56" Piper Pawnee for Towing Gliders and Banners - Tony 65x55 Design

Hi All:

I've been having a blast making Tony's Pawnee:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...92#post8249892

and decided to build a slightly larger version to tow gliders and banners with...not that I've done that before, but it sounded like a good idea.

Here's some build pics and some videos of it doing the banner test. I used some white kitchen garbage bags with fishing weights on the bottom edge. If anyone has any info on how to make the banners more efficient please let me know.

I've built a glider to tow behind her out of a foam chuck gliders, "Flying Eagle" $6.99 @ Walmart, and will post video of it as soon as I can get my buddy out to fly the glider.

This is too much fun! Thanks for the great plane Tony.

PS

P.S. I wanted to start a separate threat dedicated to Pawnee towing applications...please share your experiences

Towing Banner Videos:

Maiden (I had no clue whether it would work and had my finger on the release toggle the whole takeoff)

Foamie Piper Pawnee Tug with Test Ad Banner (1 min 45 sec)

That worked...let's try the larger banner:

Banner Pull Final Test (3 min 9 sec)

More fun and games:

Starting with the monobloc and cutting out the parts

I use spray on glue to attach all the parts to the film side of the foam. After cutting, peel off the paper and the film comes off usually too...bonus.

I reinforce landing gear area with balsa and ply on sides. Also add ply nuts for the wing holddowns.

Now the Wing

I use two arrow shafts from Walmart...they were even on sale this week for $5 each and some hardwood I cut down to about 3/16" of an inch for the spar connector. 5 min epoxy and Goop puts them together.

Adding the side skins to the fuse

I use water-based contact cement to laminate the foam...takes a little longer to dry, but is solid.

I use tape to align the tail before gluing on sides to make sure the tail is even steven.

Landing Gear

Braised a cross member on main 1/8" wire to prevent gear from splitting sides of plane.

Rear gear inserted into tube and then bent over for rear angle and axle

Tow release mechanism

I was thinking wakeboard tower when I build this using a 5mm round CF tube that inserts into a wood base...works great...only 3/8 oz with 5 gm servo. Removes easily.
