Fluffy flights

I got a chance to really fly the Fluffy Yak today with the new 15 gram Hacker motor.

This is my best Yak yet. The .9# 9mm wire cut foam has an excellent combination of stiffness and low weight. It still seems to be plenty tough too. Took some bad hits today with only minimal damage which was "repaired on the spot" with Welders.

Roll authority was great at all speed. I think the full thickness foam ailerons were plenty stiff and with the generous deflections, the roll authority left nothing to be desired.

The 15 gram Hacker really "pulled it's weight". It is an excellent match for the light weight build. To my pleasant surprise this little gem would pull my 138 gram Yak out of a hover with authority. It is also much quieter than it's bigger brother the 21 gram Hacker.

I am very pleased with this build and I can now fully recommend the lighter foam for building this plane for those striving for a very light indoor plane.

Several of my flying buddies got to fly the Fluffy Yak today too. I think they were all impressed with this plane...I hope they will comment too.

Anyone in the US know where to get .9# foam? I might have to go this route.

Good luck, I really enjoyed that plane!

I've got 3 Rhino 460s and 3 Rhino 360s coming to see which ones I like best. I'll probably go with the 360s since that seems to be the hot setup but sometimes extra runtime is nice also. I went with the 2s packs.

I can't wait! Definitely going to have to make it to the next indoor.

Diggs,

PM Motorhead on the foam. I am planning on coming to SEFF this year. I might be able to bring some with me if you are not in a hurry. I am sure motorhead would ship some as well.

For what it is worth, Dan, you might just try rewinding the HC hacker clone, and get a lot more power out of it than you are getting stock. I recently re-rewound the 10g 1811 hxt motor I had, and with 15t of 28awg and a gws6030, it pulled my 110g yak54 HARD. It weighs 15g with the mount, connector and prop. My but dyno says at least 175g thrust with a 2s360 rhino. A full battery would hover it at half throttle. I scrapped the airframe to put the guts in my new 75g mini though.

And here is my newest yak doing it's thing. I decided to do what I call the "Yak classic". All 9mm 1.3# foam. I made it very stiff (which means heavy). I have a bunch of 3s 610mah batteries not being used, so I made it specifically to handle those batteries. It came out at 180g w/o battery, so heavy, but fun. Enjoy

180g isn't so heavy. I think that's what my "Skinny Yak" came out to be.

EPP Yak55 Noggin Cam Video

This is a short picture in picture video clip of the noggin cam filming a flight of the EPP Yak55. The main screen is a Pentax Optio S5Z mounted to a baseball cap. The smaller video in the lower right hand corner was a handheld video by leadfeather.

19 inch miniyak

Maidened my newest miniyak last night at the Little Rock indoor fly.

19 inch wing span.
6mm 1.3 lb/f3 epp.
Hobby city 1400-3000kv motor
5x3 gws dd.
6300 reciever.
3 Blue Arrow 2.5 gm servos.
x7 speed controll.
240mah 2 cell lipo.

all up weight of 60 grams.

Flew great, very manuverable in the small gym we have use of.

Much more traffic friendly than 30+ inch 3D planes.

Better i thank than my 22 inch version.

I'm going to try a 1 cell motor which is what i had planned for.

Cheers

Cant wait to cut one out of .9 lb foam.

Great video Mark and Dan!

The yak looks great in the air Mark, and that was a sweet tail drag you snuck in at 2:12!
