It's a bit early in the year to be making resolutions isn't it?


I have about 10 pounds I could do with losing. I need to be pro-active about it though. I notice if I cut out beer I lose about 10 lbs, but there seems little point in so drastic a measure.

Im down (in!)... Im weighing in at ~250 right now... I plan on getting with it here in the next few months and trying to reach about 210-220.

My football season starts late February and also I have a friend coming into town in march that I need to whoop on the racquetball court.

I dunno about weight loss (and I don't have a scale)... but I quit smoking (again) today. No resolution, it's just time. It's doing me no good, as are my eating habits and lack of exercise and such.

So hopefully weight loss will come along with it all.

Good luck to you Paul. You can do it! Raw sunflower seeds are good for munching on, I learned this in a quit smoking class at the American Lung Assoc. It worked for three weeks, till I broke up with my girlfriend. Stupid to start back. I had a lot of energy, was downright type A for those three weeks. I did things that really didn't need doing. Buzz, buzz.

I bought a scale from Amazon, just a mechanical one, with a big dial made by health-o-meter for around $12-15. It is more accurate than the $50 digital we had at the ex's house, as I weigh my self on it before getting weighed at the clinic. So it is as accurate as their's is at least.


One problem I have run against here is since I am cooking all my meals, and maybe eating out once every ten days, is that I tend to eat maybe a fruit for breakfast, then don't eat till suppertime, and make a big meal. One meal a day, then when I get hungry later, after feeling too full from my one meal, I eat some popcorn, or cookies, or gummy bears, or chocolate, or ice cream...... I need to figure out how to eat small amounts all day long, rather than the big meal thing.

Good luck on your quitting smoking! I hope that you make it, I have tried to quit so darn many times but always have relapsed.

TT,

Eating smaller amounts more often can help with weight loss and digestive problems. I went from 220 to 161 over a period of 12 months that way and I have been able to stay at that weight for 10 years now. I hope that you can get down to your target weight and stay there.

I'm about 15-20 over what I'd like to be, but even more difficult, about 3-4 inches thicker around the belly. If I don't tuck in my shirt, you'd never know, but back when I met my wife I had a serious six pack, and would like to be back to that. My son is also getting heavy enough that I need to built up a little to lift him high.

For over 6 months this year I was doing 40-45 minutes, 4-5 times a week on an exercise bike. I lost a bit of weight, but it did nothing for my belly. I just found out the local YMCA has a pool, so I might try and join them rather than a gym. From riding the board, my legs are just fine, everything else needs a bit of work.

TT, for snacks try things like celery and carrots. Most stores sell them pre cut in bite size pieces. Peanuts are pretty decent too. Of course, your diet book will tell you better than me. I like to do peanut butter on celery for a snack. Or popcorn with little butter or salt.

I may join you guys, but we don't have a scale in our house. That don't mean I can't exercise, I just can't brag about it (or is that lie about it?).

i've been up and down the scale so many times i can't count anymore. 203 is my heaviest. the least i've weighed as an adult was somewhere below 160 lbs. that's down from 190 lbs. (cause...i got deployed to a far off land). food was plentiful and i did eat but, drinking about 20 cups of coffee and not lifting a single weight, add a lot of stress and the pounds just fell off in seven months. i kept the weight off for a couple of years then ever so slowly, it has crept up.
last year i went on an "official" diet. lost 11lbs. in 5 weeks. all i did was cut out my one soda a day and cut way back on my meals. i did eat about 5 times a day though. mostly high protein stuff and had nothing after dinner. i also got back into running and biking (got my two mile run time down in the 13min. range).

what i tried to do on my diet was to raise my metabolism. keep the body burning calories even at rest. while i did eat more, i burned many more calories. well, one thing led to another and i gained almost all of it back. i need to get down around 170 (currently 185) and drop the waste line into the 32" to 33" range so as of right now, the diet has started.

I do not need a weight loss thread at present. Last June the Dr. put the scare of sugar in me with a high glucose reading. He said I was a few years away from Type II. I pretty much cut out all processed sugar that I could, and dropped about 8 lbs, and am maintaining nicely.

RD has a real good book on sugar and carbs. Perfect for you if you like fruit.

Im 360,yes that much and i want to get down to 220-230.

I am having band surgery in a few weeks as it is a last resort.

Good luck Tim, feel free to participate in the thread. I am personally too much of a wimp about surgery to consider that, but it is a personal choice, and I hope it works well for you. I support your right to your decision and hope everyone here also will do that. We get some strong opinions expressed in LTUP and hopefully this can be a more supportive and less contentious thread, much like the last weight loss thread.

Jerry, thanks for the advice. Having an ex wife and a sister who collectively have probably lost thousands of pounds and gained it back, I am of the school of eat a little bit of something you crave rather than a lot of something that is a substitute. I never by sugar free products like ice cream, I believe eating fake ice cream just makes you feel deprived rather than satisfied. As always, it is discipline that achieves the goal. My recent ability to eat what I want resulted in me overdoing it. Which leads to me having digestive problems again. I now realize it isn't worth it, plus, I have satisfied my having done without the tasty stuff, in fact, I am tired of overeating and that feeling that goes along with it.

When I was a teen I lost some weight on a fairly strange diet, I wouldn't eat all day, then would have a real chocolate malt when I got to work after school, it soothed the empty stomach. I would drink a diet drink that was a few ounces of grapefruit juice mixed with soda water, and would have a hamburger patty with lettuce and mustard later for dinner. The thing was, I got to a point after I started eating normal meals again, where I was keenly sensitive to being full enough, meaning I would often stop eating in mid bite, just putting down the fork that already was headed for my mouth. I need to get there again, and I believe it is a signal the stomach sends to the brain that we often ignore, being taught from childhood to clean our plates and all. Plus the action of eating one meal a day is mostly from being too lazy to clean up the dishes and such more than once a day, or to prepare foods I can eat later in smaller quantities. It sounds like you have found the perfect place for yourself, good going.

I remember the last thread, there was a bunch of folks who were supportive of each other. Really positive. It showed we could put aside differences and be supportive of each other despite political differences.

I've heard that just having a sip or three of water after just a few bites helps curb the want to continue eating.
I could sure be healthier with the maintained loss of a couple dozen pounds.

I favor the idea of taking long walks and or exercising to burn off the calories taken in excess.

I bet a bit of both reduction in intake and an increase in activity will be the key for many of us.

We fly largely construct and fly aircraft.

That's no burning of calories.
