Martin P6M-2 Hydro Flaps
I'm building a 1-16th-scale, EDF-powered model of the Martin P6M-2 SeaMaster flying boat. A photo of the model in its current state of completion is attached. If anyone has built a model of this aircraft and has some suggestions/comments on how the hydro flaps (used by the aircraft to assist in water-borne steering), could be actuated/controlled I'd appreciate receiving them.

Couple them to the rudder and use a mixer switch to turn them on/off. Great job, I have looked at my drawings many times thinking I should build one but too many other projects. Post some pictures when your finished. Are you going to use Minifans?

Hi Flailing!
I plan to use 4 HW609 fans. I finally received a couple of motor/fan adapters so will be doing some testing over the next week or so. I'll send along some more photos as building/finishing progresses. Thanks for the feedback on the control scheme. Dave P. |

Dave -
You continue to amaze me with the projects you choose, as well as your craftsmanship. Of course, I am very pleased that they are seaplanes! Good fortune with this jetted one, Terry in Portland |

Hi SJ!
The model in the background is a Dornier Do-26B, built from plans by Gene Falada. |

Very amazing work, I am impressed with the quality. You are truly an artist. Any chance of getting photos of the other one in the background? Greg |

David
There is man in Southern Califorina who built the P-6-M Seamaster .. He built a cradle to do ROGs .I think there is an article in either RCjets International or electric flight, give me a day or two I'll dig something up. I know that he had a XB 47 that is now in the able hands of Tony F. Semper Fi Joe PS your craftsmanship looks outstanding |

David,
Excellent and ambitous project! The water flaps will be subject to pounding from the water, so I would suggest metal gear servos, one for each flap. Using two switch-enabled mixers on the same switch, mix rudder output uni-directionally to the two flap servos. This will allow you to use full travel of each servo for one direction, maximizing control arm movement, then you can use a servo arm hole close to the center for max torque. Another idea is to make a very shallow well for the flap with direct linkage connection to a sheet carbon fiber flap (no clevis, shortest possible horn - think landing gear strap). Then use a WTOB (water tight output bushing) to seal the control rod where it passes through the fuselage into the flap well. WTOB is made by Dubro or similar firm for boaters. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress. Bruce |

OUTSTANDING!!
I was just looking over my copy of the Squadron/ Signal publications aircraft number 74 "PBM Mariner In Action" book on this plane at breakfast just this morning and wondered if anyone has modeled this plane yet in "E" power. Only one name came to mind as to who would be the first and my guess was correct. Dave Plummer Dave, when you're ready for her maiden, drop me a line. I'm only 30 miles from you. I'd be more than happy to document the event. You truly do some outstanding work. Perry |

I'm only a few hours from the possible area of the maiden flight, and I would consider coming up, too!
I am looking forward to seeing Rudderman in the flesh, too ![]() Terry |

Hi Terry and Rudderman!
Thanks for the feedback - sorry I've been delinquent in responding: I started a simialr thread in the 'Jets' discussion group and got some helpful suggestions from some of the participants. You may want to know that Ray Cannon has previously built a model of another variant of this aircraft, and Ray has given me some very helpful suggestions on the hydro-flap actuation scheme. Some photos of Ray's models appeared in a back issue of EFI (can't remember the issue, but i can look it up if any one is interested - Ray build's beautiful models!!!). I'll certainly take you up on the offer, Ruddrman, and will keep you posted Terry. Rudderman: any chance you'd be willing to serve as test pilot of this monster, and a few other flying boats I have orbiting around in my building area (I have no realistic means of transport for these blasted models at the moment; my daughter sold her truck without checking with me ...!!!) Regards, Dave P. |

It would be a pleasure and an honor. I don't have a truck but I'll sure find a way to get your works of art to the pond. Please contact me at bnfernau@msn.com and I will send you my phone number. Perry |
