I could probably ship a KIT for you? Thinking about that... Say all CF are precut and labeled... But you have to do the rest - covering, electronics, etc...

The big W kite is flown..Now it will be taken apart and a 20" version made..

edit its all been done and flown, and its poor, I was having second thoughts with this one as it went more and more overweight.. and looked too big.. the flying was barely ok .aileron response much too slow.. stabilty too good..not at all what I was wanting.. the rudder much more effective and I put that down to the higher dihedral being used.. but overall it was much like an earlier large area kite, with its poor roll and slow responses...

problems with COG too far back... slow ailerons are down to wing angles and size.. overweight not so much of a problem , you can see how slow it goes...
The rolls are right at the end of the video.. one roll takes a couple of seconds...poor
.

Might be just what you want for night flying, or to lend to beginners?

Cheers

No... If you want a beginners model then the foam versions are cheaper and will fly better..
22-24long would be a good size in foam for beginners .. Iv done a build thread for them here
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1504784
I was disappointed that the kite came in 3oz heavier than the same size foam version , and the KFm4 foam version flew much nicer... KF foam wings usually do fly better..

That big kite is no more... Its being modded at the moment..
I partly disassembled it, then
I loosened the covering, then shortened the center section to 20 inches, and made each half of the center narrower to 5.5 inches , then refastened the fabric.
I mostly left the wing tips alone, but it was easy to remove the sweep forward hinge line rod for the elevons and reposition the next spar forward with a slight sweep so it met up with the rear of the fuzz.. see the pics..
Lastly the elevons were reshaped to fit the new length..

The new shape should be better for what I am after..

What are the characteristics of the different CF available? What thickness of a 75-100cm length will allow bending in a horseshoe, or even circle, shape - 2mm maximum? Thicker CF will not bend well? I assume tubes are strictly for stiff lengths? And strips are only used for foam wings? Also, CA and thread is just fine, but heat is not?
I'm going ot order a box of CF from HK, but will have to go on backorder, and need to know all the sizes and ammount before ordering.
I'm looking to make a couple of small simple IFO-type kites, and a CF version of my seal kite.

My kite uses 3X1X1 CF Tube like center spar and horizontal tail section. Other bending area, i use 2 CF Rod.

Thanks Ken. So 3mm tube with 1mm hole in it? And 2mm rod?
For these small kites, what motor, prop, esc, lipo combination do you find best? How much lift is generated, how quiet, and how long does the lipo last for 1 flight?

For my KFO Kite, i am able to fly about 8 mins with 2S 500mAh packs. Because it's light compared to my other kites which has lights and many other wiring. The lazerkite flies about 6 mins (i think due to the lights consuming power from same lipo).

The KFO runs off a Techone C20 Brushless Motor spinning 9x5, 12A ESC.
The Lazerkite runs off a Emax CF2805 Brushless Motor spinning 7x5, 18A ESC.

You are using much smaller rods than I do... and its probably why your kites are going so well..
I always struggle to get a stiff kite, mine seem to flexible..

Sometime the flexiness makes it durable.

heres how mine keep going...auw 20oz no lights yet..it needs all that weight up front to get the COG, otherwise I would be using a smaller motor and battery.. It should go ok....it has loads of power..and a wing loading of 3.8ozsqft...5.3 sqft area
perhaps tomorrow it will fly..

Thanks Ken. I looked at some of your videos, but couldn't hear the motor over the background noise. Do you know of any almost silent power setups? The main reason for me to make a smaller kite is to fly late at night near sleeping neighbors. No point if it sounds like a power drill, like all my other planes.

Going quiet is easiest done by using bigger slow fly props.. less revs less noise.. It also helps if everything is balanced well, then less vibration So use two cells on your motor and prop it up a size or more .. At least with fabric covering the model does not act like a sounding board as it does with foam types..

My usual systems, like that one above, are 3 cell higher revving and noisy on whatever model I have.. but when cruising at lower power even those are not too bad..

My quietest is a blue wonder 1300kv using a 9x4.7 gws slow fly prop, on an octagonal kite... its also one of the best fliers, being better than the simple or IFO type shapes
