Thanks for the offer. But I have Compufoil, and can convert any in the library to .dxf., and I can modify any airfoil 1000 ways. So If I knew what it looked like (and it looks like maybe I will), no problem duplicating it or finding one close to it.

No further activity. I'm just checking in and letting you all know that in a few days, I'll be away from drawing and building until March. I'll update you all at that time. I'm still waiting for more detailed information. I should have better documentation at that time.

Solitiaryman,... OH BOY! Great news!. Yes, I'm in Vietnam now. I'll be back at my building board in just a few days. Looks like I'll be building several planes at once to catch up,... these vacations are take away too much building time.

Up early in the morning recovering from jet lag,... what to do?,... Draw! Yeah baby! I took the above factory 3 view and carefully checked and corrected my earlier drawing. Here's what I have so far. All is subject to change with additional information information. Airfoil is definately subject to change. It's started out as a thickened SD8040. Then I saw the 3 view and I thickened it some more. I'm not sure if I will stay with it,... and also I'm thinking of transitioning to a thinner airfoil at the tips. Right now, it's guess work.
Looking at the 3-view, I'm thinking it might have spoilers on the bottom surface of the wings too, well fwd of the top spoilers. Ugh,... that'd be a lot more work,... awaiting more information. Last edited by No Step; Mar 03, 2009 at 01:48 PM. |

I have a feeling that the Mu23 has DFS type airbrakes...I cant find the image right now but in one of the (few) images it shows a partially extended airbrake.... EDIT What a lemon I am! The above 3 view shows it clearly as DFS type. The airbrakes are on both upper and lower surfaces. EDIT#2 This http://scalesoaring.co.uk/VINTAGE/Do...es/3View_1.jpg shows the DFS airbrake nicely on the Weihe. Last edited by GeeW; Mar 03, 2009 at 02:32 PM. |

The nice thing about that type of airbrake (full size) is the low operating forces compared to the Schemp Hirth type as per K-13. Mind you, that linkage and geometry will keep you quiet for a while! Gordon |

Hopefully there's enough room to put a small servo in the middle with a dual servo arm and just run adjustable linkage fore and aft (actually just one would need to be adjustable). That'll be my plan.

I understand that the Mu airfoil was designed by Egon Scheibe when he was a student at Munchen. It was used for all the non-laminar flow Mu sailplanes from at least the Mu-13, and on a lot of Scheibe sailplanes and motorgliders before the SF-34. Several years ago, I got the plans for the Mu-17 from Akaflieg Munchen. No airfoil coordinates were included. They said to measure a Bergfalke. Luckily, there was one nearby. I'll dig the coordinates up if you'd like. The section has a large LE radius and slight undercamber and is about 13% thick as I recall. It would be very easy to build with a plywood wrapped D box LE. However, it wouldn't be very good on a model.

Fred, welcome back!
You started this thread when we were in Costa Rica (I think), and I found it just now sitting here in warm, pleasant Medellín. Looks like Noel is helping you out competently, and I'd like to offer my help also. So if you'd like me to correspond with Akaflieg München (or any other German source) on your behalf, please let me know. This is a great project, and knowing you, it'll turn out great. For your creativity and can-do approach to tasks, I've always looked up to, and not just because I'm a SLS (short little sh... : ) Dieter Mahlein, ShredAir |
