The 2009 Futaba "XFC" Extreme Flight Championships will once again be held at the expansive AMA national flying site in Muncie Indiana from June 12th - 14th. June 11th will be reserved for Last Chance and Team qualifications. Applications are now being accepted for individual competitors. Qualified Non-US pilots are encouraged to apply and will be given first priority. To apply, simply snail mail a dvd or email a web link showing an example of your talents to Wendell Adkins at - "boomstrike@aol.com".

BREAKING NEWS!!!!

The Futaba Extreme Flight Championship has always strived to introduce new innovations in competition and crowd appeal with freestyle/3D flying. In 2008 the XFC introduced two new competition classes with the “Team” and “Night Fly”.
With the energy and excitement that was evident at the 2008 Night Fly competition in mind, the XFC has worked hard with the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) to introduce something new for 2009. Through careful consideration on both parties, we’re happy to announce that the Night Fly will have an added feature this year.
Along with an amazing fireworks show, imagine having the likes of Terry Hahn, Yuri Higuchi, Marcus Kim, Daniel Katzav, Jerry Smith and others dazzling you with a brilliant light and flying demo as never seen before. But wait… there’s more! Imagine the same show with pyrotechnics mounted on the planes and helis!!! That’s right, PYROTECHNICS! With the assistance of the AMA Executive Council, the XFC will be setting new standards for night flying, while introducing a new element into the XFC. The AMA has had a long standing regulation prohibiting pyrotechnics on aircraft. With new stringent regulations in place, this can now be achieved!
We (XFC) would like to thank the AMA for being receptive to this new concept, and working with the XFC to bring R/C modeling to the general public in a way that will start drawing National Media attention to the sport we love.

The Night Fly competition is not solely for the XFC competitors. If you feel like you can “hang” with the big boys and have some ideas for Night Flying, please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss it with you. It is limited to 12 competitors however!! There are a couple restrictions that are in affect…. The plane has to be at least 80” in span, but does not have to be “scale”. The Heli’s need to be a .50 sized heli or larger.


Below are this years required maneuvers -

2009 XFC Helicopter Known Maneuvers

Tumbling Reversing Vertical Diamond

Model begins from a hover directly in front of the pilot oriented nose right or left and parallel to the flight-line. Model performs one complete forward tumble while climbing up and away from the starting point at a 45 degree angle remaining parallel to the flight-line. With minimal hesitation the model then performs a complete backward tumble, again at a 45 degree upward angle, parallel to the flight-line, to a point directly above the starting point. The model then performs a second complete forward tumble downward at a 45 degree angle to a point directly opposite the end point of the first tumble. Model then performs a second backward tumble, again at a 45 degree downward angle, back to the original starting point. This completes the first half of the figure. The second half of the maneuver is identical to the first with the following exceptions - it begins with a backward tumble and reverses the path (retraces first diamond but in the opposite direction) ending once again at the starting position. This figure forms the shape of a four sided symmetrical diamond when viewed from the side.

Points will be deducted for the following reasons:

• Rate of tumbling not constant
• Figure not centered and symmetrical
• Lines not straight and model not level at stops
• Top/bottom and left/right of figure not equal in size
• Model drifts in or out from flight-line during maneuver

Backwards Reversing Rolling Circle

Model flies straight and level (from right or left) parallel to the flight-line backwards. As the model crosses the centerline it immediately begins a backwards rolling circle away from the pilot. As the model completes the first half of the circle, the direction of roll reverses, without hesitation, to the opposite direction for the second half of the rolling circle.

Points will be deducted for the following reasons:

• Circle not centered on pilot’s position
• Rolling not at a constant rate and axial
• Circle halves are not symmetrical
• Models pitch and yaw attitudes fluctuate during roll reversal
• Altitude fluctuates while rolling


Reversing Rainbow Star

Model begins pirouetting at a constant rate (right or left) while upright in a hover located approximately 20m to the right or left of the centerline. Model performs a rainbow arc (continuing to pirouette) of approximately 50m in length at an angle away from the flight-line that ends at a point along the centerline. The model then pauses briefly inverted at the same altitude as the start. With minimal hesitation the model reverses direction of pirouetting and performs a second equal length rainbow arc, back at an angle toward the flight-line, ending at an equal/opposite point as the start, pausing upright. The model once again reverses direction of pirouetting and performs a third diagonal rainbow arc, at a diagonal angle away from the flight-line to a point slightly wider than the starting point, pausing inverted once again at its end. The model again reverses direction of pirouetting and completes a fourth rainbow arc, parallel to the flight-line, to an equal distance opposite the centerline, ending upright. The model then reverses direction of pirouetting and performs a fifth and final rainbow arc back to the starting point, ending inverted. This figure is comprised of 5 pirouetting arcs that follow the form of a closed symmetrical 5 pointed star when viewed from above.

Points will be deducted for the following reasons:

• Rainbows not symmetrical and equal in length/height
• Rate of pirouetting not constant
• Arc starts and stops not at same altitude
• Figure not centered over central point in front of pilot
• Entire maneuver not parallel to flight-line

In an effort to increase the competitive excitement for 2009, the requirement for music and emphasis on choreography have been eliminated from the unknown rounds. Music may be used but is optional. Music is still required for the known rounds.

The following top finishers from 2008 all have standing invitations to return to XFC in 2009.

Also congratulations to IRCHA Amateur National (IAN) Champion Nathaniel Rice who will also be going toe to toe with the Worlds best pilots.

Open flying using 2.4 radio systems will also be available as last year.

Come and see first hand why the XFC is often imitated but never duplicated.

Soo, the pilots aircraft are still fully covered by AMA insurrance with the pyrotechnics?

And too bad it's more then 4,000 miles away, otherwise I would for sure be comming out to see it.

I know the Night Fly and fireworks won't start until its dark, but does anybody know around when the daytime flying will end? On the site it says the competition starts at 8am, but it doesn't say when they finish up for the day.

I'm trying to figure out if there will be any downtime before the night flying starts.

all depends on how fast it gets moving and stays moving and on weather. 4pm to 5pm probably, then the band starts till dark.

Went to XFC last year if you guys Go it is a Great Show Good Luck To Nick Maxwell. The only Pilot there last year that flew both heli and Planes.

Daytime flying normally finishes around 5 pm. On Saturday the band will start at 6 pm and play until 9 pm. The night fly should start about 9:30 with the fireworks show right after that.

So, very little downtime on Saturday.

This will be my first time at XFC, can't wait! I hope the weather is good too. My wife and I will bring a few lawn chairs and a cooler - the show should be great!

Thanks Steve, that's exactly what I wanted to know. My wife and son (1.5years old) and I will be there. We got a hotel for the night so he can we can get him out of the sun for a while and let him take a nap.

The only downside is I don't think he will enjoy watching me fly my BCX2 outback as much after he sees how it supposed to be done

It is going to be very hard to top what everyone will see on Saturday, anywhere or by anyone. Saturday may very well end up being the biggest, most exciting show ever put on by a bunch of model aircraft!

I'm on site right now watching the pilots tents being put up.

Raining here today as more pilots are arriving.

I'm the AMA Flying Site Host for the month of June so I'm here for the duration.

Weather is supposed to be good (better at 40% rain chance) after today. 30% rain chance Sunday.

I got some good pictures of Ido practicing last Sunday.
