ASW 28 EPO from Hobby City - thoughts?

Going through the Hobby City site, I found this;

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8372

This looks like a fantastic deal. 2 meter, PNP, they even throw in 2 Lipo batteries! Sounds too good to be true - is it? Any thoughts on this particular sailplane, or on Hobby City in general?

Is this plane so new no one has seen it? What about thoughts on Hobby City in general? Would really like some info before moving on this.

Not my sort of thing, but it looks OK. The outer part of the wing is so small in chord that it won't be very effective IMO, but nice if you're into scale.

The battery isn't included BTW

Required;
Receiver/Transmitter 4Ch
1000-1300mAh 2S Lipoly.
Spare parts

I've only had good service from HC.

Oops didn't scroll down to see the free battery offer.

Not a lot of battery for a 2m.

Looks remarkably like the ST models ASW28. In Australia we can only get the complete PNP combo for $210. Mine should be here this week. I felt it was a good intro to e-gliding as I couldn't get a Multiplex Easyglider.

The spare fuse parts look an absolute bargain. Don't know if I will trust the included bits 'n' pieces. Under $35 US looks better.

I just ordered one too. Figured even if it's junk I can put the brushless setup and batteries in a MultiPlex EZ Glider. It would cost me more then $100 for the ESC motor and batteries so it's a no brainer.

Unfortunately the Futaba 2.4ghz RX will cost as much as the plane.

I got the RTF version here is Australia. Same as Hobby City but a 1000mah 2 cell. Maidened it on the slope to make sure the setup was right and I'm heading out to flatland thermal it this morning. So far I'm very happy with it considering what it is, what it cost and it's intended use.

Here's a video of the maiden

And here is a link to a thread we have running on the Australian forum

Just got back from some flatland action. Had 10-12 motor runs of about 30-40secs for a total of 6 minutes total run time on the motor. With some very light thermal conditions this gave a total flight time of between 25 and 30 minutes. There was another homebuilt eglider up which thermals really well and the ASW28 thermalled just about as good as it. I'll post back here later when I've charged the battery back up so I can let you know what it used in that 6 minutes.

Will this plane roll? Can you compare it to an easyglider?

I put back 998ma. So maybe 5 mminutes of motor run is best for battery life.

I can't really get it to roll the ailerons are just not big enough.

I've never flown an Easy Glider so I can't compare.

The maiden went well yesterday. This is a very graceful flyer. Seemed just a touched tail heavy with the stock setup, as I had to nose down a little sometimes to pull out of turns. I got about 6 minutes runtime per battery and that was in 38-degree F weather. I didn't try anything acrobatic or try to stress test the plane at all, but just enjoyed some relaxing flying with it. I bought this intending it for aerial photography and FPV but I think it's a little underpowered for that. So I'll enjoy it with the stock setup at least for a little while. Looking forward to trying it on the slope. Like Kamikaze, I've never flown an EasyGlider so I can't compare either.

The verdict: I'm glad I bought it.

Here's a short video clip. We didn't have a cam with zoom, so I only included the launch and a few passes where you could see the plane reasonably well. Without a zoom, the plane was just a speck in most of the footage. Unfortunately, the cam ran out of batteries just before the landing. It came in nice and stead and skipped a couple times on the snow, then slid across the snow about 100 feet before stopping.

If you are going to thermal this one I suggest you put some dark markings of some sort on the bottom of the wings. This morning I was up with another guy that had a Multiplex Easystar and we were hooking some boomers. But a couple of times when we were wayyyyy up and specking out I lost orientation of the ASW28. I also lost it completely once when I glanced away from the plane and had an anxious few seconds until I picked it up again. Those white wings just vanish against the sky at height especially in strong sunlight. The Orange stars and stripes do nothing. The guy with the easy star had painted the bottom of his wings a dark colour and while not super pretty it was very visible at the same height that I was losing the ASW28.
