For masking, is it just me or is masking tape the worst thing to use for masking? For me if I do a dark color the tape just soaks up the paint and pulls it under and it looks like crap.

I've been using scrap depron and cut lines, angles, curves, etc and just lay it down, spray and lift it off. The plane above is just straight lines but I did some slightly more complex designs and more colors with that technique.

I'm enjoying 3-color designs. 2 subtle colors and a bright high-light. I've done 3 planes like this and at least the color combination have looked nice.

Nice job on the paint, DA.

The standard trick for masking tape is to spay a light coat of clear before you use color. The clear wicks up and shuts out the color.

I've found that using a simple template is great with an airbrush. Angling the brush so it spays away from the part you don't want to paint helps a lot.

Airbrush template technique

Here is a way to avoid having to tape your airplane. I used simple poster board from Hobby Lobby, cut my templates, and used large washers to weight them down. Works great, especially if you are using straight line templates.

One trick I've learned is to start with the lightest color, and spray everything needing the light paint. Next, move to the darker colors. As in my example, all the yellow was sprayed first, then red, and finally the black highlight was added last, including some large stripes on the bottom of the plane to aid with visibility and plane orientation. This will allow you to minimize your color changes, and save time.
This is really easy to do, and can be practiced on scraps before applying to your nice new model.

I hope the photos speak for themselves.

Yes, poster board or heavy paper makes a quick and effective mask. I use some old posters..free! It is also great if you are trying for a symetrical design. Just cut one side and them give the poster board a quick wipe to get off the wet paint and flip it over to do the other side.

Anything flat and rigid makes a good mask. Heavy paper can absorb the water from acrylic paint and curl up - not good for intricate patterns. I use plastic dividers from school notebooks. During back to school sales, they are sometimes very cheap. Quite durable and they lay flat.

It works, makes the foam very rigid as well. As for the warping, its mostly from being wet with paint once dry to the touch lay the pieces flat w/ possibly weights on them. They'll be straight as a board and more rigid.

I use mylar from a local drafting supply house. Once or twice a year they clean house of old drawings, all done on mylar 24 x 36 inch sheets. I print out the full size PDF of the plans on paper and sketch up the color scheme I want to use then lay the mylar over the plan, trace and make cut outs for each color. The mylars last for a very long time and can be cleaned up with solvents when they get gunked up.
