New Convair Pogo
Hello, I though I would share one of my projects, a 1/10 scale Convair Pogo.
I have the plug for the airframe finished, and hope to be testing the power system soon. First iteration of this sysyem will use/test 2- 63/54/250kv motors, contrarotating with 2- 3 blade 20"x 5&6 pitch 3 blade props {Zinger Multiblade} I'm still waiting on the special machined shaft for the motors and the props, then I can test it on a stand. And the dreaded spinner... i have to make that. Making it is easy, it's the attachment that will be some work, but the spinner is for later I also had a transmission designed {see PDF file}, Although cool I like the simplicity of the 2 outrunners. And the tranny cost more to build than the 2 motors batteries esc's Please dont post to tell me how it cant and wont work, impossible to control etc

Hi
A beautiful thing with its contrarotating blades and good looks
A true VTOL Im trying to get the tailsitters to land a little better, its hard Im going more hardcore VTOL though , its challenging |

Hi,
Thanks for the comments. Actually with the CG way back I'm thinking it should be fairly easy to hover, at least if you can hover airplanes well. and gyros of course would help, now they are cheap enough to use on everything Now transitions, thats the real question. Cant test those on a stand either. Gonna go through a few probably before we get that one down, but thats what molds are for. Yes this is very experimental

Yes
I always found on Talilsitters that big Dia props are best and lots of throw to control the hover and moderate, to back CG not too far back
Im setting up to charge 7 batteries at once , I fly a lot of Tailsitter hours Have you plane hover experience ? It will help , |

I can hover a plane but not very good yet. I have an expert hover master as my test pilot for this
What are you flying? |

NX-687, perhaps you could try adding IR proximity sensors on the wing tips to try and get the plane to align automatically with the ground in the last few centimeters? No control over drifting, though

Brandano , What is the range of an IR sensor It would have to be about 20 feet ? My IR transmitters are about that The model is killed by the wind I guess like all VTOL's Last edited by NX-687; Nov 26, 2008 at 09:33 PM. Reason: Add |

Anyone tried that Futabe PA-1? Senses co2 in the atmosphere or something to sense level, so it can "see" the horizon in 2 axis...
I have no idea what the VTO 44 is, could you give ma a link or picts pls

Hi
The VTO is nothing special just a circle cut in half with flippers on back , (elevons)
and symetrical rudder Engine on front A lot like a pogo |

It's a really big number.

Nice job on the motors, but how are you going to retain the rear prop motor's bell? Usually isn't that where the shaft is clamped to the bell, running down through the coils and out the bearings at the other end?
Just curious as I was thinking of doing something very similar, but couldn't solve that problem. |

Hi
I like the idea of contrarotate , but you could also try a geared single and a very big prop, that would be my preference , Ive had no trouble with torque control, with ailerons , the hover is fine , the only thing that stuffs up the hover is wind , I use a 13x6 prop on a 30 Inch span model, 72 gram outrunner wound to suit the prop 3s 900 Mah battery
Contrarotate does cancel torque but the smaller prop disks cover less control area which is the part I dont like , not to mention the extra weight and complexity of two motors , , but thats VTOL's I guess they can be very complex , if you wish , or actually do it without complex like Eric Dainty did Its a fine looking model compared to my examples , but Im only interested in performance at all costs , I like a bit of water paint splatted on here and there though |

Proximity sensors only work at really short ranges, they rely on reflected IR light. They aren't the most reliable distance sensors, but they are cheap
