Uhhh......20T and 22T may work for an extreme lightweight 40" EDGE, but it is still low on the power end, I mean you woud really, really have to go lightweight.

I actually have been considering doing an ultra lightweight 40" EDGE. The one I have now is all up at 28oz. and is one of the best, if not the best plane I have flown. Just fantastic. So I have been crunching numbers and figure I can get around 24oz. all up with the 20T-1030 I have laying around. So that's 1.5lbs x 150 watts per pound = 225 watts potentially required on a vertical. That would be pushing the 185watt rated motor, but might be possible.

Go with whatever 3D Hobbyshop recommends and you should be happy. I have 4 of there recommended setups and have plenty of power on all of them. I am going with a Hacker a30-28s with an airboss 35 esc.

FWIW - with the 12x6E I don't think my Himax/Cobri is putting out much more than 200 watts and my power is fine (mine is just under 27 ounces).

Guys,

Here are some pictures of the 42" Slick. You will also notice that there is a different color motor in there right now. I have been doing a little bit of testing on a new Omega motor for Ben. This motor is a 72 gram motor and will be priced really well. So far its working really well.
I put this motor on a 12x6 prop and hooked it up to a 3dhobbyshop 3s 2200 pack and here are the results. The motor was making 350 watts at 30-35 amps. The pack is an older pack that was flown a bunch at SEFF and a bunch this summer. I think i could go down to a 11x5.5 and get a little less performance but it still will be really good. I went out tonight and put a flight on the plane and it seemed to be really nicely setup even though it was 25 outside.

NOTE: This model has been changed to check a few things on the aircraft. For example this airplane has the rudder servo in the tail. I did this to check and see how it would work out back there. The rudder Pull pull setup will be right where the receiver sits. I also hogged out the motorbox to see what really could be gotten away with.

+1 for pushrod rudder if it balances OK. Much faster to setup and does not require as much maintenance.

This plane did balance with the servo in the tail. I think we are going to have the option in there but most will run pull pull. With the rudder in the tail the battery sits about 3/4 of the way under the motorbox.

DG,

Your correct, I was messing with SFG's to see how they would work but I found that they make little difference. I'm really looking forward to going out tomorrow and putting a few more flights on the plane. I have a few lighter packs that I want to try and see how it handles it.
