I have the DG1000-E & Mav has the ASW28-E from hobby-city that me-wantee mentioned above.

As for quality i honestly cant fault either of them & even with our low $$$ it's still a very good buy.

I'm using a HET 600-34 motor, 4s 2200mah lipo & 10x6 graupner which pulls 38amps static. This would be a perfect match for either models. Mav uses a 1100kv outrunner from HC, 11x6 prop & to balance uses two 3s 2100mah lipos. Mavs ASW weighs about 1.8kgs & my DG weighs 1.5kgs. So far Mav can stay in a thermal but cant climb with it & sais it's sensational on the slope.

I have flown both & they feel much the same & will land slow enough without flaps or spoilers.

The only thing to watch out for is they will both tip-stall at too slow speeds which i'm not used to, maybe it has something to do with it being scale i'm not sure, all my models (not scale) are designed to behave. As long as you keep it moving it's not a problem but it is a model you have to fly so to speak.

One more thing to watch out for if your putting a prop on it is make sure you programe your esc to hard brake otherwise it will wind-mill & act like a big air brake & will induce a tip stall.

Hi Steve. I read your posts on the other asw 28 glass thread. You seem to already have, ... the style of planes, that I am considering as new plane candidates.

I have flown two 55" harbor freight wild hawks (brushed, 1300mah 7s ni-mh, 3 ch., $65 RTF) as a new first time rc pilot, since July 2008.

Being a new rc pilot, foam is preferred over glass, in accidental hard landings (?).

I would be interested in your thoughts on the

ST Foam DG1000

(anyone speak German? How much is it, in usa $?)

The ST DG1000 features retractable motor system (rms), 3s 1300 mah lipo, brushless motor, 79", 5ch with ailerons and rms, 26 ozs, which is under the "2 lb max limit" to qualify's for the lower cost half price $29 park ama membership. I am an AMA "park" member through 2009.

A few personal opinions, asw28 vs. dg1000:

- of the heavier hobby city glass models, I like the asw28 look best.

- of the foam st models (all real life sight unseen), I think I may like the st dg1000 best,

... as the st dg1000 has a longer flying 3s lipo battery (? would 3s fly longer in a 26 oz. st dg1000, than 2s in a lighter 18 oz st asw28?),

... the weight is a bit heavier at 26 oz which allows for a more powerful motor, bigger 3s battery, maybe longer (?) flights, and better flying in windier conditions,

... the heavier 26.5 oz. weight satisfies the "under 2 lb. requirement" for a lower priced "park" $29 AMA membership,

... the st dg1000 adds the retractable motor with a fifth channel, giving a cool no motor smooth glider look, yet having the stealth like re- appearing/disappearing prop power to get to high altitudes fast without the need for a slope or bungee cord,

... the top mounted st dg1000 prop may be less vulnerable to breakage, than the front mounted st asw28 prop,

... the white trim on the st dg1000 cock pit and prop are more pleasing to my eye, than the blue decals and black trim on the st asw28 cockpit and prop (interestingly, the grey & white colors on the hobby city 99" glass asw28 is outstanding),

... and both st models have, a) foam (a new pilots golden parachute crash protection), and b) ailerons, something new vs. my current 3ch planes.

Conversely,
the st dg1000 extra 5th ch. new newfangled retrackable motor system, ... may add a degree of complexity, that may reduce reliability and increase vulnerability when crashed, increasing fix time/cost. Note the manual's prop housing loose transmission belt tightening instructions. ... Additionally, 5 ch. transmitters generally cost more 4 ch. transmitters. ... The st asw28's black trim on the cockpit cover edge could likely be painted white if desired, and the blue decals simply left off, to let it look more like the sharp looking hobby city glass 99" asw28.


Which of the two st foam glider planes,
- may be better for thermals?
- may have longer flight times?
- may glide/fly/land better overall?

Anyone
- find additional foam ST DG1000 photos, videos?
- know vendors who ship/sell the st dg1000 to usa?
- seen a foam ST DG1000 price in usa $?

Presently, Hobby City ships the foam st asw28, ... but 'not' the foam st dg1000, ... to usa. Any other vendors selling either of these, to usa?

as Mine are all glass I could not tell you which of the foam ones would be better suited for your needs ,but the performance of the glass 28 is in my opinion better suited to aerobatic flight than the 1000 which would have the better thermal ability
mine are pure slope and both land hot as they have no spoilers or flaps and using spoileron on them only produces an ugly aerodynamic tuck of the wings when deployed (meaning the wing bends down and takes up anhederal. On top of that it didnt slow them down ) as to the foam both quoted weight would float but I'd probably
go for the 28 to give you the most all round performace ,

The foam 28 only has a 2s 1300 mah lipo.

What do you est its flight time?

Is that enough power to climb vertical?

If an after market 3s 1300 mah were used, est flight time and would it burn up the motor? Would the 3s be too heavy for the 18 oz foam model asw28 to fly/glide right?

Dont know about the electric side of it I'm purely a slope flyer but I'm sure the electricy guys here will give you the good info . Mine are in the 70 to 80 oz range which is slightly heavier than your average park flyer

P.S looking at the stats for the 28 I'd put it in the same catergory as a Mutiplex easy glider or and easy star enough power for about 10 to 15 minutes on power but then you dont need power when you crack those thermals and the weight of these things would make them floaters.

My foam ST models ASW28 arrives tomorrow. I have a 3S 1000 lipo and will test the amp draw as well as give a flight report on both batteries (hopefully if the weather is kind) when it arrives.

If you are near a scale, would also be interested in the stock battery weight, & which battery yours came with, and your 3s battery weight.

For example, hobby city ships it with a 1300 mah 2s lipo, but the manual specs say, as I recall, it can take a 1000 or 1300 mah 2s lipo.

If you don't have a scale, that's ok.

I'm still interested in:
- how you find the two batteries fly the asw28,
- the flight times,
- to what extend they allow vertical climb,
- approx. how long it takes them to get high in the sky from launch,
- start motor, set to full speed, launch, for twenty seconds climb as high as possible, turn motor off, and time-clock total time from launch to glide ground touch down,
- landing speed (fast, slow, med, ...)
- quality of the glide flight,
- how it flys' right out of the box,
- tip stall tendency (as some mentioned on the glass asw28 and dg1000,
- etc.

The one I've ordered has a 1000mAH 2S lipo. I had a dig around and I have a 3S 1000 mAh 20/30c lipo @ 94grams and a 3S 1300 mAh 20/30c lipo at 119.4grams. I also found a 2S 1200 mAh lipo at 47.7g.The 3S batteries I have here are roughly double the weight. Hopefully the battery tray is large enough, or I guess it's not a bit deal to dig out some foam.

I really don't know how it will go on 3S. I imagine it's built to a price (cheap) so think the 3S may be too much for the BL motor. I suppose we have to consider it's purpose - mainly as a beginners e-glider. It's no hotliner and is priced accordingly. Rest assured though, I will do some 'durability' testing of the power system with the 3S - purely for the benefit of the thread .

I'll take a white 100% one thanks!!

Ok, the stock 1000 7.4 mAh lipo weighs 57.6grams with deans connector. Quality wise it's what I would expect for a cheap foamie.

Will give it a throw tomorrow morning if the rain holds off.

I like the idea of the DG1000, but the price is $487AUD + shipping for a foamie!

The ASW-28 is only $210AUD. So a folding prop is $277? I think not.
