype will be finished.

All drawings will be possible to print out on any home printer A4 format in tiled version. A complete set of plans will be zipped in one file.

That file will be possible to download from my website (very soon now), but I will charge them. The price will be pretty low, so anyone could afford them.

Model is designed in "metric", but on each drawing there is a two sided ruler; 10cm and 4 inch which can help to "measure" some dimensions.

I can make a list of "equivalent" imperial materialls, but you must know that 3 mm equals roughly 1/8", but actually 1/8" is a little thicker than 3 mm.

So, using some of materials with imperial dimensions demand to from the builder to prepare himself to fine tune some joints in order to fit properly.

For instance, the slots in the wing ribs should be the same as the spar caps dimensions. The trailing edge slots where ribs will fit allso should be the same wide as rib thickness.

But I think, that should not prevent builders to use imperial materialls when building the new Guppy.

Regards!

I have access to a large-size plotter/printer, so will you produce non-tiled, full size drawings?

Thanks!!

I'm going to guess anything that is 28mm diameter or less, can swing a 9 inch prop, and hauls a 575gr guppy aloft. as for the battery, 3s 1300mah.

Very good job Mitja!
...but I'll wait for the larger Guppy, till.... Easter?

BTW: there's also a mixed depron/balsa version of your Guppy; it's named (by me) "Gummy"!
Here's the link.

Easter??..Who knows but first this "advanced Guppy" must be finished.

I put your forum where you build a Gummy into alta vuuista babel fish translator, and enjoed much!

What kind of paper did you use? Is it a kind of "old fashion" silk paper for free flight model covering?

Well, I'm not in hurry any more; I'm building an Arthobby Castor and there are few other gliders waiting to be finished!

Mitja, I gave only the name to her! That's because I tought to made it too, but... Albyone did her first!

Right! Modelspan is quite that old fashion paper!
He covered then with glassing paint used for parquet.

I told Albyone to show his work in your Guppy thread, but he's not enough familiar with english.
If you write there that you liked it, he will rise one or two meters from the floor, without any other aid!
