Looking at the video over and over I'm beginning to wonder if he was really that close to the trees. It also looks like he has plenty of air between the plane and the tree tops.
At the field where I fly there's a line of trees along the road and that's where I park and set up. The wind seems to always come from across the road then into the field. I walk out in the field some because I have to take off toward the trees and then make a sharp 180 to get into clear air. Kinda nerve racking the first few times, but then you get used to it. I haven't put a plane in a tree yet (knock on wood).
