Image Collection of my Planes in Flight

I'm fortunate to have a professional photographer in my club who generally shows up on Sundays for photographing club members' planes in flight, so I figured I'd keep a collection of photos of my planes in flight within this blog.

Here are some other planes that I own that haven't been photographed in flight yet (I'll add them as soon as the in-flight photos surface)...

* F-27B Stryker (built for speed with a Mega 16/25/4 motor on a 7x7 prop)
* R2Hobbies Electric Pitts (just finished assembling in Dec. 2008)
* Hobby-Lobby Thunderbird EDF with custom Wicked EDF 4800kV motor
* Ballistic Projeti with ARC 38-47-1.5 turn motor (still not completed)
* Splash 3D flying hydro boat with Hacker A30-22S brushless outrunner
* Miss Hanger One flying hydro with LS Purple Peril motor

First things first, my P-51D Mustang.

Specs:
0.60 sized model P-51D Mustang (Nitroplanes model)
Engine: Saito FA-100 4-stroke
Weight: Approximately 7.5 pounds AUW
Wing span: 67"
Retractable gear
Built: Spring of 2007

My FunJets

I own 2 of these, both built for 100mph+ speeds. The FunJet is REALLY a blast to fly. You can build them slow and docile for park flying, or fast and ballistic for impressing the crowds. I chose the latter for both . I always take at least one FunJet to the field along with another electric, or with one of my glow-powered planes. They are also perfect for flying in my backyard, but I prefer flying at the field where the rest of my club members fly.

Both FunJets can hit speeds of over 100mph in flight, and are optimally flown on a 3S 2200mAh battery, which gives these Funjets ideal weight AUW for both ballistic and docile flight.

Here are the specs for each FunJet:

Red/Yellow model:
Motor: MicroDAN 2505-SPEED brushless outrunner
ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix 35-Amp ESC
Servos: Hitec HS-65 Carbonite
Power Usage WOT on 3S: ~360 Watts, 33 Amps
Top speed (clocked by Lidar): 103mph in a shallow dive

Yellow/Black model:
Motor: ARC 28-37-2.5 turn brushless inrunner
ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix 45-Amp ESC
Servos: Hitec HS-65 Carbonite
Power Usage WOT on 3S: 445 Watts, ~41 Amps
Top speed (clocked by Lidar): 115mph ground speed (level)

In-flight video (filmed during January, 2009) can be found here - this video is in WMV format and was taken using the FlyCamOne2, strapped to my red/yellow FunJet using rubber bands and hunter's hand warmers.

My Great Planes Venus II (0.60 size)

I won the Great Planes ARF Venus II model at one of my club's flying events in July 2007, and built it during early 2008 so I could have it flying by Spring of '08. The Venus II came in 2 flavors - 0.40 and 0.60 sized.

The Venus II ARF was relatively easy to assemble, and it flies great. It's technically a pattern plane, great for practicing those aerobatics, and flies very smoothly and tracks perfectly in loops and rolls. It's a great flier.

Venus II Specs:

0.60 sized
Engine: Magnum XL 0.91 2-stroke
Wing span: 66"
Weight: about 8.5 lbs. AUW

Hk-450(gt)

Wanted a more high-performance HK-450, so I loaded it with a Scorpion HK-2221-6 V2 motor, metal geared servos, a CNC precision V3 all-metal tail from XMSeller, and the $28 CNC metal head from HobbyKing. It flies significantly better than the plastic HK (shown in the above post), the precision tail made a huge difference. I also added Align T-Rex 500 skids for improved tail clearance and for extra room to mount a camera underneath the fuse.

Motor: Scorpion HK-2221-6 V2
ESC: Phoenix 60-Amp w/external Turnigy 5A BEC
Servos: 3 x HXT MG14 (cyclic), GWS Park HPX-f tail servo
Gyro: G401B
Upgraded parts: XMSeller (aka CNCHelicopter) precision CNC tail V3, carbon fiber tail boom, Align T-Rex 500 skids, CNC metal head from HobbyKing

I like to strap my Sony Webbie 1080p onto this heli (since it has lots o' power) to shoot video outdoors and indoors. The high head speed (~3200 RPMs) is great for stable hovering in windy conditions.

Hk-500gt

Nabbed the HK-500GT from HobbyCity back in October 2009 in the pursuit of a larger more stable heli platform, and must say it's now my favorite heli to fly outdoors, it does great in the high winds that we have in WNY.

Other than the motor, most of the parts were purchased from HobbyKing, total price tag to get this heli into the air was approximately $289.

Motor: Scorpion HK-3026-1600Kv
ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix 80-Amp w/external Turnigy 5A BEC
Servos: 4 x TowerPro 930MG Digital
Gyro: G401B
Blades: Align Carbon Fiber 425mm (not pictured)
Upgraded Parts: Align feathering shaft, main shaft, and gears.

JPower AMX EDF 64mm

The AMX is a great-looking EDF jet made entirely of durable EPS foam. Bought the airframe only during a hobby-lobby crash sale and loaded it with a DonsRC Wicked 4800Kv outrunner and a 45-Amp Castle Phoenix ESC which equates to a nice cruising speed of about 75-80mph at WOT. Here are some in-flight photos of the AMX...

Motor: DonsRC Wicked 4800Kv outrunner
ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix 45-Amp
Servos: HXT900
Fan: 5-blade 64mm Alpha EDF

Hk-250gt

Upgraded HK-250GT heli in flight. Based off the T-Rex 250, this is a perfect-sized heli for flying indoors. They are a pain to build/assemble because of the tiny screws and limited room for running wiring inside the frame, but the final result was worth the effort.

I had issues with the stock tail, it just had too much slop as well as other mysterious binding issues that I couldn't work out without totally replacing the entire tail assembly with the metal Align T-Rex 250 SE tail unit (which included the tail shaft, control lever, grips, and the tail mount). The Align T-Rex 250 SE tail grips included counter-weights built-into the grips which takes load off the servo and makes for much smoother tail movement.

Power Setup:
Scorpion HK-2206-3900Kv motor
ESC: Castle Phoenix 35 Amp
Servos: 3 x HXT900 cyclic, INO-LAB HK-D201HB Digital tail servo
Battery: Zippy 3S 1000mAh 15C and 25C LiPo packs

Upgraded parts: T-Rex 250 SE Align metal tail unit, Align main shaft, Align main gear, Align boom, Align feathering shaft, Align belt, Align 205D carbon fiber blades, Fusuno extra-wide fiberglass canopy
