Top Flite 1/7 Scale P-51D Mustang

After building a bunch of ARF models I decided to go back to stick building for a change. I settled in on the Top Flite 1/7 Scale P-51 for my winter build. The kits specs are as follows:

Wingspan: 65 in (1651 mm)
Wing Area: 734 inē (47.4 dmē)
Weight: 8-10 lb (3629-4540 g)
Fuselage Length: 56.6 in (1438 mm)
Engine Required: 2-stroke .61-.90 cu in (10-15 cc) or 4-stroke .91-1.20 cu in (15-20 cc)
Radio Required: 4-6 channel w/4-7 servos

I plan on the following modifications:
Electric Conversion
Scale Counterweights on Tail Feathers
Retracts on the Mains and Tailwheel
Scale Cockpit
Scale Gear Doors
Lights
Anything else that comes up along the way!!

I hope to show the build along the way, so any help or scale mods that people have done will help!!

The scale counterweight mods on the tail you are doing, are they the ones shown in the plans?

I'll be watching along. Very interested in seeing other top flite builds. doing one with mods myself so please post your construction stages.

I completed most of the stabilizer minus any mods tonight. It will be skinned when I am done modifying it. Not a ton to show yet!

I just saw this thread. I'm a week behind you. As I am writing this, I'm hunting for the parts for the stab. I was going to do my own build thread but may just join in on this one.

This is my second build. Last one I did was back in 1995. The kit took me a while to put together. I started in June and finished around November while working fairly diligently. I doubt I'll be able to build that fast. This model is all about cutting, carving and sanding.

Its great to have someone else building the same kit. I have been sick the last week so the progress has slowed on my build. I managed to get the stab half sheeted. Hopefully I can work on the counterweight mod this afternoon.

Should I start playing dueling banjos?

I'm not doing the counterbalance mod. That kind of scale detail is not important to me. I'm afraid I'll just break them off moving the plane out of my car.

Good luck on your build, I built one of these a long time ago with Nicads. Back when we worried all day about weight.

Some building info.
Here is what I had in my old note book. for my TF P-51 build

Used lighter 1/16 balsa on tail estimated 0.2 oz weight reduction

Recut rudder pieces with lighter balsa measure 0.5 oz weight reduction

Rudder 1.3 oz before sanding, 1.0 oz after

Cut new W-1C and W-1B bulkheads
Ply was 0.7 oz, Balsa was 0.4 oz, at 2 each total weight reduction was 0.6 oz

Leading edge, replaced hard with soft balsa reduction was 0.3 oz

Replaced fusealage side and doubler with contest balsa
Kit was 8.5 oz
Contest balsa unit was 2.8 oz, weight reduction was 5.7 oz

Forward crutch , ply was 1.8 oz, balsa replacement was 0.8 oz, reduced 1 oz

Replace formers F-9 and 1B with balsa, lost 0.5 oz

Replace formers #4, 1C and #2 with balsa reduced 0.3 oz

Replaced motor mount
GRP that came with kit 4.1 oz
Balsa ply mount 1.2 oz

Total weight redcuction was 12 oz.

You may be able to cut some balsa out of the fuse sides and reduce weight a bit further.

Full up wing with retracts and servos was 3 lbs 2 oz
Fuse was 2 lbs 8 oz
Motor and esc was 13 oz
Cowl, prop, and adapter was 11 oz
24 cells was 52 oz
other misc was 5 oz

Thats what I had in my notes. Your mileage may vary

Never got a good flight due to a bad wing warp and multiple crash repair cycles

Power was an aveox motor and then a maxcim motor. 24 2000 mAhr Nicads. Retracts were spring airs 103HD I believe

Well I got a chance to spend a few hours on the plane today. I managed to finish up the horizontal stab sheeting and sanding. I also added the extra bracing for the counterweight mod. Man this thing requires a lot of sanding!!!

Now onto the Vertical Stablizer!!!

Michael it looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. You should get done for the spring to maiden it. And I bet when you maiden this airplane your knees will shake. I.m enjoying the build. Cliff
