Gotta love that EagleTree system! Mine's telling me things I would've never dreamed. Of course, some of what it reveals is rather baffling too! *LOL* I get about as much fun out've reading & analyzing flight data as I do out of flying the planes! Seems almost 'wrong', in a way -- color me nerd.

Well, then I am a nerd too then! Agonizing over the numbers and details is a happy time for me too!

I read something today from an instruction sheet that seems to contradict something I was told earlier, re # of poles in a BL motor.
The instructions say, "Usually the pair number of magnets on rotor is poles. If you count 14pcs magnet on the rotor shell, then you should select 7 P(Poles)", which presumably translates simply to, "Number of magnets is twice the number of poles".

True or not?

Not correct, but then again, it is not what they meant. This is what it should say:
"You should select 7 Pairs"

Motormagnetpoles always come in two's, statorpoles (the teeth) always come in three's.
See these motor animations and simulations, very instructive:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...ght=anim+simul

Controller max.rpm. limit depends on computer processing power on board. The limit is specced for 2-magnetpole motors. Say a controller can handle 140krpm . It can do that for a 2-magnetpole/1-pole-pair motor. It can handle 70krpm for a 4-magnetpole/2polepair motor ... and it can handle 20krpm for a 14-magnetpole/7polepair motor. To the controller, there's no difference between those motors, controller does not care about number of magnetpoles. But people do care about rpm. to calculate the correct rpm, the user must enter a number.
So, to 'know' the actual shaft rpm the motor is running at, the ESC must divide the electrical rpm by seven, that's the number that particular manufacturer wants you to enter.

Thanks Ron....but many (most?) of the links on that reference page are not working. I see the thread is a bit long of tooth now (old)....perhaps an update would be worth the while if you refer to it regularly, if the resources are still available?

It'd be nice to know where these simulations come from to give credit to the sources, eh? Also, to know if the images can be copied and used in other venues.

Um...there are no links to simulations in that thread. Why do you want us to go there?

To acquaint us with a radical new building technique, he is making airplanes out of some kind of wood! No foam at all as near as I can tell...

Yeah, this guy was so proud of his effort he posted all over the place begging people to come look at his build thread. Ahh, to be newbie and have absolutely no sense of shame...
