Hi Guys,
Although I have been pylon racing for quite a while, I am fairly new to electrics. I am looking to convert a Q-500 to electric and want to know your thoughts on my selection for power and such


Motor : EFlite 25 Outrunner
Speed control : 60A Castle Pheonix with BEC
Batteries : 5S Li-ion 2300 A123
Prop APC 9X9e
Plane V-Tail Pacemaker
Flying wieght : 3lbs 8 oz

I would like to know your thoughts on speed and can we get a 3 minute , full throttle run without loss of performance. This is all ground work for NEPRO as we may in the future have a spec class electric Q-500 racing.

The spec class is a great idea Lewis! I think you would get much better high speed performance however if you were to look at some of the Scorpion motors instead. Keep us posted!

To be honest this is just starting out. We are looking to match the speeds of the current 424 glow powered q-500 models which are in the 110-115 range and use off the shelf items that are easy to come by.

Where are the Scorpion motors available?

I am glad to see someone doing a Q-500 conversion. I have converted a Predator 500 using a Turnigy SK Aerdrive XP 35-42-1100 on 4S 20C 2350's turning an APC "E" 9 x 6. I have attached a video of the first flight.

I have since tested it with a 35-48-1100 and have it over 105 mph. I have ordered a 9 x 7.5 & 9 x 9 APC "E" to get more speed. The total system cost is under $100 dollars. The goal was to replicate the speed of a TTpro 40 which is the choice for AMA 424 racing. The weight RTF is 3.75 lbs which is the minimum weight for a Q-500. The target speed is 118 mph.

Last year I've flown my electric viper between the Irvine Q40 and OS 40 FX powered models during competitions.

The goal was to match the speed of the IC powered models and with my setup this was very close:

Great conversion. There is a bunch of power available in that system you have. What kind of speeds were you seeing with it?

My target was to develop an EP conversion that would be around 120 MPH. That is the speed of our sport class 424 Q-500 which use the TT40 Pro. The new 35-48-1100 Turnigy motor pushed the speed to where I wanted it. The video was taken with the shorter 35-42-1000. I was glad that the conversion worked out. Now the next step is to see if we can get people to race it.

That video was taken at the AMA National Site here in Muncie. I live about 3 miles from there. I wish it were my flying site. It is huge!!

Just out of interest, what is the reaction of the IC racers to the E-versions?

Further, I am jealous of the light weight you guys are getting for yours... my Viper is 4.4 pounds!!

Not really sure what the response will be from IC fliers. We are trying to generate some interest in electric racing in the states because right now all we have is F5D and that happens very rarely. I know there is some electric racing in Caliornia and abroad.

The goal here was to take a commonly used airframe and convert it using off the shelf parts and make it as fast as a glow model for virtually the same cost.

The weight was a concern, but the 4S 2350 pack used weighs 8.5 oz, the Motor weighs 5.5 oz, and the ESC weighs 1.5 ozs. A TT pro 40 weighs 17 ozs. The weight ends up being a wash.

I have had some feedback from the SEMPRA group on setting some guidelines for EP Q-500. My next goal is to race against my brother flying a TT40 powered 424 Q-500 and see who wins. We will video this of course. No matter win or lose, if I can stay with him for (10) laps, the conversion will be a success.

I also know that the NMPRA is looking to get an electric class started. Maybe this would be a way to get that done for very little expense.

You`re not the onlyone flying a electric Q500.
I fly a Grand Chelem quikie, powered bij a turnigy 50-45, 100A esc. and 5cell`s 5000mah lipo. Today i made the first good flight, and it`s fast, FAST!!
