Converting Skysport 6 to 2.4Ghz

Just got in the DIY Assan modules, and I got an itch to convert my old dusty Futaba Skysport 6.

First I removed 4 screws on the back cover, and removed the 72Mzh crystal and original Aerial.

I located the +, - and Signal connection on the Trainer Plug PCB

Next I soldered in the wires, on the back side of the Trainer Plug PCB,

You can solder the wires to any of the 2 points shown, keep it clean.

The Assan DIY 2.4GHz module fits snugly in between the sticks.under the Trainer Plug PCB. (PCB is not shown in this picture)

There are a few pointy wire guides that need to be broken off for the Module to fit

The new "Shorty" aerial that comes with the DIY kit, fits perfectly in place of the old aerail, simply tighten the nuts down on both sides of the plastic case. and screw in the new short Aerial.

Once this is done, place the Trainer Plug PCB back in it's original spot.
some moving around of wires may be needed to get it to stay. It all should fit perfect without compressing on any other component.

If you are particular about the indicator light, you may want to rewire its position to the outside of the radio. I left mine alone, but I will drill a small hole in the case to see it, when I am binding new RX's. Its not needed though since the module will sound a destinctive tones duing this procedure anyway.

UPDATE: I CAN SEE THE LIGHT THROUGH THE TRIM SLIDERS, NO NEED TO DRILL.

Here you see a finished 2.4Ghz SKYSPORT 6 with a 3ch RX, complete for $100 and 20 minutes of labor.

($100 covers the module, new Areial and a 3ch or 6ch RX)

no problem, I think the same can be done for many other radios, as long as there is enough room to mount the 12mm x 32mm x 55mm 2.4Ghz RF module inside

Hi, I've seen you transformation to your ff6, and I wonder if you are satisfied with the 8XD Module, i.e. does is offer full range? have you done any test?
Any lockouts so far?

How do you managed to stop the 72Mhz(or 35mhz) RF from transmitting, just removed the crystal? is that enough? does it stop the RF from power consuming?

I want to make myself the same upgrade but keeping the the old RF module available for any time I want to change. and if removing the crystal is the only solution the is Ok for me.

Best Regards,

Sorry for slow reply, I dont visit this thread often.

I have Zero problems with this radio, most recently it was used with a small Helicopter without any issues.

All you have to do is remove the crystal to stop 72Mhz, I have also seen some people instal a switch, to turn off/on 72Mhz and use it again later with their 72MHz RX's

Hello,

In old days I was said that the transmitter should not be turned on without extended aerial.
Otherwise the energy generated by RF module would not dissipate and overheat some electronic component on it.

Does anybody know if removing the cristal would prevent enengy consumption / overheat?

SUPI7:
How would you install a switch on this radio to turn off the RF?

Regards,

Removing the crystal stops the oscillation. That's all you need.
