Scratch builder paint tips / ideas: instructional videos
Hey guys,
First of all, I do realize that there is a forum dedicated to painting. But is you all are like me, you probably just hang out around this forum, and don't travel to them all. Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to start a scratch builders paint thread. I want this thread to be many things. I want it to be a place for tips on how to paint your foamies. As we all realize, we can all benefit from others knowledge. I also want it to be a place to place picture of your painted planes to give others ideas of schemes to paint their planes. I am by no means a professional, or even the best painter on the forums (there are some amazingly talented people on here, gary ), but I have learned a few things I hope can help people out. All the things I have to share I have learned from trying it or from others on rcgroups, I would just like to focus it into one scratch builders thread. So this being said, below is a video of me painting a plane. Yes, I know it sounds riveting. It is long, like 30 minutes, but it goes through the process I use to mask and make a design. Your best bet might be to get it going, stop it and let it load completely then watch it, otherwise it might glitch and stuff.
Here is a link to another thread about painting using some different techniques. Paint thread I am also going to be attaching some pictures of planes I have painted to give some ideas. Please post your painted planes so I can steal your idea! Last edited by adreher; Dec 02, 2009 at 11:56 AM. |

Your planes look cool. I like them. My stuff is simple, just a few Sharpie markers, a few patters, or ruler, and thats about it.

I had the good fortune to watch Adam painting first hand. Great results and surprisingly easy if you follow the simple techniques in his video.
Two thumbs up for this thread Adam! |

If more poeple add how they do various "paint" jobs (Sharpies, paint, decales, etc), then I vote for to be an eventual Sticky, as it will be a valuable tool for the scratchbuilder.

Sharpie + paint
Here is a paint job I did that looks OK and was very easy to do.
On this Bluecor build I drew/colored the tiger stripes and canopy first with a black sharpie. Next I over coated the plane with red Krylon H2O paint except for the very bottom where I used some yellow Krylon H2O. No masking at all, very easy to do with Sharpies and rattle cans. |

Very nice. Thank you, I've done some airbrushing on a snowmobile cowl years ago. I'd like to see an example of how you do the lightining bolts. That bipe looks great.
I'm going to try the riveted aluminum look on mine using sharpies and some spray. I'll post a pic when done. |

Great idea - subscribed.
I just use rattle cans, but a tip (?) I learned a while ago was to get one of the plastic handles that attaches to the spray can. Makes it a lot easier to control the painting. Terry |

Hey, thanks guys. Keep posting pictures and ideas!
I use an Iwata eclipse. airbrush I will try to get some more video's done, but I'll have to make some more planes before I can paint them. ![]() Here is a video about painting lightning. I don't use the blue and stuff, I just use white, but it's a good example of how to do it.

I always wondered why there wasn't a thread like this here. Foamy Scratch builders finish differently because they are working with different materials. Should include paint and all forms of finish and sub finishes. IMHO
Should be a sticky too. Good for you adreher.
