Minute Plank-Light lift depron Plank for travel - w/ Video

This is an old need I have for short trips where you never know what type of slope youīll find.
Here in Brazil the winds are weak, and usually we go to the beach during good weather, what means more thermals than big winds.

Dealing with depron is so fast and ease that I call it "minute plank", as Iīve spend ~4 hours to make it.

The idea :
- Depron 2mm sheet
- Wingspan : 1200mm; max cord 300mm; min cord; 150mm
- 3 pieces : fuse, 2 wing halves, max 600mm each
- Total weight : 300grams (not sure the conversion, aprox. 10oz ??)
- Airfoil : ?simetric?
- Functions : aileron + elevator (separate), 3 servos (no mix), so one can use simple radios.

The model is almost "disposable", so no need to worry about details like airfoil, sanding...

The airfoil is the outcome of two sheets sandwich over a main rib.

I only knew the Beetle.
But I really liked the team monkey plank.
..............................

Well, Iīll just drop the pictures sequence, and some comments.

Thereīs a process of doing the wing, in order to make it correctly, and not to warp the wing :
One thing to keep in mind : Do everything simetrically.

Obs. : Iīve used hot gun + tape ONLY.

1. Be sure the 4 wing sheets are identical.
2. Glue the spar rib first - 2 x 4mm depron, over the botton sheet (Iīve choosen 8% thick
3. Glue the trailing edge
4. Glue the spar + top sheet
5. Now the leading edge, this is more complex : In order to make it right, I used small pieces of tape like this :
- glue 2 in, put a tape, 2inches more, and more tape, and so on...

I believe thatīs the best way of doing, glue with your toes, and put the tape. Never press the depron over the table - it will create a non-symetrical airfoil.

More photos :

See the spar rib = 2x 4mm depron.
Eletronics : Everything will be inside the wing but the battery. Thus thereīs only one connection during field assembling, the battery connector.

Really Cool idea ... might be a great way to try different planforms ec before making one from EPP or othe materials. I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.

Itīs the cheapest - so called "9grams servo", blue, from Tower Hobbies.
Thereīs no need for more, total final weight was 280 grams.

More photos.
See the elevator problem of separation : Iīve left the wire in one side, to be taped in the field - using tape. Thatīs all.

Just noticed you live in Sao Paulo! Im right next to you in Peru... Hablas espaņol?
Getting back on topic, What foam is the nose made of..? Looks a bit weird..
The wings look great!'
How much overall weight are you going for?

In Brazil we speak Portuguese (just to clarify), but I do speak Spanish also - and a basic of German...

Itīs depron in the nose. Weight 280grams.

Finalizing: color tape and thatīs all !

The 3 pieces ready for the trip !
It fits any place in a crowded family trip car !

Did kno that, just wondering if you knew spanish too.
I thought you were going for the mixed elevons approach, not separate elevator and ailerons.
When you maiden it, tell us if the elevators are unresponsive ( I see them quite small)

Thatīs the idea, Alex : The project is for simple radios (mine is Skysport 4ch), they donīt have exponential. Planks are very sensible on the elevators, you only need a bit.
If your radio donīt have exponential and you use an external mixer, the problem is that the elevator is so sensible that you have to put a lot of nose weight, making the "plank efficiency" down the drain...

The solution is to make a very small elevator.

After a lot of planks like this (separate elevators), Iīve realized that they need ~20% wingspan lenght, only. Take a look in the pictures.

Itīs flying already, doing all aerobatics, very tight loopings - the elevator is really fine !

I forgot the camera, but the video should come this weekend for sure !

Tragic - another case of plank-itis has struck...

That's a great collection you have there, I particularly like the round nosed models (top left and middle right of your photos) - they remind me of the Darkstar UAV, one I've always fancied making a PSS model of. Nice work!

I've never had a plank, so I didn't know...
But thanks for telling me about the elevator... Im thinking of making a small plank along the lines of your design.
