WeaselFest '09 - April 25-26, Santa Barbara
Looks like the Weasel Evo is going to be in production soon, so let's start talking about WeaselFest 2009. We had good wind and a good group last year. This year we'll do it April 25 & 26 in Santa Barbara .
For the past couple years, Ellwood and Knapp's Castle have been the two primary flying sights
Additional directions and local knowledge provided by the SBSlopers website.
If you enjoy camping, El Capitan State Beach is only about 10 minutes north of Ellwood, it has good facilities, some R/V parking and is very family friendly. If you do plan on camping, book early!
Louie wrote a great synopsis last year. Rather than recreate it, I'll just cut and paste. There are a lot of options, but be advised that most hotels in Santa Barbara and Goleta proper will be more than $100 per night and book up way in advance. You have been warned
Ellwood is located at the far western edge of Goleta, about 15 miles from downtown Santa Barbara. So if you are coming with family and you want to be downtown so they can walk to go shopping and sightseeing, I suggest getting a hotel in downtown Santa Barbara proper and then driving the 15 minutes or so out to Ellwood to fly. That's what I would do if I was coming with my family. There are a bunch of nice options, they are not cheap, but they are well-located and you will have a good time with your family.
If you want to stay on the beach in downtown SB, I recommend you check out the Harbor View Inn which is right on the beach and about half a block from State Street. It's a bit more money, obviously, as it's right on the strand and a pretty nice place, but the rooms are very comfortable and you have easy access to the beach, harbor, Stearns Wharf, etc. The shopping of downtown State Street is a 10-15 minute easy walk away. Also, the Harbor View Inn donated a room to the fundraiser raffle for Josť Luis, so of course I strongly endorse them as they did so much to help us out!
There are a few hotels on upper State Street as well that may be a bit less pricey, though are a longer walk or a short drive to get to the main shopping area. Examples include the Orange Tree Inn, the Lemon Tree Inn, GuestHouse Inn & Suites, the Hacienda Motel and the Sandman Inn. There are also a number of Motel 6 offerings, in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria.
You can also try booking a hotel in Goleta, a bit closer to the flying site, and then drive to downtown SB if desired. There are a number of hotels on both Calle Real and Hollister Avenue in Goleta, all of them are reasonably well-located and comfortable. There is a Holiday Inn, an Extended Stay America and a Super 8 Motel (the Super 8 looks like one of the cheapest options, around $80 a night).
You could also check out hotels and motels in Carpinteria, which is about 15 minutes southeast of Santa Barbara and about 35 minutes from Ellwood. There is a Holiday Inn there that is quite nice and more reasonably priced. There's also the Sandyland Reef Motel.
Cheap: Super 8, Motel 6, anything you can find by searching "motel goleta" or "motel Santa Barbara" on Google
Nice: Anything on State Street with an address of 1200 or less, anything on Cabrillo Blvd. PM me with specific questions.
I believe I can squeeze it into my schedule but Noel won't make it this year due to his DG300 competition schedule. It's sad when your kid can afford bigger toys than you!
I'll keep the updated frequency list in this post and bring my frequency board to the Fest.

Same hotel as last year? I thought it was OK and the location was good.
Mike, I hope to be as proud as my boy as you must be.
