minimum wing area for edf-50

hello people,
i'm designing a jet for an edf-50, does anyone know of a minimum wing area for this particular fan unit.

IMHO, wing loading is more important, as you are using a fan unit that has a higher thrust than effux veloc. as compared to units that are designed to propel higher wing loads and speed.
The power package should be less in wieght, or equal to the models weight with radio gear.

As proven by the Fan-Tastic Models Mig and Sabre, the "sweet spot" is about 150-160 square inches of wing area and an all up weight of about 7-7.5 oz for a single EDF 50.

Given that the EDF 50 is something of a low power unit, you really must fly on the wing and not the motor...

Hey thought I would mention this since there is intrest in more performance.. something I tried that worked well as a upgrade .. I took a Dare Design's KP 440 Electric fan unit.. and replaced the rotor with the 3blade gws rotor.. I had to reduce the dia of the blades to 44mm .. the 4.8v 180size motor with its carbon brushes and metal endbell proved to provide a mix of duration and extra power the lighter gws rotor was clearly the winner for reduceing the amps of the larger motor . Another plus was the prop was reduced in dia allowing it to produce higher top end speeds during level flight. I am going to buy the new rotor from gws that has more blades should be the choice for all out power. This motor screams on 5 cell nicads or 6cell nimh cells , less cells less weight.. you cant go over these limits this motor is a monster like the amp eating 300 size 6v motor it gobbles amps up at about 60% the rate of the 300 .. sorry dont have no hard data on that statement just going off the hip.... 150N's will fly this plane but not for long you must use 170n 270n 350n or 370nmh to 720nmh work very well for duration . and if you have some lilpoly cells your going tobe king with this fan set up on any of your current successfull jets now flying with the gws fan. here is a pic enjoy.

Thrust for Modified KP-44?

I have a KP-44 for the Aerographics Hawker Hunter kit. What kind of thrust were you getting on the modified KP-44 unit with 5 nicads? I would like to see if I could put a micro-RC system in the Hawker, but have also enlarged all the drawings and patterns for a 3" sized unit.

thanks for your help guys.
Unfortunately the kp-44 is more expensive here than the edf-50 so i don't think a conversion is on the cards.
using the smaller ducting however should make engines look more of a scale size

I dont have a digi scale to set up thrust test hower i do own a spring scale for postage up to 2pounds .. I will set something up and test it out for you . over 3oz on 5 nicads im sure. I would like to just buy the 180size 4.8v motors and make my own shroud and try some other dia rotors and blade counts. will keep you posted on my findings ....

3 oz would be a nice improvement

The stock edf 50's are rated at about 2.3 to 2.5 ounces on 7.2 volts, 3 amps, so 3 oz, particularly on a twin would be a nice increase.
