New launch method

This week there were a couple of fliers with their DLG's and a device that looked like a crossbow with surgical tubing and a rail, a catapult. They were getting some really high launches but when they tried a conventional sail plane they blew up the wing. The rail is about 12' long and it puts the DLG's way up there. Has anyone else had too much time on their hands and done something like this?

Any photos of this contraption? This is what I've been looking for, a crossbow type catapult to launch my SAL gliders in the air.

Better yet, get a video of a "crossbow" launch!

I assume that this is a two-man method - correct?

He is going to build a bigger one and says he will take pictures. I think others are coming up with their own design. It's just some wood and tubing. I just wonder why something like this has not shown up before.

No doubt... I want to build something small enough, handheld type or just like a crossbow, to launch my ST-SALG into the air.

So the plane slides on a set of rails?

Doesn't sound too good for it.

I think a small zoom launch would be better.
(and smaller and lighter, too.)

This guy is using a set of rails and a bungee to launch a very big electric powered flying wing

For a small plane the bungee works fine from a hand toss. I use about 15 feet of 1/4 inch surgical tubing and about 25 feet of string to make a mini hi-start. Gets a HL model up to decent height. With a hard to launch e-power model I use just the rubber and start the motor after the bungee drops a way.

Why build a crossbow???

It's like a high start without the string.

Lots of speed, rather than height.

In approx 1975 we used 100 ft of 1/4" surgical tubing to launch 60" foam slope racers. Wooden and PVC plane holder launchers, as stated above have been around for a very long time, early oned for Zagi's, but often used for scale electrics and pylon racers to get them to speed. any small plane would work provided that their wings did not fold and the plane could be trimmed to fly straight out to get speed rather than altitude, then have the pull up. A small bungee with a towline probably gets you higher if you did a nice zoom tow.
