Swift 16 vs Carbon Swift 550

Well what else is there to say thats not in the heading.
Which is actually a better, more durable heli ?
If you could have either one, which would you choose ?

I have both.

For duarbility - the molded mainframe of the Swift 16 is far more crash resistant then the C/F frame of the 550SE.

For all out precision and durability of the Rotor System for high rotor speeds (2100 plus) for all out extreme 3D - the CNC rotor hub of the 550SE is a big plus.

The push/pull elevator cyclic bellcrank on the 550SE is a plus relative to servo bearing load in hard 3D high g-maneuvers compare to the one in the Swift 16. But if you are not doing extreme 3D, or are using servos with dual bearing supported output shafts, then it is not of any real consequence.

In other words, I would take the Swift 16 with 3 x S-9252 servos then the Swift 550SE with S-3151 servos...of course the best would be the 550SE with the s-9252's.

Ditto for the advantage of the third bearing mainshaft support of the 550SE -handy maybe for long term extreme 3D, otherwise not of real consequence.

Of course if you want to do bakwards and /or pirouetting autos, you will need the 550SE with its' driven tail.

Equipped with the same servos and gyro, the same power system and battery packs, I can do all the things with my Swift 16 as I can with my Swift 550SE except the aerobatic autos, as long as I keep the rotor speeds below 2100 and use shorter blades.

But if I want to use longer blades at the higher head speeds, the CNC hub of the 550SE is a must.

For crash resistance, the Swift 16's frame has a big advantage over the 550SE (or any C/F framed heli I know of)

As for ease of building - the molded Swift 16 mainframe is far easier to assemble.

It really depends on your skill level Ė they are both excellent flyers.

If you are learning get the Swift 16. If you crash a lot you really donít want a carbon helicopter.

If you have lots of money and never crash then the Carbon 550 would be a good choice.

Personally, I just don't like carbon fiber main frames. My second Swift is a 16 with all the aluminum parts added. Cyclick, Doesn't the 3151 have dual ball bearings also ?

Thatís a good point, carbon frames have also been known to cause a lot of glitches on 72 MHz and lockups on Spektrum receivers. I have to upgrade from Spektrum to Futaba FASST (7C-2.4GHz) radio to get rid of receiver lockups and crashes.

The S3151 servos are a good choice. They have one BB and one metal bushing but thatís no big deal. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXFKZ8&P=ML


If you really want dual BB you can just replace the bushing with another BB Ė itís just a drop-in upgrade.

I'm pretty much sold on the Swift 16.

So now I need to find a motor battery combo for learning and casual flying. Hoping to use 4S for now.

Yep, look at the combos. The 550 motor will give you 10 minute flights on 4s keeping it light.

The 600 motor (1200kv) will give about the same, but allow a move to 6s later.

For a first heli, the stock Swift is perfect

On my larger helis I used both... a 2s lipo battery driving a BEC to regulate the voltage down to what is required for the Rx. The theory being that if something happens to the main flight pack, you will still maintain control of the bird because you have power to the servos and receiver.

The first one I used was an Align 6a jobber that is no longer produced... only a 3a version. Although the new T-Rex 600 ESP is supposed to have a 6a BEC so maybe you can get one from them again.

The 2nd one I'm using is one from HC that looks very similar to the Align one but I only have a few flights on it so no real reliability data to report on it. I also have a CC BEC that seems pretty good but I haven't used it as of yet. I can provide links if you can't find them yourself.
